William Fredrick "Bill" Williams

Former Shawnee resident William Fredrick "Bill" Williams, 89, died Tuesday, May 29.
He was born May 6, 1918, to Fred and Ila Williams in Echo, Ark.

Bill graduated from UCO in 1966.

Bill served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a top turret gunner on a B-17. Bill was stationed in England and flew 34 bombing missions over Germany.

He married Vera Conrey on July 5, 1947.

She preceded him in death in 1995.

He retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1980.

They had three children, Merrill and wife, Jan of Bethany, Terrill and wife, Cathy, Carolyn and husband, Ron Broomfield, both of Oklahoma City.

Survivors include two brothers, John and wife, Juanita of Shawnee, Walker and wife, Maxine of Konawa; seven grandsons, Clinton, Vincent, Justin, Joshua, Jordan, Jeff, Jeremy; two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. today at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.


Betty Janette (BJ) McDonald

Shawnee resident Betty Janette (BJ) McDonald passed peacefully at home 9 a.m. Friday, June 1, at the age of 65 after two years of battling breast cancer.
She was born March 11, 1942, to Edna Lee Buttrill and Raymond Buttrill in Atoka.

BJ lived a full and happy life. Her sweet spirit will be missed.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Shanda McDonald of Shawnee; granddaughters, Garrette and Jenna McDonald of Shawnee; sister, Marie Weehunt of Shawnee; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Margie Buttrill of Oklahoma City; niece and husband, Victoria and Howard Dickman of Chandler; grandnieces; Holly, Brandy, and Christy and their families.

The Family of Ms. McDonald wishes to thank family friend, Bonnie Bell and Liberty Baptist Church for their prayers. Many thanks also go to the beautiful ladies of Loving Care Home Health/Hospice for their encouragement and support.

BJ wished for cremation and a small gathering for relatives and close friends will be held in her remembrance at the family home 395-2277, Sunday June 3, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Larry Joe Beasley, 54, died Thursday, May 31.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at the Prague Cemetery with the Rev. Randall Miller officiating.

Lifelong Seminole County resident J.T. Heard, 84, died Thursday, May 31, at Unity North Hospital, Shawnee.

Paden resident Ruth Jane Nootbaar, 63, died Saturday, June 2, in Paden.

JoAnne Melugin

Danville, Calif. resident JoAnne Melugin departed this life on Wednesday, May 23, in her Danville home.
Service will be 7 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at Peace Lutheran Church in Danville, Calif. She will be buried at Resthaven Cemetary in Shawnee, next to her parents and husband.


Rubye J. Poe

Shawnee resident Rubye J. Poe, 91, died Saturday, June 2, in Shawnee.

She was born Nov. 29, 1915, to John and Florence (Gunn) Hamon in Ripley, Okla.

She married Fred L. Poe on Nov. 29, 1933, and they enjoyed 47 years together before he passed away on Sept. 3, 1981.

Rubye was an avid bowler since 1962, she enjoyed quilting, playing dominos, and most of all her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred L. Poe; son, Freddy Lynn Poe; daughters, Mary Alice Robinson, Bettye Louise McBride, and Clarice Holt; one grandchild, one great-grandchild, five brothers, and three sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Patsy Hybarger and husband, Pat, of Tecumseh; daughter-in-law, Lynda Poe; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

Visitation will be Monday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee.


Mary VanDora Duncan

Longtime Chandler resident Mary VanDora Duncan, 60, departed this life Friday, June 1, in Chandler.
She was born June 30, 1946, to William Aurthor and Mary Alice (Hobbs) Presley in Chandler.

She married William Lee Duncan on Aug. 18, 1989, in Chandler. Mary was a homemaker and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Chandler.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, William Lee Duncan of Sparks; one son, Roy Harrison of Chandler; five daughter and sons-in-law, Judy and Howard Peace of Chandler, Jean and Homer Smothers of Sparks, Jennifer Helms of Chandler, Elisabeth and Joseph Walker of Davenport, Tami and Donnie McDaniel of Vici, Okla.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Curtis and Jean McFarland of McLoud, William and Cheryl Presley of Enid, Leonard and Dora Presley of Lawton; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; other relatives and many friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at the First Assembly of God Church in Chandler with the Rev. Doyle Seeley officiating. Burial will follow at White Dove Cemetery in Sparks.

Tony P. Ellison

Prague resident Tony P. Ellison, 92, departed this life on Friday, June 1, in Prague.

Tony was born Feb. 7, 1915, to Henson Berry and May Pirl (Dunlap) Ellison in Amarillo, Texas.

He married Juanita Lorene (Carpenter) on December 29 1947, in Prague. Tony was a farmer, Vandoveer Oil Company truck driver, and a member of Prague Nazarene Church.

He was preceded in death by his four brothers, Leisha, Ike, Berry, Johnny; two sisters, Phoebe Green, Ethel Ellison; granddaughter, Vicki Leonard.

Survivors include his daughters, Jackie Capps of Chandler, Janice and David Lewis of Ozark, Mo., Mary and Henry Thoma of Prague, Jo Ann and Les Stewart of Prague; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Parks Chapel in Prague with Dan Wing and Kevin Wehrli officiating. Burial will follow at Garden Grove Cemetery in Prague.

Terri Lynn Gibbs

Longtime Shawnee resident Terri Lynn Gibbs, 46, passed away Sunday, June 3, in Shawnee after a hard battle with cancer.
Terri was born on June 20, 1960, in Frederick, Okla., to Kenneth B. and Eloise Nicks. She graduated high school in 1978 in Fort Lupton, Colo.

