BALDWIN DIES IN GEORGIA

W. A. Baldwin, father of A. W. Baldwin of Lawton, died at his home in Dawson, Ga., yesterday. Mrs. A. W. Baldwin formerly was Miss Virginia Lockett of Duncan. She and her husband have been at Dawson for the past two weeks.

CALLAWAY RITES SATURDAY

Funeral services for Mrs. C. E. Callaway, 28, former Duncan resident, who died Sunday at Ventura, Calif., will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ here. The Beeson Grantham Funeral Home will be in charge. Burial will be in the Duncan Cemetery.

MRS. WAL WILLIAMS, COUNTY'S SECOND WOMAN SHERIFF, DIES

Marlow - Mrs. Minnie L. Williams, 70, widow of former Sheriff Wal Williams who was killed May 13, 1930, in a gun fight with bank robbers, and herself a former sheriff of Stephens county, died at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of her husband's sister, Mrs. Fred Vaught.

Mrs. Williams had been ill for about four weeks. She moved from the home near Sterling, where she lived several years, to the Vaught home in Marlow about a month ago.

Mrs. Williams was born in Illinois. She came from El Dorado, Kan., to Marlow in 1901. She was a member of the Marlow First Christian Church.

Sheriff Williams took office in 1929, J. W. Marshall, former county attorney, said. On May 13, 1930, he was fatally wounded near Highway 29 and U. S. 81 in a gun fight with the Cunningham brothers, sought for a filling station robbery in which I. B. Gossett, Duncan policeman, was seriously wounded. Several other officers took part in the fight. A monument to Williams was erected near the spot several years ago.

Mrs. Williams, following her husband's death, was appointed by the county commissioners to fill our her husband's unexpired term, becoming the second woman sheriff in Stephens county. Mrs. Bill Bates, who husband died in office, also previously had filled out an unexpired term.

Surviving Mrs. Williams was a son, Don E. Williams of Fairbanks, Alaska; a granddaughter, Diana Williams, Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Towell and Mrs. Amy Bailey of Sterling, and a brother, Charles Powers, Ventura, Calif.

Efforts to communicate with the son failed yesterday. It was believed that he might be on his way to Marlow. Unless some word is received from him, funeral services, directed by the Steele Funeral Home, probably will be held at the Marlow First Christian Church at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in the Marlow Cemetery.

HALL, KANSAS CITY GRAIN TRADER, DIES

Kansas City, Mo. (U.P.) -- Herbert F. Hall, for more than 50 years a grain trader and one of the nation's largest grain exporters, died late yesterday. He was 82.

He founded the Hall-Robinson Grain Company here in 1888. It later became the Hal-Baker Grain Company in 1930. Three years later he entered the Hart-Bartlett-Sturtevant Grain Company as chairman of the board.

TODAY'S COMMENTS

DUNCAN DOESN'T TAKE A BACK seat to any other municipality in being a good business town. We could extend congratulations to Lawton, for a splendid record, and law our record right along beside Lawton for comparison

* * *

Lawton's year-end volume of retail sales, as measured by the Oklahoma Tax Commissioner's reports, was something of a record. There was a tremendous gain over a year ago, and Lawton moved into fifth place in the state in volume.

* * *

Duncan's year-end volume, the same source indicated, showed a 78 percent increase over the year before, which was nearly seven times greater than the average increase for the state at large. Duncan moved into 14th place.

* * *

Fourteenth place in the state is considerably better than it appears, when Duncan residents take a second glance at the situation. Duncan was 22nd in population, on the 1940 census figures, and was 14th in retail sales volume. Lawton was the 6th city in Oklahoma in population, and 5th in sales volume.

* * *

In a year's time, Lawton moved from 10th to 5th place in sales volume, and Duncan from 16th to 14th. Lawton's increase was remarkable, Duncan's was consistent and sustained in a bracket far ahead of its population rank. We surpass each month, the sales volume of five to eight cities larger than Duncan. And we don't believe there is another Oklahoma municipality which can claim a record as good as that.

NANALOU GREENHAW CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY

To compliment Miss Nannalou Greenhaw on her birthday anniversay, Miss Mildred Horn entertained a group of intimate friends of the honoree with a party in her home at 504 South 9th street Thursday evening.

