WESLEY EUGENE ROBINSON, 85, of Oakdale, died Tuesday, 30 March 1999, at Oakdale,
California.
Mr. Robinson was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Oakdale seven years. He
was a member of Calvary Christian Church. He belonged to the Disabled American
Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; seven children; stepdaughter, Dorothy;
brothers, Frank and John ; two sisters and numerous grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren.
A gravside service was conducted on Friday, April 2nd, at Tipton-Pixley
Cemetery, Tipton, California.
NOBLETT, MARY E. 9 December 1909 - 27 March 1999
MARY ESTHER NOBLETT, 89, of Ceres, died Saturday evening, March 27th at her
home.
Mrs. Noblett, whose maiden name was BUTLER, was a native of OKLAHOMA.
She lived in Santa Cruz from 1938-1952 and then moved to Modesto. During
this period she was known as Esther ALBRIGHT.
She is survived by her brothers, Jess and Sam; her daughter Lillian and
Catherine. She is also survived by five grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. She has several nieces and nephews. All loved her dearly
and also loved her great "cookie" baking skills.She was a member of the Church
of the First Born in Denair.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, April 3, 1999 at Lakewood Memorial Chapel,
Hughson, California.
FOSTER, DARRELL J. SR. 10 June 1940 - 31 March 1999
DARRELL J. FOSTER SR., 58, of Ceres, died Wednesday, March 31st, at Modesto,
California.
Mr. Foster was a native of PAULS VALLEY, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Ceres
five years and previously lived in Livingston five years and Turlock 27 years.
He was a Navy veteran.
He is survived by his son, Darrell; parents, Jack and Ala Burleson and two
grandchildren.
Private inurnment services have been held.

EUNYBELL WALMSLEY, 78 of Oakdale, died Thursday, April 1st, 1999 at
Modesto.
Mrs. Walmsley was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Oakdale three years.
She is survived by her husband, Lyle; children, Susan , Harry and Tom ; sisters,
Oneta and Pearl ; and 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Monday, April 5th, at Lakewood Memorial
Park, Hughson, California.

FRANCIS GORDON MORRIS, 80, of Jamestown, died March 29th, 1999 Sonora,
California.
Mr. Morris was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Jamestown 30 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Connie ; stepchildren, Howard and Doris ;
and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial service will be held at noon May 2nd at the Calaveras Mineral
and Gem Club in Angels Camp.
SANDERS, CLYDE R. 27 December 1910 - 3 April 1999
CLYDE RAYMOND SANDERS, longtime Modesto businessman, died Saturday, April
3rd, 1999. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Sanders was born 27 December 1910 in PHILLIPS, OKLAHOMA, and lived
in Modesto for 77 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 675.
He is survived by his wife, Mable ; children, Perry, Clyde, Patricia and
Carolyn; brothers, Hershel and Merrill; and nine grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
A funeral Service was conducted April 8th, 1999, at Lakewood Funeral Home,
with burial at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California.
SAVOIE, IRENE C. 22 March 1923 - 28 March 1999
IRENE C. SAVOIE, 76, of Ceres, died Sunday, March 28, 1999 at Modesto,
California
Mrs. Savoie was a native of CUSHING, OKLAHOMA. She lived in Ceres
39 years.
She is survived by her husband, Warren A; daughter, Linda ; brother, W. D.
Camp ; sister, Norene ; and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

WHITMORE, ALMA 6 January 1905 - 27 March 1999
ALMA WHITMORE, 94, longtime Modesto City Schools teacher who became a Peace
Corps volunteer in her 60s, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, in her Modesto
home.
Mrs. Whitmore was born 6 January 1905 in FAY, OKLAHOMA, and lived
in Modesto for more than 80 years. She was active in the First United Methodist
Church of Modesto.
Alma and Chet Whitmore were married for 62 years before his death in 1997.
Briggsmore Avenue in Modesto is named for the Whitmore and Briggs families.
She is survived by her children, Margaret, Edward and Charles; sister, Elsie;
and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at First United Methodist Church of Modesto.
WINBORN, TREBA L. 2 January 1913 - 10 March 1999
TREBA LOUISE WINBORN, 86, of Modesto, died Wednesday, March 10th.
Mrs. Winborn was a native of EL RENO, OKLAHOMA. She lived in Modesto four
years.
She is survived by her children, Treba and Corinna; stepson, Frank and four
grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several
great-stepgrandchildren.