On June 23, 1980, Terri married Lesley (Lane) Gibbs and they enjoyed many years together before he passed away on March 31, 1995.

She then attended Seminole College, Gordon Cooper Technology Center and Rose State College. She was a member of Adyelotte Baptist Church where she loved her Sunday school class. Terri also enjoyed crafts, interior decorating, chickens, and she loved to reminisce about her trip to New York. Terri was diagnosed with melanoma in February 2006. It was a long hard battle for her and her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include her mother-in-law, Virginia Gibbs; her parents, Eloise Nicks of Henryetta, Texas, and Kenneth Nicks of Frederick, Okla.; children, Jonathan Gibbs and Alison Lesley Gibbs of the home; siblings, Deana Wofford of Henryetta, Texas, and Mark Nicks of Wichita Falls, Texas; dear friends, Mike and Donna Atchley, Jonetta Pope, Kathy and Gale Shropshire; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend a warm thanks to the staff of Heartland Hospice and Rose Manor Nursing Center. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.


Pauline Ruth Trent Hill Crabtree

Pauline (Granny Pud) Ruth Trent Hill Crabtree passed from this life on Friday, May 25, 2007.
She was born Nov. 23, 1925, to Rufus and Winifred Ruest Trent. She graduated from White Rock Schools.

On Sept. 5, 1944, she married George Hill in Atoka. George preceded her in death in 1968. They had five children. In 1973, she married Kenneth Crabtree in Stroud, thus adding one son and two grandsons to the family.

Pauline was employed outside the home in many various positions including working at Tinker Field for many years, but her focus was always on her family and home. She was a wonderful seamstress and cook. She was an avid pie and jelly maker, selling many of her items annually.

Her father; mother; two brothers, Neal Trent and Sam Trent; one sister, Evelyn Wilkerson; two husbands and one stepson, Don Crabtree, preceded Pauline in death.

She is survived by sons, George and Carolyn Hill of Tulsa, Ray and Carol Hill of Kingfisher, and Gary Hill of Springfield, Mo.; two daughters, Cassandra and James Campbell of McLoud and Marsha Parker of Kingfisher; three sisters, Naomi Wall of Oklahoma City, Linda and Wendell King of Ava, Mo., and Twyla and Bob King of Eufaula; two brothers, Fred and Marie Trent of Kingfisher, and James Trent of Moore; two sisters-in-law, Betty Trent of Oklahoma City and Peggy Trent of Kingfisher; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchilren and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Service was held Friday, May 30, at the First Christian Church in Kingfisher with Pastor John Sellers officiating. Burial was in the Kingfisher Cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Service.

Former Shawnee resident Billy Gene Harper Sr., 76, died Saturday, June 2.
Service will be noon Wednesday at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel in Columbia, S.C.


Johnnie Lee Hensley

Shawnee resident Johnnie Lee Hensley died Tuesday, May 22, in Shawnee at the age of 54.
There was no service held.

Juanita M. Beard

Harrah resident Juanita M. Beard died Saturday, June 2, in Midwest City, at the age of 81.
Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Asa Smith Memorial Chapel, Harrah. Burial will follow at Wellston Cemetery under the direction of Smith~Parks Funeral Service, Harrah.


Harry B. Hill Jr.

Harry B. Hill Jr., 59, went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ Monday, June 4. He died of a heart attack at his Oklahoma City home.
Harry was born Feb. 13, 1948, in Shawnee to Harry B. Hill Sr. and Frankie Joe Barbe Hill.

He graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee in 1970 with a bachelor of science degree in administration and finance and began a career in municipal government that spanned 37 years and included positions as director of finance for the City of Shawnee, city manager of Shawnee, city manager of Moore, city manager of Noble and city manager of Kingfisher. Later Harry became partners with Glen Turner in their firm, Turner-Hill & Associates. They worked as planning and administrative services consultants to more than 40 Oklahoma municipalities and were specialists in grant applications and compliance. When Glen retired Harry continued the business. He went on to broaden the business into the area of affordable housing, including tax credits. Harry served on the board of directors of the Shawnee and Moore Chambers of Commerce, and is a former trustee and secretary of the Oklahoma Municipal Retirement Fund, which he also served as secretary-treasurer. Known as "Mr. Bear" to his many friends, Harry and Neva Hash united in marriage in 1983, beginning a partnership that was personal and professional and celebrated life. Together, they consulted numerous political candidates and were involved in public issue campaigns. In 1995 he was appointed by Frank Keating as the Governor's representative on the Executive Council of the Family Preservation and Support Initiative. He served a term on the Ethics and Religious Liberty Committee of the

Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. The officers and members of the Oklahoma Professional Fire Fighters of Oklahoma presented Harry with their Meritorious Service Award in 1999 in recognition of his work on special firefighter projects in more than a dozen cities and towns. In 2002 Harry and Neva were founding members of Grace Community Baptist Church where they have been active since the church was started in south Oklahoma City five years ago.

Harry was preceded in death by his father, Harry B. Hill Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Neva; his mother, Frankie Joe Hill of Shawnee; brother, John of Norman and sister Judy Levisay of Shawnee; two nephews, John Michael and his wife Nikki and their daughter, Trinity of Moore; and Jacob of Norman; one niece, Shelley Levisay of Shawnee; one aunt, Zada Mitchell of Bakersfield, Cali.; numerous cousins, a legion of close friends and a loving church family. Harry will also be missed by his beloved dog, Reagan.