Several parlor games added to the merriment, after which the entertainment was concluded with dancing. At a late hour, refreshments were served the 14 celebrants. Attending the birthday affair were:

HULSEY-HARTMAN VOWS ARE READ IN GUTHRIE CEREMONY

Mr. and Mrs. John P. Hulsey of Edmond, Okla., former Duncan residents, are announcing the marriage of their daughter, Zella Hester, to Mr. Theodore Joseph Hartman, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. J. Hartman of Oklahoma City.

The ceremony was performed in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on February 21, with the Rev. J. E. Buttrill officiating at the exchange of vows. Mrs. Butrill and Mr. Donald E. Powers were the only attendants.

The bride is a graduate of the Duncan High School Class of 1934, and a member of the National Honorary Society. She received her higher education at Central State College, Edmond, where she was also an honor student. She was awarded her degree there in 1939. Since that time she has been employed as a teach of English and history in the Nardin, Okla., high school, where she plans to continue with her work for the time being.

Mr. Hartman was graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City; after which he was a student of Central State College. He is employed on the staff of the Oklahoma Unemployment Compensation and Placement Division in Oklahoma City.

CAR HITS A MULE

Henry W. Gandy, 23, of Temple reported that he and his wife were unhurt last night when his car struck a mule on the highway 4 1/2 miles east of Comanche. The car was slightly damaged.

Mrs. Don McCortney, deputy county clerk, was confined to her home at 301 1/2 South 10th today by illness.

Mrs. L. B. Simmons and daughter, Mrs. H. B. Alspaugh, have returned from Shreveport and New Orleans, La. They were the guests of friends in Shreveport, and joined Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Blaydes and daughter, Mrs. N. F. Weatherly of Enid, for the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. After a few days there, they returned to Shreveport for a longer visit.

TRIPLETS ARE ADOPTED BY O. C. COUPLE

Oklahoma City - An Oklahoma city couple today became the foster parents of a set of triplets, not yet two years old, whose parents were unable to support them.

The triplets were born in a dugout in Mary, 1939, in Caddo county to Mr. and Mrs. Claude Reagan. The famly already had eight children. At first Mrs. Reagan was reluctant to give up the triplets, but when told they would be well provided for, she consented. The adoption papers were signed in county court.

Mrs. Mabel Bassett, state commissioner of charities and corrections, aided in finding the babies a permanent home. The couplel that adopted them had been looking after the triplets for 14 months. Two boys and a girl make up the set.

Sam Webster, head of the science and chemistry department in Marlow High School addressed the Rotary Club Tuesday on, "Preparedness Training in Schools". Joe Callaway was in charge of the program. Keith McQuiston of Perry, Paul Crane, L. E. Kincannon and John Williams, all of Duncan were visitors.

Dixon Graves was in charge of the program at the Lions Club Wednesday. The Rev. R. W. Dewey Etchinson of Comanche was guest speaker. A clarinet duet was played by Ode Lynn Short and Jackie Graves. Rex Cotton was re-instated as a member. Guests were the Rev. T. P. Haskins and T. J. Richards of Oklahoma City. Mrs. Ray Cox will present next weeks program.

McMackin, pastor, will act as host. J. G. Loveless of Ada, moderator, will be in charge and H. A. Stephenson of Ada will act as clerk. The Rev. C. L. Bolding of Tecumseh, missionary preacher of state presbytery will attend.

The Presbyterian auxiliary of the womens' foreign missions will convene Friday with the Rev. J. R. Reed of Duncan giving the consecration service address. The Presbyterial board of Christian education, young people works, will meet Saturday.

Death Takes Loco Farmer At His Home

Monroe Albert Southerland, 67, a Stephens county resident for 31 years, died at 2 a. m. today at his farm home near Loco. He had been ill for several weeks.

Southerland was a native of Alabama. He came to Oklahoma in 1908, settling near Loco, and became a cattleman and farmer. He was a deacon of the Loco Baptist Church.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Jennie Southerland, and four children. W. L. Southerland, Loco; R. R. Southerland, Healdton; Mrs. T. D. Mitchelmorre, Salem, Ill., and Mrs. Frank Sutton, Nocona, Tex.; and a nephew, Carl Burke, Loco.

Funeral services, directed by the Rangeley-Goodman Funeral Home, will be held at the Loco Baptist Church at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The Rev. J. G. Heard will officiate, assisted by the pastor, the Rev. I. C. Watson.