PAULINE ANNA BELLE "PENNY" MARTIN, 66, of Turlock, died Friday, March 12.
Mrs. Martin was a native of PRYOR, OKLAHOMA. She lived in Turlock
46 years. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
She is survived by her children, Connie, Bobbi A. and Larry D.; brother,
Joe Kennedy ; sisters, Barbara and Wanda and eight grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.

PAULINE WELCH, 69, of Ceres, died Sunday, March 14th, Modesto, California.
Mrs. Welch was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Ceres 10 years. She attended
Valley Christian Center, Modesto.
She is survived by her husband, Claude; children, Sandra, Tracye, and Jeffrey
; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Miss Hasch was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Oakdale for 20 years.

attended Free Will Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene; children, Gloria and Don; brother, Jack;
and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

California.
Mrs. Wilson was a native of McALESTER, OKLAHOMA. She lived in Atwater

Church, Atwater, California.
She is survived by her husband, Vaughn; children, Denise and Curt A.; brother,
Frank Bernhardt; sisters, Margaret , Frieda , and T. J. ; and three

home.
Mr. Ferrell was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Empire 45 years. He was
a Navy veteran, serving from 1953 to 1961. He was in the Army Reserve and
National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Joanne Digby; son, Carlon; stepchildren,

Mr. Wright was a native of HEAVENER, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Copperopolis
28 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by children, Brian, Kevin, and brother, Troy; sisters, Teresa,
Betty Joand Barbara; and three grandchildren.

Hopton was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Stanislaus County 42 years.

Wars Post in Gustine.

BILLY DEAN WEDGE, 63, of WISTER, OKLAHOMA, died Monday, March 1, at
Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Mr. Wedge was a native of HEAVENER, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Oklahoma
two years, Arkansas 15 years and Modesto 27 years. He was a member of the
Methodist church in POTEAU, OKLAHOMA. He served in the Air Force 18 years.
He is survived by his wife, Billie; children, James, Steven and Janice; his
mother, Clara; sisters, Wanda, Nelma and Linda; and five grandchildren.

Ceres Chapter.
She is survived by her husband, Walter; son, Wally; sisters, Jeanne and Eva;
and three grandchildren.

Gail.

Mrs. Philpott was a native of PARK HILL, OKLAHOMA. She had lived in
Tracy since 1944. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church.

ROBERT J. R. CAGLE, 61, of Ceres, died Tuesday, April 20 at Modesto.
Mr. Cagle was a native of PICHER, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Ceres two
years, and previously lived in Modesto 54 years. He was an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Danny, Jeff and Ginger; sisters,
Pat , Shirley, Jean and Donnia; and four grandchildren.

