Durant Daily
Democrat
Mrs. Emma Carline PARKER MARTIN
will have traveled many miles as well as many years when she celebrates her
100th birthday here tomorrow. Attaining a milestone which she set for herself
many years ago. A native of Ind. she has lived in Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma
and first came to Indian Territory in 1897, long before statehood. Mrs. MARTIN
, along with two other aged neighbors, will be honored with a party at Thrasher
Ladies home, in Durant where she has lived since last August. Honored with
Mrs. MARTIN will be Mrs. Elizabeth DAVIS, who will be 87 yrs old on the same
day, and Mrs. Annie BOND who will be 93 yrs old next Tuesday. Refreshments
will be served to all the guests in the home and honorees will open their
gifts. "We have monthly birthday parties for all our residents who have birthdays
in one month" Mrs. Allie M. THRASHER operator of thrasher's Ladies home,
said. Mrs. MARTIN will also have her three sons, E.V. MARTIN , Roscoe M.
MARTIN both of Durant, and W.S. MARTIN of Idalou, TX. as her very special
guests at the party. "I have always wanted to live to be 100 years old, and
have always felt like I would." The frail but alert Mrs. MARTIN said. "I
have trusted God, and he has given me a long and happy life". Mrs. MARTIN
was born in Elizabethtown Ind. in 1863 the second year of the Civil War.
She was the youngest child of Elias/Elisha PARKER and Jane PARISHO PARKER.Elisha
was from SC and Jane was native to In. but their forbearers came from a Quaker
settlement in Penn. When Emma was 5 yrs old the family moved, by wagon, to
southwest Missouri, where her father had bought, sight unseen, a farm from
a real estate agent, and on arriving they found the farm was on the side
of a mountain and completely untillable. After eking out a bare living in
the Missouri hills, the family moved again, to Texas where they heard fabulous
crops of cotton were being produced on the rich black land, and settled at
Graybill in Collin County, near McKinney. There Emma married a cotton farmer,
George Thomas "Tom" Martin. But they decided in 1897 to move to the Indian
Territory and settled at Oakland in what is now Marshall County. They returned
to Texas five years later, and then came back to Indian Territory, settling
near Albany in what is now Bryan county in 1907, shortly before statehood.
Emma continued to live there after the death of her husband in 1919, operating
their farm with the help of her sons, and then, as they married and made
new homes, worked alone to keep the farm going. She moved into Durant in
1945 and lived with her eldest son E.V. MARTIN . When she required expert
care she moved into the Thrasher home. where she is happy and enjoys the
company of women of near her own age. "Mother is a devout Christian, and
has always lived by the Golden Rule" Her son E.V. said. Mrs. MARTIN became
the mother of six children, but three daughters died several years ago. She
has 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 1 great-great- grandchild,
many of whom will visit her on her birthday or during the week.
"And like Will Rogers she has
never met a person she did not like. She has had her greatest joy in being
with people whether they are longtime acquaintances or strangers. She originally
joined the Methodist church, but now is a member of the Church of
Christ.
P.S. Emma Caroline PARKER MARTIN
died on Nov. 23, 1963 a little over a month before her 101st birthday. Her
last living son, Roscoe M MARTIN (my grandfather) celebrated his 98th birthday
on Nov. 28, 1997 in Durant. And the one g-g-grandchild was my daughter...
