Purcell - Chickasaw Nation - Indian Territory - 1887

 

These notes were submitted by Joyce A. Rex of Purcell Oklahoma

Appearing in the Topeka, Kansas newpaper, Daily Commercial, edition of of April 26, 1887:
"Today at 11:10 o'clock there were ceremonies to drive the silver spike for the AT and Santa Fe Railroad that connects Kansas and Texas across Indian Terrirory."


Six months later, the Purcell Register, in its first edition November 23, 1887, reported the growth of the town of 1,000 from bare prairies. The newspaper was edited by Ed P. Ingle and listed the following advertisers:

W.T. Fagins - Drayman
Farmer & Campbell - Druggist
N. Whittle - Contractor and builder
T.S. Ward - Commercial Hotel
D.F(rank) Harness - Dry goods and general store
G.W. Brown - Lunber and coal
W.H. Blackwell - "Buy and Sell"
Peter Lewis - Tonsorial Artist
H. B(en) McCulloch - Contractor and builder
Hermann Wirth - Barber
J.S. Williams - Carpenter and builder
W.B. Winns - Physician (veneral diseases a specialty)
J.J. Lowe - Boot and shoe maker
William Andrews - Contractor and builder
T.M. Baily - Contractor and builder