Funeral Chapel, Hughson, with burial following at Lakewood Memorial Park,

LOWE, EVELYN L. 1 May 1933 - 19 April 1999
EVELYN LEE LOWE, 65, of Delhi, died Monday, April 19th, at Turlock,
California.
Mrs. Lowe was a native of Modesto. She had lived in Delhi since 1988 and
previously lived in Arkansas several years, Hughson many years, and Denair
a few years. Although a native Californian, Mrs. Lowe had extensive connections
with members of her husband's family, the Lowe Family, which came from
WASHITA COUNTY, OKLAHOMA, and settled in the great Central Valley
of California.
DAVIS, LESTER R. 13 June 1914 - 2 March 1999
LESTER R. DAVIS, 84, of Albany, Oregon, died March 2nd, 1999 at his home.
Mr. Davis was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Albany three years and previously
in Ceres, Stanislaus County, from 1954 to 1874. He managed a mobile home
park. Also, he taught welding at a community college, and worked as a welder
on Shasta Dam and the Hetch Hetchy water project.
He worked in the Alameda Naval Shipyard during World War II. And he had worked
mines in Death Valley and the Mother Lode for the U. S. Forest Service.
He was a member and elder of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints.
He is survived by his children, Donna Barnard of Albany, Dianne Tanner and
Darlene Warner; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted at the Reorganized Church of Latter Day
Saints in Albany, Oregon.
PARKER, BILLY L. 10 November 1932 -19 March 1999
BILLY LEE PARKER, 66, of Modesto, died Friday, March 19th, 1999.
Mr. Parker was a native of WEBBERS FALLS, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Modesto 50
years. He was a roofing contractor; he owned Modesto Roofing. He was a Navy
veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Elaine Parker; brother, James R. Parker;
and sisters, Mary Rider and Joyce Hogan.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 27th, 1999.

CARL RUSSELL TIPPS, 85, of Modesto, died Sunday, March 21st, 1999, at English
Oaks Convalescent Hospital.
Mr. Tipps was a native of LOCO, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Modesto two years and
previously lived in Riverbank 37 years. He was a boilerman for Carnation
Company. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his step-daughter, Lilly Geib; sisters, Hazel Cornel and
Christine Black; and two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Friday, March 26th, 1999.
COONCE, RAY W. 17 November 1921 - 24 April 1999
RAY WILBUR COONCE, 77, of Modesto, died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at his
home. Mr. Coonce was a native of BRISTOW, OKLAHOMA. He had lived in Modesto
since 1983. He had retired after a 15-year career as a heavy equipment operator
for E. L. Yeager Construction, and was a member of the Operation Engineers
Local in Pasadena.
He is suvived by his children, Wilbert Coonce of Phelan, Lois Pahia, Glenda
Coonce, Randy Coonce and David Vernon of; brothers, Harrell Coonce of Ceres,
Orville Coonce of Modesto and Martin Coonce; sisters, Lenora Dayton, Lorene
McMillen and Florene Busby; and 14 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on April 28th, 1999, at Salas Brothers Funeral
Chapel, and burial was at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa
Nella, California.

EVELYN MAMIE HIMENEZ, 80, of Salida, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at Doctors
Medical Center, Modesto.
Mrs. Himenez was a native of OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA. She had lived in Salida
since 1985. She was an executive housekeeper at Doctors Hospital, San Leandro,
for 14 years.
She is survived by her husband, Frank W. Himenez; children, Edwin Frith and
Danny Himenez; sister, Delores Moses; and four grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.

Longtime Modesto Businessman CLYDE RAYMOND SANDERS, 88, died Saturday, April
3rd, 1999 at Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Sanders was co-owner of Sanders
Brothers Trucking for 45 years. Mr. Sanders was born December 27th, 1910
in PHILLIPS, OKLAHOMA, and lived in Modesto 77 years. He was a member of
Masonic Lodge 675.
He is survived by his wife, Mable Sanders; children, Perry Sanders, Clyde
Sanders Jr., and Patricia Kelch, and Carolyn Mueller; brothers, Hershel
Sanders and Merrill Sanders; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

