Sharon Kay Book

Seminole resident Sharon Kay (Cloud) Book, 52, passed from this life Friday, Sept. 15, in Seminole.

She was born Aug. 24, 1954, in Elk City to Ruby P. (Dees) Cloud and Henry LeRoy Cloud.

Sharon graduated from high school in Clarksville, Ark., in 1972. She then married Billy Book on Feb. 2, 1973, in Oklahoma City.

Together, they moved to Seminole where she was a homemaker. Later, along with her husband, she started a PC-Extreme computer store in Seminole.

Sharon and her husband always enjoyed coaching anything her children or grandchildren were involved in from baseball to soccer, and they usually had a winning team.

Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Willard Smith, Johnny Cloud, Larry Cloud; two sisters, Tammy Cloud and Mary Ellen Cloud.

Sharon is survived by her husband of 33 years, Billy Book, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Charley and Yvonne Book and Leroy Book; one daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Clint Cain, all of Seminole.

Also surviving are three brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Pauletta Cloud, Jimmy and Cheryl Cloud, Robert and Karen Cloud, all of Elk City; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Joy and Lloyd Carter of Oregon, Nadine Moore, Leona and James Bohannon, all of Elk City, Lucy and Kenneth Clark of Oklahoma City, Mattie and Alvin Jose of Leedy, Okla., and Diana and Ronnie Lansley of Elk City.

Three grandchildren also survive her and were the light of her life. They are Jimmy Book, Caiden Cain and Zachery Book, all of Seminole.

Viewing will be today from noon until 8 p.m., and 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, Seminole, with the Rev. Steve Cline officiating.

Burial will follow at Little Cemetery, north of Seminole.


Mary Gibson

Van Buren, Ark., resident Mary Gibson, 70, died Saturday, Sept. 16, in a local hospital.
Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel, Van Buren.

Burial will be at Gracelawn Cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home.

Harry H. Diamond Jr.

Tulsa resident Harry H. Diamond Jr., 84, died Saturday, Sept. 16, at his home at Montereau in Warren Woods in Tulsa.
Bud Diamond, son of Harry and Dorothy (Fogle) Diamond, was born in Holdenville and lived there until moving to Shawnee in 1996.

He attended Holdenville schools and Culver Military Academy. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a business degree. At OU, Mr. Diamond was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Diamond's enthusiam for OU was demonstrated through his support for the OU Associates and the University of Oklahoma Sooner Club.

In 1942, he married Betty Lou Malloy, his beloved wife of 64 years.

During World War II, Diamond served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 961st Field Artillery Battalion. He maintained a continuous membership in the American Legion for over 60 years.

During his life in Holdenville, he was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, serving as both Jr. and Sr. Warden. His career in the oil and gas industry included serving as president of Harry H. Diamond, Inc., and having memberships with the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Assn. and the American Association of Professional Landmen.

He also was a charter member of the Holdenville Elks Lodge, member and director of the Holdenville Chamber of Commerce, director of People's State Bank and he was active in the American Red Cross.

Diamond's numerous friends and family knew him best for his soft heart and wicked sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Marge, and her husband, John Gaberino; sons, Jeff Diamond and wife, Nancy, and David Diamond, all of Tulsa.

His adoring grandchildren are Christina and husband, Paul Van Houten, of Boston, Mass., Megan and husband, Ed Grefenstette of Pittsburgh, Pa., Courtney and husband, Doug Mertens, of Fulton, Mo., John Gaberino III and wife, Margarita, of Tulsa, Katie and husband, Matt Mendoza, of Austin, Texas, Jeffrey Diamond and wife, Carol, of Shawnee, Jay Diamond of Oklahoma City, Jason Moore Diamond of Salt Lake City, Utah. His eleven great-grandchildren will miss his love and humor.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 120 East 8th Street in Holdenville under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home.

Prague resident Roy Oliver Richardson, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 17, in Norman.

Edward Lasenberry

Shawnee resident Edward "Wayne" Lasenberry, 59, died Monday, Sept. 18, at his home after a short battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 13, 1946, in Chickasha to Virgil Edward and Margie (Shoffitt) Lasenberry.

Edward graduated from Macomb High School in 1964.

He was married to Belva Jane Christian, who passed away July 1975. He then married Donna Sue Cole on Oct. 8, 1976.

Edward was an iron worker for 10 years. He retired from General Motors after 24 years of service and was a member of the UAW.

He also was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, India Shriner, Tecumseh Blue Lodge. Edward also was a 32nd degree Mason.

He enjoyed fishing, family and traveling.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Margaret Harmon.

