In 1992, a few Coal County residents, lead
by Kathy and Carl Coffee, began meeting for the purpose of sharing genealogical
research. By early 1993, the membership decided that a central location was needed for the compilation of research material. This centralized location would not only benefit the society, but could be made available to the public at large. A building on Ohio Street in Coalgate was donated to the Society to house their library. The membership made monthly donations to pay for the utilities. The library was moved to a rented facility at 19 Main Street. The members made monthly donations to pay the rent. Kathy Coffee served as the first president until she became ill. Doris Breger assumed the leadership as president. By July, 1993, a full slate of officers were elected, a State Charter was obtained and an federal 501 tax exemption application was filed. The Society operated in various places, and in 1995, joined efforts with the Coal County Commissioners to raise $300,000 to build a new public library with adequate space to house a Genealogy Department. The Society has purchased with donated funds 1910 and 1920 census records for Coal, Hughes, Atoka, Pittsburg, Pontotoc and Johnson Counties, have compiled many county records, collected family histories, marriage, probate, Coal County Cemeteries, Application of Intention to Become Citizens (filed in Coal County), Dawes Land records for Coal County, Funeral Home Records, and various other documents for Coal County. The CCG Society's research equipment and materials are housed in the Coal County Public Library, Genealogy Department. The Society provides volunteer assistance for that department. It is also responsible for the purchasing and compilation of all new genealogy related materials. The Genealogy Department is opened Monday - Friday, 1:00 - 4:00 P.M. |