WHITMORE, ALMA 6 June 1905 - 27 March 1999
Longtime Modesto City Schools teacher ALMA WHITMORE, who became a Peace Corps
volunteer in her 60s, died Saturday, March 27th, 1999, at her Modesto home.
She was 94 years old. Mrs. Whitmore was a Modesto teacher for some 25 years.
More than 24 of those were spent teaching students with physical or mental
disabilities. After retiring in 1970, Mrs. Whitmore and her family moved
to South America for a Peace Corps assignment. There, her husband, Chet,
taught dairy farming and she taught English and home economics. Both in their
60s at the time, the couple spent two years in Venezuela. "They just all
of a sudden came home and said, "We're going to Venezuela for the Peace Corps,'"
said their daughter, Margaret Bland. After leaving the Peace Corps, Mrs.
Whitmore and her husband travelel frequently....from Alaska to China.
She was born January 6, 1905, in FAY, OKLAHOMA, and lived in Modesto for
more than 80 years. She was active in First United Methodist Church. "She
was always nice to everyone," Bland said. "If she wasn't smiling, there was
something wrong." Alma and Chet Whitmore were married for 62 years before
his death in 1997. Briggsmore Avenue is named for the Whitmore and Briggs
families.
She is survived by her children, Margaret Bland and Edward Whitmore and Charles
Whitmore; sister, Elsie Lovejoy; and five grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted on Thursday, April 1st, at the First United
Methodist Church, Modesto, California.

CHARLES FERRELL, 62, of Empire, died Wednesday, March 24th, 1999, at his
home. Mr. Ferrell was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Empire 45 years.
He was a supervising custodian with Modesto City Schools. He was a
graduate of Modesto High School. He was a Navy veteran, serving from
1953 to 1961. He was in the Army Reserve and National Guard.

WILLIAM HENRY BAILEY, 65, of Ceres, died Monday at Doctors Medical Center,

Mr. Bailey was a native of CLAREMORE, OKLAHOMA. He was raised in Ceres
and returned to the Central Valley in 1969. He owned and operated Bailey's
Plastering, Turlock. He was a bull rider on the rodeo circuit; he belonged
to the California Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association. He was a member
of First Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving
from 1952 to 1955.
He is survived by his wife, Murel Bailey; children, Luke Bailey, Billie Oliveira,
Mark Bailey, Mary Bailey, Matthew Bailey, and Patsy Jenkins; brothers, Bobby

Husband and wife LEROY AND ERIA THOMPSON died a day apart at different
convalescent homes in Modesto.
Mrs. Thompson was 90 when she died Thursday, April 14, 1999 at English Oaks
Convalescent Hospital. Mr. Thompson was 91 when he died Friday, April 15,
1999 at Hy-Lond Convalescent Hospital.
ERIA LIDA THOMPSON was born June 3, 1908, in TUTTLE, OKLAHOMA.
She lived in Stanislaus County 55 years. LEROY ALFRED THOMPSON was
born May 29, 1918. He lived in Stanislaus County 30 years. He was an Army
veteran of World War II.
They are survived by Mrs. Thompson's children, Norma Darnell, Edna Whitfield
and Maxine Baker; and 13 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 25
great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Thompson also is survived by her sister,

62 years. He was an electrician for 60 years; he worked mainly for Wismer

UNION ORGANIZER "TINY" TRAMMELL DIES AT 67
TRAMMELL, J. R. 15 October 1931 - 6 May 1999
J. R. "TINY" TRAMMELL, a former Teamsters union organizer and member of the
Stanislaus County Board of Education, died Thursday night, May 6th, 1999,
after a long illness. He was 67. Mr. Trammell served as a business agent
for Teamsters Local 748 for 12 years in the 1960s and early 1970s. The union
now represents nearly 14,000 members in Stanislaus, Merced and San Joaquin
counties who work at 21 food-processing plants in the region. Solonia Jones,
secretary-treasurer of the union, worked with Mr. Trammell during those years
and recalled the concern he had for people. "He was a very pleasant,
compassionate and hard-working man," she said. "He was a big man and you
would have thought he would carry a big stick, but he was a gentle giant."
Jones said Mr. Trammell was the consummate business agent, always putting
workers first. She said he also was involved in the drive to organize
farmworkers, and worked to establish equal employment opportunities for women
and minorities. "He was like an encyclopedia when it came to this union,"
Jones said. "His death is truly a loss to this industry." Mr. Trammell also
was well known for owning a popular downtown lounge, Tiny's Front Page. He
ran the business for nine years. He also was involved in the motion picture
industry for 25 years, operating Tiny Trammell's Studio Rentals. Mr. Trammell
served two terms as president of the county Board of Education. He was a
member of the United Way's Budget and Allocations Committee. He belonged
to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, La Grange. He also belong to E Clampus
Vitus and organized the first Widows Ball in Knights Ferry.
Mr. Trammell was born October 15, 1931, in OKEMAH, OKLAHOMA, and moved to
Modesto in 1942. He served in the Navy for four years and belonged to the
Naval Minewarfare Association.
He is survived by his wife, Antoinette "Toni" Trammell; children, Mike Trammell,
Shelley Trammell, Garry Trammell and Vicki Trammell; brother, Dwight Trammell;
sisters, Betty Blagg and Marge Ewy; and four grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.