Survivors include wife, Donna Sue Lasenberry, of the home; four children and their spouses, Tammy and Bob Flatt, Robert and Tricia Lasenberry, Deanna and John Riechard and Danna and Dennis Sears; grandchildren, Brandon and Courtney Sears, Kaleigh and Chase Jones, Dillon and Delacey Riechard, Cody Lasenberry, Lara and Trevor Lott, Matt and Shanta Riechard, Kasie and Kyle Flatt; two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Reichard and Rylie Lott.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Baptist Church with Bill Matthews and Phil Thompson officiating.

Burial will follow at Blackburn Chapel Cemetery.

Laveta June McCraw

Shawnee resident Laveta June McCraw, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 17, at a local hospital.
She was born Nov. 25, 1927, at Sacred Heart, Okla., to Frank I. Wano and Della Mae (Williams).

Laveta married Jack McCraw Sept. 22, 1946.

She was a housewife/homemaker and a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, American Legion, Alter Society at St. Benedict and the Citizen Potawatomi Tribe.

She also worked civil service during World War II.

Laveta enjoyed music, ceramics, painting and gardening.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters, Ruth Wano, Virginia Tuck and the Rev. Clara Bridges; one brother, the Rev. Franklin Wano.

Survivors include husband, Jack McCraw; two children, Robert McCraw and wife, Jamie, and Luanna "Lu" McCraw; three sisters, Geri Buck and husband, Marvin, Shirley Stafford and husband, Ed, and Susan Dunn; two brothers, Max Wano and wife, Tosh, and Bill Wano and wife, Darline; numerous nieces, nephews and others family and friends.

Rosary will be 9:30 a.m. today at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Mass will follow at 10 a.m. with Father Maurus Jaeb, O.S.B., officiating.

Burial will be 1 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Cemetery with Father Mathew Brown officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Service, Shawnee.


Allie Rae Montgomery

Shawnee resident Allie Rae Montgomery, 90, died Saturday, Sept. 16, at her home.
She was born July 4, 1916, south of Tecumseh to Herman George and Cora Ethel (Elliott) Martin.

Allie married Neal Montgomery on Nov. 4, 1936.

She was a member of the Jehovah's Witness and was baptized in 1957.

She spent her life making a happy home for her family.

Preceding Allie in death were her parents, husband, four brothers, two sisters, a grandson, a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and son, Joe.

Survivors include four daughters, Virginia Jarvis, Zella Jarvis, both of Shawnee, Nealene Montgomery of Oklahoma City and LaQuata Montgomery of the home; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Raleigh Martin of Buna, Texas; and a number of extended family and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Walker Funeral Service Chapel, Shawnee, with Doug McLin officiating.

Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.

Janice Rush

Tecumseh resident Janice (Dodgion) Rush, 50, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Lexington, Okla.
She was born March 9, 1956, in Sentinal, Okla., to Gene Hamilton and Lois Jean (Franklin) Dodgion.

Janice moved with her family several times as she was growing up, spending much of her childhood in Choctaw and Macomb.

She graduated from Macomb High School in 1975.

She worked in housekeeping at several places including Oklahoma Baptist University, Mission Hill Hospital and Horace Mann Elementary.

Janice enjoyed drawing in her spare time.

Preceding her in death were her father, Gene; son, Shane Lee Rush; and sister, Ellen Crager.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Kay and John Jordan; grandchild, Alyssa Jordan; mother, Lois Dodgion, all of Tecumseh; two sisters, Patricia Hipchen of California and Betty Nail of Tecumseh; brother, Alan Dodgion, of Macomb; numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at Cooper Funeral Home, Tecumseh, with the Rev. Mike Craig officiating.

Burial will be at Prairie View Cemetery.

Sandra Marie Timmons

Sandra Marie Timmons, 57, died Friday, Sept. 8, in Holdenville, Okla., after a lengthy illness.
She was born April 28, 1949, in Tishomingo to Dellis and Audra (Lewis) Timmons.

In 1967, Sandra graduated from Holdenville High School, where she play post forward for the Holdenville Wolverettes Basketball team.

She attended East Central University and Seminole State College.

Sandra worked in banking and for the State of Oklahoma Department of Juvenile Affairs until her health forced her retirement.

She is survived by her parents; sisters, Wonella Brewer and husband, Donald, all of Holdenville, and Jean Hill of Shawnee; brother, Dan Timmons, of Oklahoma City; niece, Janet White, and husband, Keith, of Ninnekah, Okla.; nephews, Ryan Brewer of Holdenville and James Edwards of Carnegie, Okla.; great-nephew, Zackery White of Ninnekah; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sandra was special to her family whom she loved dearly.