Viewing will be until 11:30 a.m. Friday at Vondel Smith South.

Service will follow at 2 p.m. at First Southern Baptist Church, 6400 South Sooner Road. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee.

Sharon Joan Brinlee

Holdenville resident, Sharon Joan Brinlee, 63, passed away at home on Monday, June 4, after a short battle with cancer.
Sharon Joan Brinlee was born September 23, 1943, in Holdenville to Laverne "Bun" Smith and Marie Carroll Smith.

She was a graduate of Holdenville High School.

On May 31, 1961, Sharon married Curtis Brinlee and the couple made their home in Holdenville.

She was a member of Capitol Heights Missionary Baptist Church and taught the kindergarten Sunday school class for twenty years. Sharon was also the secretary for the Capitol Heights Ladies Auxiliary. She was recently retired with thirty-six years of dedication to Dr.'s Irby and Irby.

Sharon loved to read and collected figurines and ornaments. Her brightest smile came when she spent time with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Peggy Elliott.

Survivors include Sharon's husband, Curtis of the home; son, Kerry Dean and wife, Becky of Seminole; daughter, Angela Gail Enos, and husband, Steve of Holdenville; grandchildren, Katy and Kory Brinlee of Seminole, Brittany and Amber Simpson of Holdenville; sisters Geraldine Smith and husband, Robert of Holdenville, Carolyn May of Shawnee; brothers, Larry Smith and wife, Sandy of Shawnee, Gary Smith and wife, Linda of Eufaula; extended family members mother-in-law, Madge Brinlee of Holdenville; brother-in-laws, Hartsell Brinlee and wife, Joetta of Okemah, Alton Brinlee and wife, Penna of Olive Branch, Miss., Kenneth Brinlee and wife, Collene of Holdenville; sister-in-law, Pat Ray and husband, Ed of Wetumka; and step grandchildren, Mitch and Blake Enos of Holdenville. Sharon leaves numerous other nieces, nephews, other relatives and a community of friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Capitol Heights Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Jim Crawford officiating.

Pallbearers are Bob Irby, Mark Olney, Benny Miller, Charlie Ownbey, Jim Smith, and Chase Phillips. The men of Capitol Heights Missionary Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow at Holdenville Cemetery.

JoAnne Melugin Neavill

Born in Shawnee on Dec. 26, 1928, JoAnne Neavill (nee Melugin), passed away Wednesday, May 23, in her Danville, Calif., home.
She was the daughter of Dr. Roy J. Melugin and Louise Campbell Melugin.

In her youth, JoAnne represented Shawnee at Girls State and was elected Governor of Oklahoma Girls State in 1946.

She married Jack Neavill in Denve rin Feb. 1948. They were together until 1995 when he passed away. Together they raised a loving family of six children.

JoAnne is survived by Janet Louise Hersh, Jonnie Kay Atkinson, James Roy Neavill, Jerry J. Neavill, Jeannie Anne Sousa, and Jill Marie Huckaby; grandchildren Eva and Jesse Hersh, Mollie and Wendy Siegle, April Atkinson, Tony, Joanna, and Joel Sousa, Jackie and Jamie Neavill, and Gianna Huckaby. All will miss their "Jamma" JoAnne's gourmet cooking, vibrant piano-playing...and fun-loving sense of humor.

A popular San Francisco Bay area piano-bar entertainer, JoAnne was renowned for her talent to not only play everyone's favorite songs by ear, but to remember each singer's favorite--even if she hadn't seen him or her in years. Her life growing up in Shawnee and experiences in California as an E.S.L. teacher, pianist, community building volunteer and mother touched hundreds of lives with grace, beauty and the joy of laughter. She will be dearly missed.

JoAnne's Memorial Service will be 7 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at Peace Lutheran Church in Danville, Calif. She will be buried at Resthaven Cemetary in Shawnee, next to her parents and husband.

Derek Wayne Underwood

Life long Seminole resident Derek Wayne Underwood, 20, passed from this life Saturday, June 2, following a motorcycle accident in Shawnee.
He was born January 1, 1987, in Shawnee.

Derek graduated from Seminole Public Schools in 2006 and had worked for Ledco Plumbing for two years and he was currently working at Wolverine Tubing in Shawnee.

Derek was preceded in death by his grandmother, Lucille Underwood.

Derek leaves to cherish his memory, his mother, Joan C. Underwood of Seminole; one brother, Basil Underwood of Seminole; his fiancie, Juanita Porter of Seminole; grandfather, Bill Underwood of Seminole; three uncles and an aunt, Bob and Susan Underwood of Henessey, Gary Underwood of Asher and Brian Underwood of Seminole; cousins, Gage Underwood of Seminole, Sadie Richards of Henessey, Lance and Sara Painter of Henessey, Rusty Richards of Stillwater, Angie Underwood of Henessey and Hugo Underwood of Henessey and a host of other family and dear friends.

Viewing will be 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. today at Swearingen Funeral Home, 100 West Strothers Ave., Seminole.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Seminole Deacon Marchand Fleming will officiate with Ed Bender and Mike Snyder assisting. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery, north of Seminole (Located 8 miles North of Seminole on Hwy. 377).

