Vol. 10, No. 1, March 1965

(Text below from the Oklahoma Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 9, No. 2, June 1964)

The Oklahoma Historical Society continues to observe the Civil War Centennial by publishing, beginning with the September, 1964 issue, Vol. 9, No. 3, the "11th Census of the U.S., 1890, Oklahoma and Indian Territories, (the) Schedules Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War. " On this roll also are some veterans who served in the Mexican War and some Confederate Soldiers, (*Microfilm-Microcopies of Records, Bundle 141 in the National Archives: No. 123, Roll 76).

Muriel Teel Cooter (Mrs. M.S.) has transcribed the microfilm in the Oklahoma Historical Society Library as her contribution in the Observance of the Civil War Centennial and has given the right to the Oklahoma Genealogical Society to use the transcription on a continuing basis, reserving the right to issue it as a separate publication. Mrs. Cooter is Chairman of the OGS Genealogical Assistance Committee.

Only the data reflecting the name of the Veteran, the state served, and the Oklahoma residence will be published. However, all information on the microfilm has been copied and can be searched. The material to be published has not yet been indexed. The names will be published in the order of enumeration and as transcribed from difficult film – some of it too dim to read. The confederate soldiers have a line drawn through the names and have "Conf" written by their names. Some have a line drawn through the names and nothing written by their names. They have the name of their Regiment but no State is shown. Example: Newton W. Jennings – Prv. Co. C, Garro Battalion Burnett Brigade 1862-1865. Symbols to be used by OGS are:

·         *Meaning Confederate Soldier with a line thorough his name and the word "Conf" by his name.

·         **Meaning a line through the name and nothing written by the name.

·         Blank " No information given

·         ? " dim or information cannot be read by the transcriber.

OGS expects to complete publication on or before Vol. 10, No. 4, Dec. 1965.

Bundle 141 containing the special schedules for Oklahoma and Indian Territories, including Greer County then in dispute between the State of Texas and the United States is microcopied on this roll. The schedules are arranged numerically by enumeration districts with the exception of the schedules for the following military outposts which appear at the end of the roll:

1.      Camp Wade

2.      Ft. Gibson Military Reservation

3.      Ft. Reno

4.      Ft. Sill

5.      Ft. Supply

6.      Military Post at Oklahoma

This bundle is part of a body of records in the National Archives designated as Record Group No. 15, Records of the Veterans Administration.

The work of enumerators was begun on the first Monday of June 1890 and completed by July 1, 1890. The work of examining, verifying, and classifying the information on the special schedules was carried on from Aug 1, 1890 to June 30, 1891. (From notes by Dr. Berlin B. Chapman, Prof. of Okla. History, Oklahoma State University).

As of July 10, 1890 there were 31 states. Oklahoma was not a state until 1907. On this film will be found veterans and military post personnel from at least 35 states and territories – and we think you will find some traditionally "lost scalped uncles" still with their scalps on in our Oklahoma and Indian Territories – perhaps still on their way west. If you do find them, let Mrs. Cooter know – it will be her best thank you. (Continued Sept. 1964).

(NOTE: For ease of use, this list has been alphabetized.)