Pallbearers include John Gibbs, Gene Hadley, Gary Whitton, Buddy Grizzle, Ronnie Justice and Ron Wiseman. Honorary bearers will be Harry Turner, Kenneth Hull, Jonathan Wiseman, Jerry McCoy, Terry Byerly and Scotty Bowen.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Holdenville, with the Rev. Russell Payne officiating.

Freddie Paul Danner

Tecumseh resident Freddie Paul Danner, 55, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, at his residence of natural causes.
He was born Feb. 5, 1951, in Charleston, S.C., to Harold Danner and Dora (Hobbs) Hembree.

Freddie attended Shawnee schools and Seminole Junior College.

On Feb. 11, 1969, he married Connie Sue Rushing in Shawnee.

Freddie served in the U. S. Army for 15 years, touring in Vietnam and Germany.

He was a set up specialist for TDK and a member of Pentecostal Lighthouse.

Preceding him in death were his parents; stepfather, Garland Hembree; and son, Robert Dewayne Danner.

Survivors include his wife, Connie, of the home; two daughters, Donna Danner and Shawna Danner; four grandchildren, Austin Orman, Matthew Orman, Rebecca Sanders and William Martin; three sisters, Evelyn "Diane" Hale, Carlene Ladabouche and Christine Blake; three brothers, Troy Danner, David Danner and Lynn Jones; mother and father-in-law, Cletis and Dorothy Rushing; numerous nieces, nephews and other family.

Viva Elizabeth Norton

Shawnee resident Viva Elizabeth Norton, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Layton, Utah.
She was born July 9, 1916, in Prague to Henry Craig and Emma Mooney-Craig.

On Sept. 24, 1958, she married Lloyd E. Norton in Shawnee.

She was employed at Shawnee Milling Company for many years.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Lloyd, who died Dec. 21, 2000; brother, Henry C. Craig; sister, Nellie Carter; sons, Bob Benton, Donald Benton and Thomas Benton.

Survivors include two step-sons, Edward Eugene Norton of Decatur, Texas, and Lloyd Riley Norton of Shawnee; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Henry Eddy of Clearfield, Utah; three daughters-in-law, Martha Benton of Micanopy, Fla., Cheryl Benton and Helen Pounds of Shawnee; brother-in-law, Gene Norton and wife, Dorothy, of Shawnee; three sisters, Nadene Aylor of Seminole, Thelma Perryman of Asher and Bettie and husband, Orville Austin of Shawnee; four sisters-in-law, Betsy Norton of Grafton, Mass., Lola Mullinax of Shawnee, Dorothy Robertson of Tecumseh and Mildred Smith of New Mexico; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Iva Mae Bailey

Norman resident Iva Mae Bailey died Thursday, Sept. 21, at the age of 97.
She was born Aug. 14, 1909, on the family farm near Asher, where she also grew up.

She moved to Tecumseh with her family and attended Tecumseh High School.

On June 1, 1929, she married Glenn Oswald Bailey, who preceded her in death in 1981 after 52 years of marriage.

Iva worked as a bookkeeper for Bailey Oil Company for many years, ran her own home beauty shop for a time and was the church secretary for Central Church of Christ in Shawnee.

Iva and her husband moved to Norman in 1962 where they were both employed by the University of Oklahoma. She retired in 1974.

Iva was a lifelong member of Church of Christ, as were her parents before her and, most recently, she attended Alameda Church of Christ in Norman.

She loved cooking and was an excellent cook. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting. She made many beautiful quilts.

Iva also enjoyed travelling throughout the United States with her family. Her family always came first.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, Lillie Mae (Simpkins) Bettis and Charles Monroe Bettis; brothers, Dewey and Odem Bettis; and sister, Viola Yates.

Iva leaves many loving memories with her family. These include daughter, Susan Jones Jensen, and son-in-law, Donald Dean Jensen; grandson, Marc Glenn Jensen, his wife, Staci, and their son, Rowan; step-grandchildren, Gregory Dean Jensen, his wife, Tammy, and theirs sons, Nicolas and Zachery, and Karla Ann Taylor, her husband, Marc, and their daughters, Karissa and Karenna; nieces, Virginia Herrera, Coeta Callahan and Mary Clark; nephew, Charles Robert Yates; as well as many other loving relatives and friends.

Iva was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, who was very close to her nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at Guardian Norman Funeral Home in Norman.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday under the direction of Guardian Norman Funeral Home.


Russell L. Barton

Longtime Newalla resident Russell L. Barton, 90, died Thursday, Sept. 21, in Prague.
He was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Newalla to P.W. and Faye (Lessly) Barton.