Casket Bearers will be; Davey Whitley, Austin Laxton, Jarrod Bender, Richie Kelley, Chris Conway, John Beaver and Keith Aldridge. Honorary Bearers will be; Mike Snyder, Jack Tinsley, Neil Abbott and Scotty Ledbetter.

Moore resident Lois Henry, 67, passed away Sunday, June 3, in her home from congestive heart failure.
Lois was born August 9, 1939, to Charlie and Olive Stards.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Vernon.

She is survived by her husband, Lee Henry of the home; two brothers, Ed and Bob; four sisters, Maxine, Irene, Irma, and Freda; three children, John Harrelson, Kelly Robinson, and Benita Lang; 11 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Blue Lakes Baptist Church in Norman with Pastor Jim White officiating. Burial will follow at the Wanette Cemetery under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel in Moore.

Seminole resident Cora Nadine (White) Hodges, 71, died Monday, June 4, at Seminole Medical Center.

Tomi Jean Yates-Fields

Honobia, Okla., resident Tomi Jean Yates-Fields, 80, died Sunday, June 3, in Honobia.
She was born Mar. 31, 1927, in Mountain View, Ark., to Asa and Jaunita (Richardson) Hutson.

Tomi was married in 1948 in Tucumcarie, N.M. to Claude Yates. He preceded her in death Mar. 3, 1984.

She lived in the Tecumseh area until the late 1970s. In 1985 she retired form Oklahoma State Forestry where she worked on a flashman tower. She later married Ace Fields and moved to Clayton, Okla. In 1999 she returned to Honobia where she lived her remaining years.

Tomi was a member of the Talihina Chapter of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ace and Juanita Hudson; sister, Virginia; brother Jimmie and two husbands, Ace Fields and Claude Yates.

Survivors include sons, Ernest and Judy Yates, and Harold and Gina Yates all of Honobia, Okla.; daughter, Ann and Dean Phillips of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; brothers, Charles and Cathy Branson and Richard Branson all of Honobia, Roy and Glenda Branson of Maud; grandchildren, Pam Motley, Shelly Evens, Vickie Eagleston, Darren Phillips, Derek Yates, Chris Krieg, Jennifer Krieg; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Religious service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Little River Valley Christ Church, Honobia with Leroy Williams Officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Tecumseh.

Pallbearers will be Floyd Branson, Darren Phillips, Chris Krieg, Lynn Phillips, Jordan Evens and Robert Butler.

Oklahoma City resident James E. Quinn, 68, died Wednesday, June 6.

Leo Jones

Tecumseh residen Leo Jones, 83, died Tuesday, June 5, in Tecumseh.
He was born July 13, 1923, in Keota, Okla., to Bryant and Nora Alberta (Brigance) Jones.

Leo was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church of Tecumseh.

After 20 years in the Military Air Transport Service, Leo retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the U.S. Navy in 1962. He served during World War II, as well as Korea and Vietnam as a flight engineer. He enjoyed his Navy Career which took him to Europe and Asia.

He was married February 28, 1948, in Ft. Smith, Ark. to Maxine Hall.

Leo attended San Jose State and San Jose City colleges in California completing an associates degree in accounting and real estate. Upon moving back to Oklahoma in 1971 he and his family moved to Tecumseh. Leo was a real estate broker and an appraiser for nearly thirty years in the Shawnee area. He completed an additional associate degree from Seminole Junior College.

Leo enjoyed working in the community and his church. He was president of the Shawnee Board of Realtors, president of the Central Oklahoma National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers, president of the Diamond K Kiwanis, vice president of American Legion Post #260 in Tecumseh, Chair of the Pottawatomie County Democrat Party, president of the India Shrine Club in Shawnee. Leo was a 33rd Degree Mason. For many years he was treasurer of the Home Finance Authority in Shawnee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Bill Jones; and sisters Lola Williams and Gerldine Vermeulen.

He leaves his wife, Maxine of the home; sister, Christine Tate and husband, Wayne, of White House, Tenne., brother, Wayne Jones and wife, Jill, of Norwich, England; brother-in-law, Bud Hall and wife, Geri, of Council Hill, Okla.; sons, Richard of Meeker, Robert and wife, Jerry, of Tecumseh; five grandchildren, Cavan Jones and wife, Erika, Rashael Jones, Lacey Jones, Miles Jones and Sarah Weeks and husband, Jeff; and four great-grandchildren, Raven Jones, Reign Jones, Madison Jones and Blake Weeks.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Broadway United Methodist Church of Tecumseh.

Glenda F. Buck

Our beloved Glenda F. Buck passed away Saturday, June 2, in San Diego, Calif., while visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Martina Buck and Dr. Mario Chojkier.
Glenda spent many years abroad with her late husband, George Buck, and family. She has now come home.

Glenda is survived by her finance' Bob Valderas, her daughter, Dr. Martina Buck and son-in-law, Dr. Mario Chojkier; son, Kevin Buck; and a host of other family and friends.

A Rosary service will be 7 p.m. today at Swearingen Funeral Home in Konawa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Konawa with Father Matthew Brown, O.S.B. officiating.

Pall bearers will be Mario Chojkier, George Winters, Kevin Buck, Bob Valderas, Charles Johnston and Gene Dennie. Honorary bearer will be David Green.

Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. She will be laid to rest at the Sacred Heart Church Cemetery in Konawa next to her father, Elmer Johnston; mother, Lorena Boyd Johnston; sister, Mary Winters; and her brothers, J.E. Johnston and Jack Johnston.