MAMIE ETHEL WILSON, 96, of Modesto, died Wednesday, May 5th, 1999, at her

since 1941. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist
Church.
She is survived by her children, Wesley H. Wilson and Betty L. Proctor; and
seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, May 10th, at Ceres
Memorial Park, Ceres, California.
REEVES, LARRY W. 14 June 1946 - 6 May 1999
LARRY WAYNE REEVES, 52, of Ceres, died Thursday, May 6th, 1999 at his home.
Mr. Reeves was a native of MARLOW, OKLAHOMA. He had lived in Ceres since
1996 and previously in Stockton 50 years. He was a 32-year employee of Pilkington
Libbey-Owens-Ford; he worked in automotive trucking.
He is survived by his children, Joel Allen Reeves, Teresa Hall, and Larry
Wayne Reeves Jr.; father, Raymond Ernest Reeves; brothers, Gerald Ray Reeves
and David Kerry Reeves; sisters Paulette Frank, Janis King, and Mary Plaster
and Donna Plaster; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted on Wednesday, May 12th, 1999, at Wallace-Martin
Funeral Home, with burial at Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi, California.
RILEY, WINSTON L. 3 March 1925 - 5 May 1999
WINSTON LEE RILEY, 74, of Waterford, died Wednesday, May 5th, 1999, at Doctors
Medical Center, Modesto, California. Mr. Riley was a native of HOLDENVILLE,
OKLAHOMA. He lived in Waterford 63 years. He was a re-builder for Sharpe
Army Depot, Lathrop, for four years. He was an Army veteran of World War
II; he belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5059, Turlock.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanie Riley; children, Vernon Lee Riley, and
Carolyn Jean Rogers; sisters, Kim Binge and Irma Duty; and five grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted Monday, May 10th, at Oakdale Memorial Chapel,
Oakdale, with burial following at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California.
ORR, LOVEY F. 4 January 1918 - 21 April 1999
LOVEY FRANCES ORR, 81, of Modesto, died April 21st, 1999, at Evergreen
Rehabilitation Care Center.
Mrs. Orr was a native of OKLAHOMA. She lived in Modesto 30 years and previously
lived in Turlock many years. She sold real estate and was in partnership
with her husband in Santa Cruz; in the 1950s and 1960s, she sold real estate
in Merced. She was a 1936 graduate of Livingston High School. She served
on the Ballico Elementary School Board of Trustees. She was a member of
Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern
Star, Livingston.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra D. Orr; a brother, Garland Lingerfelt;
and a sister, DeLois Crawford.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, May 15th, at Delhi Community
Presbyterian Church, Delhi, California.
DANIELS, MONROE 18 May 1932 - 10 May 1999
MONROE "M.D." DANIELS, 66, of Modesto, died Monday, May 10th, 1999, at Memorial
Medical Center. Mr. Daniels was a native of CARBON, OKLAHOMA. He lived in
Modesto 48 years. He was an employee of E.&J. Gallo Winery for 41 years;
he was a supervisor. He was an Army veteran, serving from 1954 to 1955; he
was in heavy weapons infantry.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Daniels; children, Larry Daniels of OKLAHOMA,
Gary Daniels and Connie Beerbower; brothers, Carl Walker and Donald Walker,
and Jerry Walker; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, May 13th, at Lakewood
Memorial Park, Hughson, California.
RICHISON, ROY M. 10 December 1909 - 7 May 1999
ROY MARVIN RICHISON, 89, of Stockton, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Mr. Richison was a native of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Stockton four years and
previously lived in Tracy 50 years. He retired in 1975 after a 28-year career
with Holly Sugar; he was an agricultural laborer and security officer. He
was a member of Tracy Community Church, Tracy.
He is survived by his children, Naomi Kirkendall, Mildred Wright, Robert