He moved to Prague in 2003 to be near his family.

Russell served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He worked at Tinker Air Force Base and farmed.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers; one sister; and a son-in-law, Dick Bullard.

Survivors include daughter, Cindy Bullard, Prague; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Margie Barton, Newcastle; sister, Mildred Capps, Midwest City; grandchildren, Misty Bullard, Newalla, and Susan and Craig Kerr, Prague; great-granddaughters, Jillian and Jordan.

Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Parks Brothers Funeral Home in Prague and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Smith~Parks Funeral Home in Harrah.

Freddie Paul Danner

Tecumseh resident Freddie Paul Danner, 55, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, at his residence of natural causes.

Chandler resident Magdalene Elizabeth Tally died Saturday, Sept. 23, at the age of 91.

Richard Dale Moran

Richard Dale Moran, 63, of Tecumseh passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, Sept. 22, 2006.
He was born to E.C. (Jack) and Johnnie Lee (Ussery) Moran on June 11, 1943, in Oklahoma City.

Richard lived in Enid for many of his younger years before moving to Tecumseh where he graduated from high school in 1961.

In 1962 he joined the Army Reserves, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major in 2003. After returning from basic training he went to work at Tinker Air Force base as an aircraft mechanic. He retired after 39 years of service as Planning Chief in 1999.

Richard was a great cook and enjoyed the appreciation shown by those who sampled his food.

One of the joys of his life were his two grandchildren whom he saw and cared for on a daily basis. He was so proud of each of their accomplishments - from their first words to their first steps. He kept journals recording their daily progress. They will cherish the memories of their granddfather.

Richard was married to Connie Shatto in Tecumseh on March 27, 1965. They were constant companions, never seeing one without the other. They enjoyed camping, pottery and traveling together.

Family was very important to Richard. He enjoyed raising his two children. This is reflected in the type of parents they have become.

He was an active member of the Downtown Pentecostal Holiness Church of Shawnee for the past 25 years.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survied by his wife, Connie of the home; children, Stace Moran-Davis and her husband Cory Davis of Tecumseh, Richard D. Russell L. Barton

Longtime Newalla resident Russell L. Barton, 90, died Thursday, Sept. 21, in Prague.
He was born Feb. 16, 1916, in Newalla to P.W. and Faye (Lessly) Barton.

He moved to Prague in 2003 to be near his family.

Russell served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He worked at Tinker Air Force Base and farmed.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers; one sister; and a son-in-law, Dick Bullard.

Survivors include daughter, Cindy Bullard, Prague; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Margie Barton, Newcastle; sister, Mildred Capps, Midwest City; grandchildren, Misty Bullard, Newalla, and Susan and Craig Kerr, Prague; great-granddaughters, Jillian and Jordan.

Homer Dobbins

Lifelong Maud resident Homer Dobbins, 85, died Sunday, Sept. 24, at Seminole Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 30, 1920, in Sage, Ark., to Dewey Schofield Dobbins and Sallie (Helm) Dobbins.

Mr. Dobbins served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received an honorable discharge Feb. 2, 1946. He also attained rank of Storekeeper First Class and received the Good Conduct medal and Victory medal.

After his military service, Dobbins worked more than 30 years as a postal clerk at the Maud Post Office.

He was a member of Maud Church of Christ.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Thomas Dobbins; one sister, Mary Pate; and one nephew, Tommy Pate.


Fred Phillips

Shawnee resident Fred Phillips died Sunday, Sept. 24, at Unity Hospital.
He was born Dec. 31, 1937, to Audie L. Millsap and Fred D. Phillips in Bryant, Okla.

Fred served in the U.S. Navy as a torpedo mans mate on the U.S.S. Fletcher and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and San Diego, Calif.

He lived in Shawnee for 31 years and was employed by South Central Industries Inc. before taking medical leave.

Fred's favorite pastime was being OU's number one fan.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Donald Phillips; two granddaughters, Heaven Phillips and Camille Woodall.

Survivors include wife, Doris J. Phillips of the home; five children; Fred D. Phillips, Lenore L. Woodall, Andrea G. Phillips, David Phillips and wife, Elizabeth, and Jolynn Klaus and husband, Roger; stepchildren, Aaron Arellano and wife, Mary Ann, Debra Campbell and husband, Gary, and Gwen Kirkpatrick and husband, Dennis; 27 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Blubaugh and husband, Steve, and Gayle Holman and husband, Don; one brother, Geary L. Phillips and wife, Mary; numerous nieces, nephews and other loved family members.

Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Resthaven Funeral Home in Shawnee.

Service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Central Church of Christ, Shawnee, with Robert Prater and Dwyane Dennis officiating.

Wilbert Joe Edwards

Meeker resident Mr. W. Joe Edwards, 74, passed away Saturday, Sept. 23, at his home.
He was born Dec. 11, 1932 in Tadeuh, Texas, to John E. and Florence Mae Mowles.

Joe was raised in the Butler area. At a very young age he started farming with his family. In the early 1950's he was drafted to the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War as a cook. Later he met and married Miss Lois Gean Walker in Reno, Nev., on August 18, 1956. She preceded him in death Nov. 7, 2003.

The young couple made their home in California for several years. Joe worked as a truck driver, hauling mobile homes until 1976 when he and his wife moved to Oklahoma City. There he was employed as a diesel mechanic until his retirement in 1996.

He was a member of the Liberty Worship Center in Oklahoma City. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting.

He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Barbara, Lillie, and an infant sister; brothers, Boots, Haskell, Harold, Quentin and George.

He is survived by three daughters, Linda Withrow and husband, Steve, Cathy Solomon and her husband, Clifford, all of Oklahoma City; Clifford Stokely and her husband, Charles; sons, David Edwards and wife, Annette, Meeker, and Steven Edwards, Boley; 27 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Hernandez, Oklahoma City, and Myrtle McCoy, California; brothers, Donald Edwards and Lewis Edwards, Butler.

Service will be 10:00 a.m today at Kiesau Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Shane Hall officiating burial will conclude in the Osceola Cemetery, northeast of Butler, under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home.

Edith Mathis

Shawnee resident Edith (Benedict) Mathis, 91, died Sunday, Sept. 24, at an Oklahoma City hospital.
She was born Jan. 25, 1915, in Wetumka to William Valentine and Minnie Pearl (Winchester) Benedict.

Edith graduated as valedictorian from both Wetumka High School and Wetumka Junior College. She also graduated from The University of Oklahoma in 1938.

On March 23, 1940, she married William Floyd Mathis. He preceded her in death Sept. 26, 1981.

She had lived in Shawnee since 1945.

Edith was a second and third grade elementary teacher at Grove schools for 18 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God for many years.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; sister, Eva Lockhart; two brothers, Nelzie and William Raymond.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Roma and William McElwee of Oklahoma City and Reinette Young of Norman; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Max Mathis of Norman and Rhon and Donna Mathis of Shawnee; five grandchildren, Michele McElwee, Christopher Mathis, Connor Young, Jason Mathis and Alicia Mathis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Service Chapel, Shawnee, with Pastor Tracy Barnett officiating.

Oklahoma City resident Marie (Lempges) Beaver died Monday, Sept. 25, at an Oklahoma City nursing center.
She was born July 9, 1909, to Jacob and Josephine (Wozniak) Lempges in McLoud.

She married Jack Beaver who preceded her in death in 1955.

Marie worked as a bookkeeper for Harry Mortgage Co and was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Steve and Frank; two sisters, Millie Mason and Lucia Hull; one niece, Mary Jo Foster.

Survivor include one brother, Jake Lempges; nieces and nephews, Bob and Janice Lempges, Sylvia and Gary Godwin and Rita and Kenny Sparks, all of McLoud; great nieces and nephews, Candy Sebert, Denise Speed, Sue Greenfield, Bobby Foster, Cindy Foster, Diane Teel, Donald Lempges, Marsha Shipley, Steve Lempges, Mark Lempges, Kathy Holland and Lisa Lempges; and a number of other relatives.

Violet Merkle Burton

Lifelong Maud resident Violet Merkle Burton, 100, passed from this life Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Sunset Estates Care Center in Tecumseh.
She was born March 29, 1906, in Oklahoma Territory (Maud) to Joe Barton Merkle and Sallie (Scott) Merkle. She would continue to live on the family farm where she was born until two years ago.

Violet graduated from Maud High School in 1924 and continued her education at Oklahoma Baptist University, East Central University and in Durant at Southeastern State Teachers College earning her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education.

After, she studied at Oklahoma University in Norman and attained a Master's degree in elementary education.

She taught school for 47 years, one year in Castle, two years in Kenific, and then back to Maud during the "Oil Boom," where she taught for 44 years.

One year she had enrolled 86, and another year, 66 fifth graders, one of whom was 17-years-old.

Violet married Paul Burton on Aug. 28, 1929, in Oklahoma. He died in an oil field accident Feb. 22, 1933, after only 3 years of marriage.

