NOTE:  From descendents living in Sandoval, Marion Co., Illinois

Thomas and Elizabeth Deadmond were living in North Carolina where their children were born, then moved to Marion County in 1827 or ’28.  This family was among the first pioneers to settle in the county. They homesteaded 400 acres.  On the homestead four miles from Sandoval is a small cemetery where many Deadmonds and Wilbournes are buried.

The country was called a prairie but with a wilderness of trees.  Winter caught them before they could get settled.  The Deadmonds built a log cabin with three sides only.  They would drag 6 to 8 foot logs with their team to the fourth and open end of the cabin and burn it for heat.

The following summer horn flies were so bad that both man and beast couldn’t work in the open but had to stay in the thick woods as much as possible.
