OKLAHOMA’S CIVIL WAR CENTENNIAL ENDED at Old Fort
Towson, Oklahoma, on June 23, 1965, at Old Fort Towson ruins in southeast
Oklahoma – the state’s last official shot.
There was a tribute to Brigadier General Stand Watie, the Cherokee who
was the last Confederate general officer to surrender, two and one-half months
after Appomattox. He finally
surrendered at Fort Towson June 23, 1863. Stand Watie refused to believe the “rumor” that the war was over.
Stand Watie was born about 1806 near Rome, Ga., son of
Oo-wa-tie, full blood Cherokee, and his mother (half Cherokee was named Degate,
translated as “Standing Together.” The
surname is derived from Oo-wa-tie.
Elias Boudinot, also known as Buck Watie, was Stand’s older brother and
Major Ridgeway, an uncle.
Another Confederate Brigadier General is buried at
Kiowa near McAlester – Edward Lloyd Thomas of Ga. who died in 1898. John Peeler, 1st Vol. Co.,
Cleveland Co., N. Car. Is said to have fired the last shot at Appomattox. John Peeler’s great grandniece is Mrs. Frank
B. Hawkins, Altus, Okla., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Wilcox whom Peeler
visited in Oklahoma.
Fort Towson was first established May 1824, under
command of Matthew Arbuckle, to guard this region on the Spanish Border. It was occupied by troops, Companies D and
I, 7th Infantry, Major Alexander Cummings, 7th Infantry,
Commanding. The mission regarded as completed,
the troops were evacuated June 17, 1829 on orders under Lt. Col. Sullivan
Burbank, 7th Infantry, to Fort Jessup, Louisiana.
In 1830 with the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek,
preparations were made for the removal of the Choctaws to the West. The Government gave orders for a permanent
fort to be built in the Indian Territory at this location. (Fort Towson was re-established as Camp
Phoenix by First Battalion, Third Infantry, Cos. A, C, G, and I), Major Stephen
W. Kearney, 3rd Infantry, Commanding (G.O. No. 66, Nov. 15,
1830). On a morning report in Nov.
1831, Camp Phoenix first appears as Fort Towson. . . .
The Fort Towson Cemetery (also known as old Doaksville)
is maintained by voluntary contributions and local fund raising programs. Here are buried Colonel David Folsom, first
elected Chief under the written Constitution 1826 of the Choctaw Nation; and
Colonel J.H. Nail, buried there 1846 – Their graves marked by
steamboat-carried, solid marble slabs engraved at the bottom of Colonel Folsom’s
marker with “shocker (sic) and Barrett – New Or," Here also is the marker which reads
“Tryphena’s Grave.” Tryphena*, an
educated Choctaw, was a mission school teacher and wife of Charles Stewart, an
easterner and trader.
Doaksville, ¼ mile east of the Fort Towson Cemetery,
was the capital of the Choctaw Nation, 1850-1860. The first Masonic lodge in Oklahoma was established there – to
which many missionaries and soldiers belonged.
(Excerpts from mimeographed report, dated May 3, 1965, from Miss Dorothy
Orton, Chairman, Fort Towson Commemoration Committee, Fort Towson, Oklahoma.)
*There is an interesting account of Tryphena, by
Frances Imon, Okla. News Bureau, in The Paris News, Paris, Texas, Aug.
13, 1964.
In the story is Tryphena’s pedigree, daughter of
Minerva Folsom who married Noah Wall and step-daughter of Eunice (Clough)
Wall. Beside Tryphena’s grave is
another grave. The headstone has no
name but is inscribed Weep not for of Such is the Kingdom of Heaven. This grave, Carrel T. Thomas believes to be
that of Tryphena (Wall) Stewart’s baby.
Mr. Thomas also advances the theory that Tryphena, popularly “called” an
Indian Princess was really a Princess – a descendant of the Great Medaled (sic)
Mingoes. Charles F. Stewart was from
Connecticut and a clerk in the Doaksville store. Whether Mr. Thomas’ theory can be proved by historians to their
satisfaction is for the future to determine.
(The OGS Editor has a copy and obtained permission from the Managing
Editor, Paris News to use and re-publish the story as desired.)