Mrs. Burton was a charter member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Maud, where she was pianist for many years. She also was a longtime member and pianist for Eastern Star for 75 years. A special pin was made for her, for no one had ever been a member of that organization for so long.

Mrs. Burton enjoyed traveling. Her travels took her to Europe, Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Panama Canal and most every state in the union. She believed making slides of the special places she traveled made her teaching more interesting and effective.

Violet's dad was Joe Merkle. When Joe was about to finish eight grade in Norman, Oklahoma Territory, in 1889-90, his father, John Merkle, realized there was no additional schooling available for his five children. John and a group of friends with children of the same age group formed a group call "Concerned Parents," each one contributing $50 to lobby the senators and representatives of the Oklahoma Territory to start a university.

The University of Oklahoma was started as preparatory school for these young people. Violet's dad, Joe, and his brother, Fred Merkle, went on to play on the first University of Oklahoma football team. Until several years ago, Violet had attended all the OU home football games.

Violet was also recording secretary for Senior Citizens Center and delivered meals on wheels for years. She also was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Historical Society of Maud; and the County, State and National Retired Teachers Organizations.

Also preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, John Henry Merkle, in 1976.

Violet, known as "Bito" to her toddler nephew who couldn't pronounce "Violet," is survived by nephew, Joe B. "Butch" Merkle, and his wife, Barbara, of Maud; niece, Dr. Patricia Baggett of Las Cruces, N.M., and her children, Alice Baggett Strouse and Molly Baggett Kaplan; niece, Sally "Sissy" Mock, and her husband, Randall, of Oklahoma City, and their children, Adam and Caroline Mock.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful people at Heartland Hospice, Shawnee, and the staff of Sunset Estates in both Tecumseh and Maud. Also, and especially, the family wishes to thank Violet's special caretaker, Emral Guinn, of St. Louis, Okla., for looking after this wonderful woman who left us on Sept. 26, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Maud with the Rev. Carl Whitfield and the Rev. Gene Teel officiating.

Burial will follow at Cummings Cemetery, Maud.


Mary Weatherford

Former Alice, Texas, resident Mary Weatherford, 85, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at a Kingsville, Texas, hospital.
She was born May 24, 1921, in Keystone, Okla.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Vernon "Slim" Weatherford.

Survivors include daughter, Marcie and her husband, Henry R. Schiro; grandson, Antony, his wife, Wendi, and son, Gavin, all of Kingsville; granddaughter, Cara M. (Schiro) Porter, her husband, Morris, and their daughter, Amara, of Houston, Texas; stepson, Dewayne Weatherford and family, San Antonio, Texas.

We are all saddened by her departure but find relief in knowing she is finally home.

Service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Service Chapel.

A. Christine Mauldin

McLoud resident Christine (Haislip) Mauldin, 82, passed away at her home Wednesday, Sept. 27, after a long illness.
She was born in Dale on Feb. 19, 1924, to Burness and Ethel Haislip.

Christine was raised and spent her life in the McLoud/Dale area.

She began her working career at Seikels Department Store in McLoud. She then worked at the old City Hospital in Shawnee. Her next job was at Tinker Air Force Base where she retired after working as a teletype operator for 20 years.

After staying at home for awhile she went to work at Hillcrest Hospital as a secretary in the dietary department for 12 years.

Christine loved to travel and took several trips with Gad-About Tours of Shawnee.

She was a member of Dale Church of Christ. She also was a member of BPWA and AARP for many years.

Christine enjoyed playing cards with her friends at McLoud Senior Citizens Center until her illness forced her to stay home.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Travis, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Jaqueta and Albert Baldwin of McLoud; son and daughter-in-law, Travis "T.E." Jr. and Marsha Mauldin of Midwest City; three grandsons, Dr. Todd Mauldin, Major Nick Mauldin and Dustin Mauldin; two granddaughters, Christy Baldwin and Carcy Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Miranda Haseltine, Zachary Smith, Mollyann Mauldin, Isabella Mauldin, Nicholas Mauldin, Hunter Mauldin and Walker Mauldin; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation with the family will be 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Dale Church of Christ, Dale.

The funeral service honoring Christine's life will be 2 p.m. Friday at Dale Church of Christ.

Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery.

Longtime Seminole County resident George Wallace Bear died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the age of 43.

Shawnee resident Claudie Bailey, 62, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at her home.
She was born May 24, 1944, in Seminole to Claud McQuerry and Ora Mae (Tate) McQuerry McKee.

Claudie attended Varnum schools and graduated from St. Gregory's University.

She was an accountant for Preferred Management.

Claudie was a member of Day Star Bible Baptist Church, where she was the treasurer. She also was active in BPW.