Richison, Roy Richison and Shiela Trujillo; two brothers; 10 half-brothers,
and 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted on Wednesday, May 12th, at Hotchkiss Mortuary,
Tracy, followed by burial at Tracy Public Cemetery.
SNODGRASS, JERRY D. 15 August 1947 - 10 May 1999
JERRY DONN SNODGRASS, 51, of Turlock, died Monday, May 10th, 1999 at Dameron
Hospital, Stockton, California. Mr. Snodgrass was a native of OKLAHOMA CITY,
OKLAHOMA. He lived in Turlock a few months and previously had lived in Ceres
since 1995. He was a pastor of the Assembly of God Church for 20 years; his
last church was Northridge Assembly of God Church, Ceres. Also, he was on
the OKLAHOMA CITY police force for 6 1/2 years. And he worked in the pro
shop at St. Stanislaus Golf Course, Modesto. He was an Air Force veteran,
serving from 1965 to 1968.
He is survived by his wife, Shelley Snodgrass; children, Sara Snodgrass and
Joshua Snodgrass; and brothers, George Snodgrass OKLAHOMA and Wayne Snodgrass
of OKLAHOMA.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, May 14th, at Neighborhood Church,
Modesto. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson, California.
STARK, GLENDA G. 22 April 1943 - 6 May 1999
GLENDA GAY STARK, 56, of Jamestown, died Thursday, May 6th, 1999 at her home.
Mrs. Stark was a native of HOLLIS, OKLAHOMA. She lived in Jamestown 16 years.
She was a bartender for 20 years, including many years at Mountain Springs
Country Club.
She is survived by her children, Steven Nelms, Ralenda Nelms and Malissa
Rae; mother, Viola Himes, OKLAHOMA; brothers, Bud Gregory and G. Gregory;
sisters, Brenda Fay Northweather of OKLAHOMA, and Linda Kay Davis of OKLAHOMA;
and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 13th, at Christian Heights
Assembly of God Church, Sonora. Burial will follow at Mountain Shadow Cemetery,
Sonora, California,
CANTRELL, LEROY M. 19 July 1923 - 10 May 1999
LEROY MARION CANTRELL, a teacher and coach at Hilmar High School for 30 years,
died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. He was 75. He retired
from teaching in 1984. Then, in 1989, he moved to Tucson and served as a
missionary for the Southern Baptist Church. He was an active member of the
church for more than 40 years.
He lived in Hilmar more than 30 years, and started his teacher career there
in 1954. "When I say Lee was a coach, he was THE coach. He coached football,
basketball, baseball, golf, everything," said Doug Boehme, a retired teacher
and principal of Hilmar Middle School. "Beyond that, he was my next-door
neighbor and a friend. He was a quietly impressive gentleman. When Lee spoke
everyone listened, and he was very good with kids."
Leroy Marion Cantrell as born July 19, 1923, in BRISTOW, OKLAHOMA. He was
an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Cantrell is survived by his wife, Alice
L. Cantrell, children, Jim Cantrell, Fran Blanton and Bill Cantrell, and
nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15th, at Sparks
Gymnasium on Lander Avenue in Hilmar. The family will hold a private committal
at North Hilmar Cemetery, Friday, May 14th.
DAVIS, LOYAL J. 5 April 1922 - 8 May 1999
LOYAL JAMES DAVIS, 77, of Riverbank, died Saturday, May 8th, 1999, at Memorial
Medical Center, Modesto.
Mr. Davis was a native of HEAVENER, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Riverbank 35 years.
He was a farmer with Henry Lester for 25 years.
He is survived by his children, Jerry Davis, Danny Davis, Donna Gause, Patsy
Nicholson, and Cindy Davis, Don Davis, Roger Davis and Daryl Kasinger, and
Evelyn Harris; step-children, Joe Decker, and Carolyn Miller and Betty Shockley;
brother, Jack Davis; sisters, Gladys Ford, Sybil Kasinger, Shirley Spencer,
Margie Boles and Betty Banks; and 19 grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, May 14th, at Lakewood Funeral
Home, Hughson, with burial following at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson,

