Obituary
Thursday, April 24, 1941, p. 2, col. 5 -
Ellis HUGHES was born to Rev. and Mrs. J. T. Hughes, April 30, 1875,
at Afton, Iowa, and departed this life, April 15, 1941, at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. O. C. CANFIELD, near Sharon, at the age of 65 years, 11 months
and 15 days. He died of heart trouble. He was the great grandson of a
Revolutionary soldier.
Mr. Hughes spent his early childhood in the Methodist parsonage in Iowa.
Later he married Miss Martha Francis at Conway, Iowa, and they came to Ellis
county in 1900 and homesteaded a claim 6 1/2 miles southwest of Fargo where
they resided a long time. To this union was born five children, one died
in infancy. His wife preceded him in death about 23 years ago. Since then
he took the place of both mother and father until his children were grown
up.
Mr. Hughes was well known in this country as he had been an auctioneer at
sales unitl just lately, and will be greatly missed.
He leaves to mourn his passing his son, George, of Newton, Kas., three daughters,
Mrs. Pearl Latin, Higgins, Texas, Mrs. Margaret Canfield, Sharon, and Eve
of Freedom; two sisters, Mrs. Eva McGee of Fargo and Miss Inza Hughes of
Conway, Iowa; two brothers, Will Hughes of Bedford, Iowa, and Isaac Hughes
of Conway, Iowa, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church with
Rev. R. K. Hooper, officiating. Burial was in the Fargo cemetery.
My source Ellis County Oklahoma Cemeteries was in error about the date of
death for Martha Francis Hughes. She died on January 26, 1919. Fargo had
a newspaper until 1918, and no one published the Fargo news in 1919, so there
was no obituary for her.