Claudie lived most of her life in Shawnee.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Amos Price; two brothers, Joe McQuerry and J.D. McQuerry.

Survivors include brother and sister-in-law, Earl Gene and Carol McQuerry of Meeker; sister-in-law, Patricia McQuerry Coker of Shawnee; nieces and nephews, Diana Austin of Duncan and Jeanie Fuller of Oklahoma City, Trisha Kinnett of Shawnee, David McQuerry of Shawnee, Cindy Fields of Oklahoma City and Greg McQuerry of Shawnee; and a number of other friends and relatives.

Glenn Casteel

Tecumseh resident Glen Casteel, 58, died Monday, Sept. 25, in Oklahoma City.
He was born April 16, 1948, in Culver City, Calif., to Junior Clytice and Marie Frances (Maxwell) Casteel.

Although born in California, he lived in Texas for a short time before moving to Shawnee when he was 10-years-old.

Glenn was a 1966 graduate of Shawnee High School. He also attended Seminole Junior College.

He served in the U.S. Navy for six years on the USS Constellation in Vietnam.

On Oct. 7, 1975, he married Betsy Spencer in Chandler.

Glenn worked for Checker Cab before going to work at Carter Hall Detention Center in 1989. He later transferred to COJC in 1998, where he was currently serving as a Juvenile Specialist.

Glenn, a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, gave his life to the Lord in 1999.

He enjoyed coaching little league baseball and softball while his children were young. He also enjoyed yard work, playing board games, spending time with his grandchildren and watching OU football. He especially enjoyed family gatherings.

Preceding him in death were his father in 1975; stepfather, George Giles in 1999; and granddaughter, Meski' in 2001.

Survivors include wife, Betsy, of the home; sons and their spouses, Houston and Teresa Wolfe of Dale, Richard and Misti Wolfe of Okemah, Michael Casteel of Shawnee and Bobby and Donna Warden of Yukon; daughters and their spouses, Tina Wolfe and Rick Hartman of Shawnee and Sherry and Charlie Clem of Prague; mother, Marie Giles of Shawnee; thirteen grandsons; three granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; brother, Fred Casteel of Eufaula; sister, Treva Jaggers of Tecumseh; numerous nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law, Vivian Bender, Rita Vizenor and Loretta Murphy.

Dorothy L. Brown

Tecumseh resident Dorothy L. Brown, 77, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Tuttle, Okla.
She was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Center, Okla., to Neal J. and Addie Mae (Cook) McDonald.

Although born in Center, she grew up in Vanoss, Okla., where she graduated from Vanoss High School.

She lived in Del City until 1960 when she moved to south Oklahoma City. She lived there until 1978 when she moved to Tecumseh. She lived in Tecumseh since that time.

On Aug. 19, 1959, she married Miller E. Brown in El Reno. He preceded her in death on Nov. 9, 2004.

Dorothy was a homemaker; and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; daughter-in-law, Eddie L. Jones; grandson, Jason K. Jones; four sisters, Letha Kilgore, Mary Haffner, Mable Johnson and Jewel Hazenburg.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Terry Armstrong of Tuttle; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Earl T. Jones of Newalla, Ronnie and Donna Brown of Tecumseh and Rickey and Debbie Brown of Norman; one sister, Betty Jo Bryant of Stratford; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Bonnie McDonald of Spencer; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many friends and family members.

Phoebe Marion O'Dell

Tryon resident Phoebe Marion O'Dell, 72, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Tryon.
She was born Nov. 1, 1933, in Perkins to Ernest and Bessie Mary Kent McClellan.

On Sept. 17, 1959, she married Buddy Jerald O'Dell in Guthrie.

Phoebe, an actress, cashier, hostess and tribal politician, lived a very busy and quite varied life.

She was cast in five movies. Titles included: "The Gypsy Moths," "The Last of the Dog Men," "North and South," "Possom" and "Wysteria."

She served in the Iowa Tribe in several offices, including treasurer and secretary. Her greatest achievement was being the first lady chief of the Iowa Tribe.

She assisted in interior finishing and design of three houses in the Shawnee area through Central Tribes of the Shawnee Area.

Phoebe also was a paralegal and throughout her life acquired a great deal of education, although it may not have been formal education.

She was president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge No. 3251, Wichita, Kan., vice-chairman of the American Legion of Chandler and a member of National Congress of American Indians.

Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Cheryl Lynn O'Dell; son, Eugene Lynn O'Dell; and brother, Pierce Leonard McClellan.

