Matilda TAYLOR, daughter of William Isaac TAYLOR and Lily HICKS on 03 June
1924 in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. Harry was the son of Frank WOFFORD,
Sr. and Alice Emma (RUSH) 1)RIDER.
Harry was born on the 24th of
April 1897 in Okay, (now Wagoner County) Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory.
He served as a Private in the 19th Infantry, Company F, during World War
I. Harry was a Democrat. He was enrolled by Dawes Commission, Cherokee Roll
#4744. He received an allotment of Cherokee Indian lands. He did remarry
when he was about 74 years old to Mary MADEWELL, but the marriage did not
last long and he moved into the home of his daughter, my mother, Sandra Madelynne
(WOFFORD) BROWN and her husband, Earnest James BROWN in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
He and Daisy are both buried near his parents in the Three Rivers Cemetery,
outside of Okay, Wagoner County, Oklahoma on 21 February 1978. He died in
Claremore at the hospital there as my mother, Sandra, was employed there
as the Hospital Nursing Director at the time of his illness. For years he
owned his own barber shop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, that was located in several
differing locations and at one time sat near the corner of York Street and
Gibson.
The sister listed as Fran BOWDEN.
This is misinformation as her name was Fannie (WOFFORD) BOWDEN, and occassionally
we called her Aunt Fan. The sister, Carrie MANSKER is actually Harry's 1/2
sister, Carrie (RIDER) MANSKER, as she is the daughter of his mother, Alice
Emma RUSH who first married Stand Watie RIDER. Carrie sometimes went by the
name of WOFFORD in her childhood.
Harry and Daisy had two other
children besides Sandra, a set of twins, sex unknown, who were
stillborn.

KIMBERLIN, MANNING, SMYERS, WILLIAMS
Garvin County: Pauls Valley Demorcrat, Sunday, April 9, 1989
Pauls Valley, Whitebead Lose A
Pioneer
Harvey Deen Williams May 17, 1891
- April 5, 1989 By Joe Claxton, Managing Editor
They arrived in Pauls Valley,
Indian Territory by train from Orrick, Missouri, 1902. Two older brothers
were already here, Arthur and John. Harvey WILLIAMS arrived with his parents
and the rest of the family of 12 children. He was 11. He could not have known
he would spend almost a century on Earth, 86 years of it in The
Valley.
Saturday funeral services ended
part of an era as one of Pauls Valley and Whitebead's oldest pioneers was
laid to rest. Harvey WILLIAMS was 97.
All their possessions were in
a boxcar. Furniture, livestock, a couple of dogs, including Harvey's Bowser.
A pair of ice-skates Harv would amaze local kids with when a pond froze over.
Legend has it that young Harvey made an immediate splash in Pauls Valley
by winning a race down main street with a local who though he had a fast
horse.
John was farming in the area.
He had a home already built in town and waiting for the family. One possession
was not in the boxcar. Leery of the stories of wild Indians and train robbers,
his mother had wrapped $1,000 around her leg under her
stocking.
WILLIAMS and Mary Susan KIMBERLIN
married in 1914. They would have a long life together. She was 84 when she
died in 1981. They raised a family, spending most of their years in the blond
brick house Harvey built on Kimberlin Road in the Whitebead area. Daughter
Mary Deen MANNING and husband Harold still live in the house. Daughter Kathleen
SMYERS and husband Joe are just down the road. With over 36 years of postal
service, WILLIAMS retired Sept. 30, 1960. He started to work in the
post office in 1923 as a temporary carrier. He served as a substitute for
four years. After a year as a clerk he traded that job for the rural carrier
job on Route 1.
He was a farmer, a rancher, a
horseman, a community leader who spent much time on civic affairs from the
Whitebead Cemetery to the Whitebead Methodist Church. Some say that you will
never get old unless you stop dancin'. Harvey must have believed that. Once
or twice a week he attended local dances until well into his
nineties.
A Note from Susie, April 16, 1998
Harvey Deen was my grandfather. The blond brick house he built in 1935 for
$12,000 still stands. My mother, dad, my husband, son and I live in the house
now. I grew up in this house, and after living within a mile from this home
for about 20 years, I am returning. My aunt Kathleen died recently. She was
preceded in death by her husband some years ago. It is strange that I married
a man named Williams. I did check first though where his family
originated. I have strong roots in the Whitebead area, as did my
grandfather. My great granddad Kimberlin was also an early settler in the
area. We continue our family's long-time interest in the Whitebead Cemetery
and Whitebead Methodist Church.
