Bloody Battle In Wetumka Sunday One Dead Another Wounded

Ben SMITH Shot And Killed By Officer Who Also Received Wound That May Prove Fatal

Sunday at noon Jeff SMITH and Munroe REED engaged in a fight over a dog. Marshal TABNER sought to interfere and and Ben SMITH fired at the marshal. The bullet cutting his collar. The latter returned the fire and killed SMITH. Fearing further trouble TABNER after calling to REED to follow retired to a hardware store to replenish his supply of ammunition and was followed by Jeff SMITH who shot him while the former was in the store, the marshal's revolver failing to fire in an effort to shoot his new antagonist.

SMITH then knocked TABNER down, pushed him out of the door and compelled him to crawl on his hands and knees a distance of 200 feet where Ben SMITH lay dead. Having relieved the officer of his revolver SMITH en route beat TABNER over the head with the weapon while with his own he kept back a crowd which had gathered.

"When he crawls to the dead body of my brother and falls over it, I will kill him." SMITH told the crowd.

The unique procession was near the dead body when some one interfered and TABNER gaining his feet fled, while some balls from SMITH's gun followed him. He escaped to a restaurant where he secreted himself and was saved.

Ira SMITH, another brother, then appeared on the scene and he and Jeff patrolled the street with loaded revolvers for some time, while Munroe REED; armed with a Winchester, guarded the building into which the officer ran.

Late Sunday evening Ira and Jeff SMITH and L. SIPES, who alleged to have provided Jeff SMITH with a gun, were placed in jail.

WELLS
Funeral Rites Tuesday
Services for J. C. WELLS, 63 year old Hughes county farmer, who died Monday at his home eight and one-half miles southwest of Holdenville, were held Tuesday. L. E. STEWART of Holdenville officiated at the services. Death was caused by paralysis.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Alva, 17, and four daughters, Mrs.Bill CALDWELL, Mrs. J. OF. JONES, Mrs. Doc CALDWELL and Mrs. B. C. CLEVELAND all of route four.
C. E. ARNOLD funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.

KNUTSON
Memorial services for Richard KNUTSON of Holdenville will be held Saturday, April 7, at Hudson-Phillips Chapel.
He was born Jan. 2, 1953 in Hinesville, Ga, to Anna Lee (MORGAN) and Clifford KNUTSON and died March 31 at Holdenville General Hospital at theage of 48. He was reared in northern Oklahoma and attended Pawhuska and Tulsa schools. He was married to Cynthia GILMORE on Feb. 14, 1983 at Las Vegas, Nv. Mr. Knutson was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Anna KNUTSON.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia; a daughter, Brandy; a son, Vincent; two brothers, Milton  and Steve ; a sister Gail; and several uncles, aunts, nieces nephews and other relatives.
Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville.

PRINCE
Graveside services for Agnes M. FIELDS PRINCE of Holdenville were held April 4 at Holdenville Cemetery with Rev. Meredith ROBINSON officiating.   She was born Sept. 10, 1919 to Wiley and Olive FIELDS in Pharoah and died March 31 at Holdenville General Hospital at the age of 81.   She was reared in the Henryetta area until she was 14 when the family moved to Holdenville where she graduated high school in 1937.   In September , 1949, she married John B. PRINCE and the family lived in Roswell, N. M. and later Sacramento, Ca.   In 1997, Mrs. PRINCE returned to Holdenville where she remained until he death.
Mrs. PRINCE was a member of the First Christian Church of Holdenville.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley and Olive FIELDS; herhusband, John B. PRINCE; on sister Dortha TAYLOR; and one brother Curtis FIELDS.
Survivors include four sisters, Geneva, Nadine, Nancy and Sudie; a brother, B. J. and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Interment was under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home of Holdenville.