Survivors include husband, Buddy; son, Jerald O'Dell of Tryon; daughter, Rachel Lynn Walkup, and husband, Philip, of Wichita, Kan.; three grandchildren;and five great-grandchildren.

Phoebe was a tremendous influence to her people. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband, children, family and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bah Kho Je Tribal Complex in Perkins with Pastors Ted Gibson, Harold Hughes and Charles Wall officiating.

Burial will be at Kent Family Cemetery in Perkins.


Jack Ziegler

North Richland Hills, Texas, resident Jack Ziegler, 85, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, at his home.
He was born May 16, 1921, in Prague. He served in World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Edna Elaine Ziegler, and sister, June Marler.

Survivors include sister, Charliene Kimery; brother, Jeral Ziegler; daughters, Jackie Skaggs, Theresa Cox and husband, Darrell, Linda Manning and husband, Ivan; step-children, Harriet Brady and husband, Bob, Linda Tooley and husband, Ted, Jim Tippie and wife, Marjo; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Shannon Rufe Snow Funeral Chapel, Fort Worth, Texas.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Prague, with visitation one hour prior to service.

Burial will follow at Prague Cemetery.

Audrey Paul Wilmoth

Shawnee resident Audrey Paul Wilmoth was born in Ada on July 19, 1947. He passed away peacefully on Sept. 25 at a local hospital.
Paul was a man of many talents, much humor and quick wit. He can be seen "forever young" in more than 20 movies filmed in the '60s and '70s (two with Jack Nicholson.) He also worked behind the scenes as a key grip and choreographer, among other things.

Paul was preceded in death by his father Audrey O. "Rod" Wilmoth; brothers, Melvin Wilmoth and Larry Nickerson; and sister, Susie Morgan.

He is survived by his mother, Kathy, and step-father, Frank Young, both of Tecumseh; two sisters, Lola Bastible of Newport, Wash., and Annita Stacy of the home; three daughters, Kathee Wilmoth of Las Vegas, Nev., Liberty and Jeanita Wilmoth, both of Shawnee; two sons, Bill Wilmoth of Tecumseh and Rod Wilmoth of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren and numerous extended family members.

Paul is deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

Viewing will begin on Friday at Cooper Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Tecumseh Cemetery.

Alice Henry

Shawnee resident Alice Henry, 67, passed away Monday, Sept. 26, at her home.
She was born June 28, 1939, in Kentucky to Fred and Lena Bentley.

In 1972, Alice was united in marriage with Hal H. Henry in Las Vegas, Nev. They have made their home in Shawnee for the past two years.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she enjoyed cooking for friends and family. She also enjoyed decorating her home which had plenty of space for visitors.

Alice was especially proud of her beautiful flower garden, where she spent many happy hours tending to it.

Seven years ago, Alice met Joanie Wood in California and they developed an enduring friendship that lasted throughout Alice's battle with cancer.

When Hal and Alice decided to move to Oklahoma, Joanie and her husband, Don, also purchased a home here. Joanie and Alice spent hours together sipping coffee and indulging in their mutual passion for antique shopping and garage sales.

Alice was active in her community, both in California and Oklahoma. She worked alongside her husband with Friends of the NRA to raise money for youth education grants through the NRA Foundation.

In addition, she participated in the Shooting for a Miracle Fundraisers for Jerry's Kids on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association for eight years.

Preceding her in death were her parents; first husband, Ken Rickerson; son, Ricky Rickerson.

Survivors include husband, Hal; children, Cathy Street, Carla Coleman, Debra Garcia and Kenny Rickerson; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister, Barbara Nichols of Tennessee.

Service will be 3:30 p.m. today at Walker Funeral Service Chapel.

Burial will be in Dixon, Mo., where Alice will be laid to rest next to her son.


Jimmie C. Brooks

Longtime Maud/Seminole area resident Jimmie C. Brooks, 68, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Shawnee.
Graveside service will be noon Saturday at Vamoosa Cemetery with the Rev. Tim Harjo officiating. Service is under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home, Seminole.


Dennis Bradshaw

Meeker resident Dennis Bradshaw died Monday, Sept. 25, at the age of 64.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Meeker.

Jewel Reneth Strayhorn

Longtime Seminole resident Jewel Reneth Strayhorn, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Coles Nursing Home in Guthrie, where she was currently residing.
Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Little Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Cline officiating.

Burial will follow at Little Cemeetery, Seminole County.


Debra Rae Scallorn

Former longtime Seminole resident Debra Rae (Bowles) Scallorn, currently of McLoud, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Mercy Medical Center in Oklahoma City at the age of 50.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, Seminole, with the Rev. Steve Cline officiating.

Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Seminole, under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