Mary Jean Garner

Shawnee resident Mary Jean Garner, 73, died Wednesday, June 6, in Shawnee
She was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Ponca City to W.N. (Bill) and Mary (Sullivant) Lee.

She attended and graduated from Ponca City High School with the class of 1951. She was the co-recipient of the initial Conoco College Scholarship.

Mrs. Garner attended Monticello College, the University of Colorado, where she was a member of the synchronized swim team, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.A. in languages.

She was married June 22, 1956, in Ponca City to Steven T. Garner. Mr. and Mrs. Garner were married for 50 years and were best friends for 55 years.

After living in Colorado, Texas and Kansas they settled in Shawnee in 1965. It was in Shawnee where they raised their family and established an accounting practice.

Mrs. Garner belonged to the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and was a Unit Leader in Camp Fire and Boy Scouts. She served on the Camp Fire Board for several years. Mrs. Garner was a member of the First Presbysterian Church.

She loved her bridge club and many faithful friends. Traveling was enjoyed by Mrs. Garner. She had many enjoyable lake outings with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Lee Garner and Woody Garner of Shawnee; one daughter, Melanie and her husband, Jeff Defehr, of Weatherford; one brother, Frank Lee of Oklahoma City; one niece, Kara Lee of Oklahoma City; five grandchildren, William and Jeanie Garner, San Diego, Calif., Will, Ross, and Zoie DeFehr of Weatherford.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. at Walker Funeral Service Chapel with Jody Defehr officiating.

Veda Mae Wall

Former Shawnee resident Veda Mae Wall, our beloved mother,went to be with her Heavenly Father Thursday, June 7.
She was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Shawnee to Floyd and Rosa Jackson.

Shortly after high school graduation she married Sturgeon "S.T." Wall. He preceded her in death in 1983.

Veda had a variety of interesting jobs. Always with flair, she taught modeling with Pat Shockley in Shawnee. She then worked for Ruth Meyers, Balliet's and Rothschild's. She also taught "White Gloves and Party Manners for Children" and served as Chairperson for Our Little Miss and La Petite from the late 1960s until about 1975.

Veda attended service at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two children, D'Lisa Reynard of Nashville, Tenn., and Dennis Wall and his wife, Sharon, of Chesterfield, Mo.; two grandchildren, Corbin and Allyson Wall; special care giver, Sarah Shassetz; and a host of other family and friends.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Guardian Funeral Home North Chapel with burial following at 1 p.m. at Resthaven Cemetery in Shawnee.

He was born August 30, 1936, in Oklahoma City to William and Ada (Hoselton) Postman.

He was married June 8, 1974, to Janice Blish.

Mr. Postman lived in Oklahoma most of his life. He taught for many years in pubic schools and Vo-tech. He retired from Vo-tech in Columbia, Miss.

Mr. Postman served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1957.

Inez M. Proffitt

Tecumseh resident Inez M. Proffitt, 85, died Thursday, June 7, in Shawnee.
She was born Feb. 10, 1922, to Odes and Nina (Emberton) Turner in Gamaliel, Ky.

At age 10 her mother died. She had a 5 year old sister and grew up quicker than most girls.

On April 16, 1938, she married H. E. Proffitt in Tompkinsville, Ky. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1993.

She and her husband moved to Illinois in 1955 where he had his own welding business. Upon retirement in 1987, they moved to Tecumseh and have lived here since. He preceded her in death on March 13, 1993.

She did book work for her husband's welding shop, along with being a homemaker, and a church clerk for several years.

After Inez and her husband were saved, they took a big part in church and continued until they were no longer able to do so. She had been a member of New Hope Baptist Church since 1989.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; step-mother, Eva Turner and sister, Ruth Madson.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Anson Proffitt of the home, Aaron and Patti Proffitt; brother, Bethel turner of Novinger, Mo.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Shawn and Tessa Proffitt of Okla. City and Shanna and Jake Sears of Okla. City; two great-grandchildren, Asah Proffitt and Avery Proffitt; and many friends and family.

Service will be 3 p.m. today at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Glendon Sanders officiating. Burial will be at New Hope Cemetery.

Donald William "Duck" Marland

Shawnee resident Donald William "Duck" Marland, 69, passed away Thursday, June 7, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 13, 1938, to Vernon Marland and Carrie Mack Stubbs, in Shawnee

He graduated from Pawnee Indian School, Chilocco High School and Haskell Indian Junior College. He worked as a machinist and a painter.

He Served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.

He was a Tribal Member of the Sac and Fox Nation, Lifelong Traditional Practitioner, Fox Clan Leader, Foremost Authority on Southern Sauk Music, Champion Native American Dancer in all styles, artist, educator, athlete, and Expert Head-dress Craftsman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and uncle, Edward Mack.

Survivors include two daughters, Dawn Marland and LaDonna Marland; eight grandchildren; two aunts, Carol Patterson and Linda Slick; two brothers, H.D. Wood and Martin Patterson; four sisters, Patricia Ward, Muriel Wheeler, Jessica Patterson, and Valarie Patterson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted relatives, and many other family and friends.

Traditional Tribal Rites will be held Saturday evening at the Carol Patterson residence. Burial will be 10 a.m. Sunday at the Old Dance Ground Cemetery.


Jon Wisdom

Jones resident Jon Wisdom, 42, passed away Tuesday, June 5, in Chattanooga, Tenn.
He was born Sept. 25, 1964, to Ted and Vivian (Scism) Wisdom, in Shawnee.