EWING, GEORGE 25 January 1925 - 9 May 1999
GEORGE EWING, 74, of Sonora, died Sunday, May 9th, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Ewing was a native of Englewood, Colorado. He lived in Sonora 11 years,
and previously lived in Columbia and BETHANY, OKLAHOMA. He was a San Francisco
firefighter for 25 years. Then he was a fire investigator for Garnet Engineers
for seven years and for Ex Port International, Irvine, for four years. He
was an Air Force veteran, serving in the South Pacific.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ewing; children, Michael Ewing and Gary
Ewing; two sisters; and one grandchild.

RAGSDALE, KENNETH 9 June 1928 - 10 May 1999
KENNETH "BUD" RAGSDALE, 70, of Pahrump, Nevada, died Monday, May 10th, 1999,
in St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Henderson, Nevada. Mr. Ragsdale was a native
of OKLAHOMA. He lived in Pahrump nine years, and previously lived in Ceres,
California 30 years and Merced seven years. He was a carpet installer and
owner of Modesto Carpet and Bud Ragsdale Floor Covering. He helped form the
Caballeros Club, Modesto. He was a member of Keyes Assembly of God Church.
He was an Army and Merchant Marine veteran of World War II. He was a
boxer in the Army and continued as an amateur and professional boxer in the
Merced area.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ragsdale; children, Pam Cayson, Kris
Renshaw, and Lynn Hibdon and Kenny Sprouls; stepson, Barry Parris; brothers,
Wayne Ragsdale and Don Ragsdale and Bill Ragsdale; sister, Elva Wiseman;
and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral was conducted Friday, May 14th, at Trinity Assembly of God Church,
with interment at the Chief Tecopa Cemetery, Pahrump, Nevada.
OWENS, ALFRED L. 1 March 1918 - 12 May 1999
ALFRED LEE OWENS, 81, of Ceres, died Wednesday, May 12th, 1999, at Doctors
Medical Center, Modesto, California Mr. Owens was a native of OILTON, OKLAHOMA.
He lived in Ceres 51 years. He was a carpenter for Stanislaus County for
five years. He was a member of the Ceres Christian Church. He was an Army
veteran, serving in 1945.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Owens; son, Travis Owens; brothers, Frank
Owens of OKLAHOMA, and R. B. Owens of OKLAHOMA; sister, Agnes Brewer of OKLAHOMA,
and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18th, at Lakewood Funeral
Home, Hughson, California, with burial following at Lakewood Memorial Park,
Hughson, California.
SCHABEL, ROBERT A. 29 November 1914 - 12 May 1999
ROBERT ALFORD SCHABEL, 84, of Modesto, died Wednesday, May 12th, 1999 at
Memorial Medical Center, Modesto, California. Mr. Schabel was a native of
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA. He lived in Modesto 41 years. He was a salesman
for House of Carpets for 32 years. He was a member of First United Methodist
Church, Riverbank. He was an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Ferrol Hillidge Schabel; children, Rebecca Neira
and Judith Schabel-Loop; brother, Albert F. Schabel of OKLAHOMA; and three
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 17th, at Lakewood Funeral
Home, Hughson, with burial following at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson,
California.