He grew up in Tecumseh. He has also lived in Ohio, Florida, Norman, Saudi Arabia, England, Virginia, Colorado and Texas before settling back in Oklahoma.

He married Tammy Switzer June, 2001. She preceded him in death Oct. 26, 2006.

He sold insurance for Mutual of Omaha, as well as being in car sales for Overall ford in Jones. Along with his wife, they owned "Rockin' T Painting & Odd Jobs" doing residential and commercial painting.

He enjoyed football, reading, his pets and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother-in-law, John Symanowski.

Survivors include his parents, Ted and Vivian Wisdom of Okla. City; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lisa Wisdom Beatley and Lori and Kenny Ray all of Jones; three nieces; Loren Ray, Lacy Beatley and Summer Ray; grandmother, Imogene Wisdom of Tecumseh; numerous friends and family.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Wade officiating.

Prague resident Darrell Allen Dukes, 71, departed this life Friday, June 8, in Prague.
He was born July 1, 1935, to Arthur Dewey and Alta Belle (Little) Dukes in Paden.

He was a graduate of Paden High School. He married Maxine Ellison on Dec. 23, 1955, in Paden. Darrel was long-time employee of the Prague Public Schools. He worked tirelessly as a volunteer with the City of Prague in various capacities including ambulance service, fire department, and civil defense. He was a retired Prague Fire Chief Defense Director. Darrell was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

Billy Guy Loftis 

Shawnee resident Billy Guy Loftis, 59, passed away Wednesday, June 6, at home on.

He was born July 21, 1947, in Shawnee to Guy T. and Norman Jean (O'Bright) Loftis.

Billy was a 1965 graduate of Shawnee High School. He served with the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He retired from Tinker Air Force Base. Billy's hobbies included enjoying the outdoors and making knives.

Billy was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents, and aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his son, Steven Loftis of Shawnee; daughters, Virginia Ann Musselwhite of Mounteverde, Fla., and Carrie Renee Mulcahy of Rochester, Mich.; nine grandchildren; his father and step-mother, Guy and Jean Loftis; brothers and sister-in-law, Darrell and Fonda Loftis and Ronnie Loftis of Shawnee; sisters and brothers-in-law Rocky and Wynona Richardson and DeAnn and Rick Fogle of Shawnee; aunts, Joy Farley of Oklahoma City, Edna Loftis and Mildred Uhl both of Shawnee; nieces, Paula Lyon and Lori Loftis both of Shawnee; nephew Dustin Loftis, of Oklahoma City; great-nieces and a great-nephew; and numerous cousins.

A memorial service celebrating Billy's life will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Memorial Park.

He was born Sept. 19, 2005, in Shawnee to Charles Ray Sr. and Tiffany Freeman.

His family is associated with Trinity Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Charles W. Freeman Sr.; great-grandmother, Judy Lane; and great-great-grandmother, Gracie Sanders.

Shawnee resident James Edgar "ED" Clouse, 83, died Wednesday, June 6, at Golden Rule Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Garber, Okla., to James "Jack" Haskall Clouse and Theo Rebecca Reno.

Ed was married Aug. 1, 1943, to Oniece Clouse.

He served in the U.S. Army and was part of the D-Day invasion on Normandy beach. He enjoyed being a caretaker of his family and friends, wood working, and building.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Oniece Clouse; four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his children, Sandy Sadler of Garden Grove, Calif., and Jim Clouse of Shawnee; grandchildren, Michael Crider, Brian Crider, Christina Clouse, and Analicia Ticer; great-grandchildren, Mason Crider, Gracie Ticer and Hallie Yim-Crider; and many other family members.

June Pauline Thompson

Longtime Shawnee resident June Pauline Thompson, 62, passed from this life Sunday, June 10, at Unity North Hospital in Shawnee.
She was born March 1, 1945, in Aderdeen, Wash., to Lyle and Irene Blaine.

June moved to the Shawnee area 43 years ago from Redding, Calif. She was affiliated with the Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee and had worked as a caregiver, nanny and housekeeper for many years.

June is preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Teresa Marie Rowton who died on May 31, 2004 and by one great granddaughter, Bailey Breanne Harlin on November 21, 2000.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Teddie and Thomas Gamel of Garland, Texas, and Lynn and Bill Goodnight of Shawnee; three sons and a their spouses, Frank Aaron Mills of Shawnee, Randy Mills and Kathy Boyd of Shawnee and Paul Mills and Alanna Couch of Shawnee; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Linda and Edward Parks of Woodland, Wash., and Jaxine Kennedy of Woodland, Wash.; three brothers, Walter Blaine of Vancover, Wash., Bern Blaine of Woodland, Wash., and Richard Blaine of Longview, Wash.; also surviving are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of June's life is scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee with Dr. Marvin Hudson officiating.

The family has requested that memorial donations be made to Wesley United Methodist Church - 302 East Independence - Shawnee, Oklahoma

Shawnee resident William Joseph Birney died Monday, June 11, at his residence at the age of 81.
Rosary service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Walker Funeral Service. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Benedict Caatholic Church with Father Joachim Spexarth officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Maranell Adams

Meeker resident Maranell Adams departed this life on Sunday, June 10, 2007, in Shawnee at the age of 76.
She was born on January 8, 1931, in Meeker to Noble William and Nellie Lee (Harris) Smith.

She married Ford Hiawatha Adams on December 10, 1946, in Kansas.

Maranell retired from Tinker Air Force Base where she worked as a civilian tool and parts attendant. She was a member of the Meeker Missionary Baptist Church.

Her parents; one sister, Jo Lamb; two brothers, Paul Smith and Ronnie Smith; and one grandson, Vance Jarvis, preceded Maranell in death.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Ford Adams of the home; son, David Adams of Meeker; daughters and son-in-law, Judy Weidenmaier of Moore, Debi Jarvis of Meeker, Tracie and Ross Harrison of Choctaw; grandchildren, Robin, Adam, Aaron, Mike, Jessie, and Noble; great-grandchild, Christian.

Viewing and visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Parks Brothers Funeral Chapel in Meeker.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at New Hope Cemetery in Meeker with the Rev. Monty Lamb officiating. Services are under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Service in Meeker.

Loretta Goodman Henley

Longtime resident Loretta Goodman Henley, 91, passed from this life Sunday, June 10, at Unity North Hospital in Shawnee.
She was born July 20, 1915, to Clarence and Mary Ethel (Maynard) Goodman in Massey, Okla.

Loretta married Clinton Henley on April 8, 1939, in Wewoka, he preceded her in death March 17, 1990.

Loretta was a member of the Park and Seminole Church of Christ in Seminole where she worshiped for 68 years. She was a member of the Highland Church of Christ in Tecumseh from 1997 to the present.

Loretta worked as a LPN in Seminole for 34 years. She attended nursing school at St. John's Hospital in Tulsa and completed her training at Seminole Junior College. She worked at the Pace - Chambers Clinic and later at the Seminole Hospital Clinic for Doctors Claude Chambers, Julian Wood, Jack Wood and George Davis until she retired in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one daughter, Rebecca Jane Henley who died in 1945.

Survivors include her one daughter and son-in-law, Cherie and Bob Trousdale of Tecumseh; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Trellys Henley of Santa Rosa, Calif., David Henley of Tecumseh, Joe and Deidra Henley of Oklahoma City; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Margie Goodman of Prue, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and dear friends.

Billy Kinsey

Shawnee resident Billy Kinsey died Saturday, June 9, at a local hospital at the age of 79.
He was born March 24, 1928, in Sallisaw, Okla., to Bob Kinsey and Dessie (Miller)Kinsey.

He graduated from Central High in Sallisaw, Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa, Northeastern University in Tahlequah and earned his masters degree from the University of Arkansas.

Billy was a retired Elementary Principle at Wilson Grade School, was Superintendent of Central High School in Sallisaw, and was pastor of Baptist churches for more than 30 years.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one grandson, Jon D. Kinsey; one sister, Robbie Childers; five brothers, Boyce Kinsey, Donald Kinsey, Hoyt Kinsey, Bud Kinsey and Kenneth Kinsey.

Survivors include his wife, Nelda Fern Kinsey of the home; two sons, Bill Kinsey Jr. of Oklahoma City and James Kinsey and wife, Barbara, of Edmond; five grandchildren, Blair Kinsey of Oklahoma City, David Kinsey and wife, Heather, of Vanburren, Ark., Danny Kinsey of Oklahoma City, Keli Kinsey of McLoud and Kacey Kinsey of Minco; two great-grandchildren, Molly Kinsey and Bali Kinsey; nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at New Beginnings Church with the Rev. Larry Sparks officiating. Burial will be in Sallisaw City Cemetery, Sallisaw, Okla.


Debra Lynn (Owens) Bambrough

Shawnee resident Debra Lynn (Owens) Bambrough, 45, passed away Wednesday, June 6, in Shawnee.
She was born Dec. 3, 1961, to William and Octavia Owens in Phoenix, Ariz..

She attended Washington Union High School in Fresno, Calif.

Debbie lived most of her life in the Fresno area and lived in Oklahoma for the last year of her life. She was a member of the Church of the Firstborn. She loved her family and children, animals, camping, and the outdoors.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Andrew Richmond, Ida Richmond, Nathan Owens, Stella Owens; uncle, Luther B. Owens.

Survivors include her children, Kenneth Beard, Adam Beard, Cody Bambrough; father, William Kenneth Owens Sr.; mother, Octavia Ruth Owens; sisters, April Linn, Judy Baldwin, Betty Fujinami, Gladys Martinez; brothers, Michael Owens, David Owens, Billy Owens Jr., Mark Owens, Gregory Owens; and alot of aunts, uncles, and cousins from California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Montana and Missouri.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Home with Bob Toland officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.


Vicki Lynn Walker-Cano

McLoud resident Vicki Lynn "Doll" Walker-Cano died Monday, June 11, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 53.

William Joseph Birney

Shawnee resident William Joseph Birney, 81, died Monday, June 11, at his residence.
He was born June 21, 1925, in Greenville, Mich., to Edward Charles Birney and Mary Loretta (Miner).

He earned his B.B.A. from the University of Detroit, Michigan.

On Aug. 22, 1953, he married Jan Eileen Zeyen in Fostoria, Ohio.

Mr. Birney worked as Clinic Administrator at Shawnee Medical Center Clinic. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was recalled in 1949 to 1954. He was a member of MGMA (Medical Group Management Association), Oblate of St. Gregory's Abbey, St. Benedict Catholic Church.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who is loved and will be missed by all.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Katherine Loretta Baron and Margaret Mary Herda; four brothers, the Rev. Leo Edward Birney, S.J., and the Rev. Harry Timothy Birney, S.J., missionary to Jaipur Ragasthan, India from 1950 to 1959, the Rev. James David Birney, S.J., and John Adelbert Birney,

Survivors include his wife, Jane Birney of the home; seven sons, William Richard Birney and wife, Renea, of Tecumseh, Timothy Charles Birney of Shawnee, Michael James Birney and wife, Michele, of Norman, Patrick Thomas Birney and wife, Debra, of Shawnee, Daniel Leo Birney and wife, Teresa, of Tecumseh, Mark Kevin Birney of Shawnee, and Matthew Scott Birney of Shawnee; two daughters, Eileen Mary Birney of Jones, and Kathleen Marie Reed and husband, Bryan, of Imperial, Mo.; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Kathryn Mitchell

Shawnee resident since 1963 Kathryn Mitchell, 86, died Monday June 11, in Edmond.
She was born March 10, 1921, in Slaton, Texas, to Alfred and Vallie Whitehead .

She graduated from Slaton High School in 1938 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Tech University in 1946. After college she taught English in a Spanish speaking school in Sonora, Texas.

In 1950, while working in Lubbock, Texas, she met and married Joseph Mitchell. They were married 43 years until his death in 1993.

An accomplished artist and an avid reader, Kathryn was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Virginia Griffin; and a grandson, Jared Maupin.

She is survived by sons, Fred Mitchell and wife, Kristen, of San Diego, Calif., and Robert Mitchell and, wife Rachel, of Edmond; grandchildren, Lynn Mitchell-Parrish and husband, John Michael, James Mitchell and wife, Andrea, Nicolette Bailey and husband, Brendan, John Paul, Katie, Lauren and Stephanie Mitchell; great grandchildren, Angel, Alexander, and Justin Mitchell and Ryan Bailey, and many other close family members.

Her sharp wit and warmhearted sense of humor will be greatly missed by all.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Slaton, Texas, at Englewood Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Englund Funeral Service in Slaton.

Lillie Mae (Batt) Rafalko

Shawnee resident Lillie Mae (Batt) Rafalko, 70, passed away Sunday, June 10, in Oklahoma City.
She was born March 2, 1937, in Decatur, Texas, to Grover Cleveland and Nadine (Williams) Cazzell.

She attended Jackson Junior High School.

She was reared in Oklahoma City. Following marriage, she moved to Shawnee, where she has resided since.

She worked as a custodian for Shawnee Public Schools and had also managed hotels.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Walter Lee Batt and Grover Amus Batt.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Rena Batt of Tecumseh and Bill and Mary Batt of Shawnee; six grandchildren, Lydia Mitchell, Gary Lee Batt, Michelle Batt, Jennifer Batt, Maria Batt and Bill Batt, Jr.; nine great-grandchildren, Brittany Batt, Billy Batt III, Gary Batt, Justin Batt, Ronny Harvey, Brooklyn Rose, Christy Adams, Nichole Batt, and Eddie Adams Jr.; sisters, Faye Duke and Nora Coleman

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Ticer officiating. Burial will follow at Blackburn Cemetery.

Wesley Scott Davis

Longtime Meeker resident Wesley Scott Davis, 24, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 8.
He was born Feb. 1, 1983, in Oklahoma City.

Wesley enjoyed noodling, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his nephew, Nicholas.

He graduated from Prague High School in 2001 and was employed by PLH Enterprises of Meeker as a stone mason.

He was preceded in death by his grandpa, Kenneth Wayne Gatlin.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Dana and Gerald Hacker of Paden; father, Scott Davis of Meeker; sister and brother-in-law, LaCehelle and Junior Ellis of Oklahoma City; nephew, Nicholas Ellis of Oklahoma City; grandparents, Ruby Gatlin of Meeker and Lil Brown of Spencer; numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, and many friends.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Living Waters Tabernacle in Meeker with Sister Donna Morton officiating.

Robert Leetka Sr.

Seminole residen Robert Leetka Sr., 84, died Wednesday June, 13, at a Seminole nursing home.
He was born April 9, 1923, in Holdenville to Porter Leitka and Jowina (Tiger) Reed.

Robert attended Sasakwa Schools. He worked for Tommie Cello Pac as a truck driver. He enjoyed walking and playing softball and spending time with his family. Robert was a member of New Tulsa Ceremonial Grounds.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Eame Theatre Ribbon and Four Bronze Service Stars. He had served in Normandy, Northern France, and Central Europe with the 848 Bombardment Squadron. He served with the Army tanks destroyer and was a marksman. He also was trained as a mechanic on airplanes and engines

Robert was married March 23, 1946, in Seminole to Nelsey Palmer. She preceeded him in death April 22, 2006.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.

Survivors include his son, Robert L. Leetka Jr.; daughters, Sherry Littlecreek, and Cora Smith; sister, Anna Fixico; seven grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the White Family Cemetery with Marvin Keesee and Chaplin Donnie Knight officiating.

Honorary Pallbearers will be grandchildren, Tracey, Robert, Christopher, Melissa, Tony, Steve, and Willie. Pallbearers will be from the Absentee Shawnee Veterans Association.

Tulsa resident Marjorie Lucille Richardson, 91, died Monday, June 11.
Graveside service was Thursday, June 14, 2007 at Ethel Reese Cemetery, Barnsdall, OK.
