HAGERSTRAND
Memorial services for Martin A. HAGERSTRAND, 87, of Tahlequah, were held
July 10, at the First Presbyterian Church of Tahlequah with Wilma MANKILLER,
former chief of the Cherokee Nation speaking. Arrangements were under the
direction of Hart Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Mr. HAGERSTRAND was born November 10, 1911, in Chicago, Ill., the son of
Earnest L. and Jennie PALM HAGERSTRAND, and he passed from this life July
7, 1999 in Fort Gibson, Okla.
Martin married Marion BROWN on February 2, 1946, in Tahlequah, Okla. A retired
United Staes Army Colonel, he served his country from 1934-1960. Colonel
HAGERSTRAND was well known for promoting tourism in northeastern Oklahoma
and for his efforts to improve public understanding of Cherokee history.
He also was founder and former director of the Cherokee National Historical
Society, which produced the Trail of Tears drama at the center for many years,
and served as president of the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in Muskogee.
He was deeply involved in the Presbyterian Church both locally and
nationally.
Mr. HAGERSTRAND is survived by his wife, Marion; one son, Jack; one daughter,
Nola, all of Okla; and many relatives, as well as a host of friends and loved
ones.
SALYER
Funeral services for Dollie Donna DRYWATER SALYER, 52, of Ft. Gibson, were
held July 29, at Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Jerry, Terry and Joe HOOPER, Loren, Bossie and Joe DRYWATER.
Honorary pallbearers were Danny Jr., Dale and David COOK.
Ms. SALYER was born August 10, 1946 at Tahlequah, the daughter of Dave and
Jennie DRUM DRYWATER and she passed from this life on July 25, 1999, at
Tahlequah.
She attended Muskogee schools. On March 17, 1979 she married Elbert SALYER
at Tulsa, Okla. Ms. SALYER was a member of the Johnson Prairie Baptist
Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Lee,
Pumpkin and George DRYWATER. Survivors include, one son, Eddie; two daughters,
Connie and Teresa; three brothers, Stanley, Andy and Kenneth; one sister,
Geneva; three grandchildren, Tiffany, Ashley and Nicholas, all of Okla.
HANSON
Funeral services for Bob Mouse HANSON, 59, of Cleveland, Ohio, were held
July 14, at Johnson Prairie Baptist Church with Rev. Arch FOREMAN and Rev.
Felix JOHNSON officiating. Burial was in the Johnson Prairie Cemetery under
the direction of the Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Ray WADDEN, Jeff STOPP and Gary, Bobbie, Larry and Joe MOUSE.
Honorary pallbearer was Ike MOUSE.
Mr. HANSON was born April 20, 1940 at Claremore, Okla., the son of Simon
and Katie WATERFALLING MOUSE and he passed from this life on July 7, 1999
at his home in Cleveland, Ohio.
He grew up in the Kenwood area and attended Bagley School Mr. HANSON worked
as a machinist in the Continental Can Factory. He was of the Baptist
faith.
Mr. HANSON was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Christopher and
one brother, Robert MOUSE. Survivors include, two daughters, Sherry and Tina;
and two grandchildren, April and Ashley, all of Ohio.
JAMES
Graveside services for Junior Ray JAMES, 69, were held July 9, in the Barber
Cemetery with Rev. Olaf PUCKETT officiating and under the direction of Hart
Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Junior Ray JAMES was born June 15, 1930, in Whitesboro, Okla., and departed
this life on July 6, 1999 in Tulsa, Okla.
On July 17, 1961, Junior was joined in marriage to Fannie Sue HOOPER. He
was a farmer and mechanic and was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. JAMES was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, and sisters. Survivors
include his wife; four children, Vicki and Sherry of Okla., Tony of Kansas
and Sue of Colo.; twelve grandchildren, one great great grandchild; a
brother-in-law, Harry; and a nephew, Irl.
DEERINWATER
Funeral services for Letitia Marie DEERINWATER, 21, of Tahlequah, were held
July 8, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Bill HOLCOME officiating. Burial
was in the Fairfield Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Paul WALKER, Greg CROGAN, Todd DOWNING, Billy Joe YOUNG
Jr., Cordell and Robert ROSE, Robert GREEN and James CENTER. Honorary pallbearers
were Sam, Joshua and David DEERINWATER.
Letitia was born December 8, 1977 at Tahlequah, Okla., the daughter of Billy
Joe YOUNG and Teresa LOWERY, and she passed from this life on July 2, 1999,
in Cherokee County, Okla.
Letitia attended Tahlequah High School. On June 5, 1994 she married Sam
DEERINWATER. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by her parents; her husband; two sons, Joshua and David;
one brother, Billy Joe Jr.; two sisters, Jessica and Tina, all of Okla.
HIDER
Funeral services for Ida Adeline HIDER, 68, of Kansas, Okla., were held August
2, with Lawrence GREGORY officiating. Burial was in the Blue Springs Cemetery
under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Herschel and Gordon CLINTON, Norman SMITH, Jamie, Ricky
and Tracy THOMPSON.
Mrs. HIDER was born in Cherokee County, the daughter of Audie Lee and Helen
Rachel MCCLAIN THOMPSON, and she passed from this life July 29, 1999 at Siloam
Springs, Ark.
She attended Oaks and Teresita schools and then attended Northeastern State
University where she received her Masters degree in Education. On March 28,
1951, she married Francis L. HIDER.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Adrion A. HIDER.
Survivors include two daughters, Audie of Texas, and Amber of Okla.; three
brothers, Douglas, Jimmy and Maxie of Okla.; two sisters, Gladys and Mary
of Okla.; and three grandchildren, Adam, Rebecca and Adrian of Okla.
RIDGE
Funeral services for Helen RIDGE, 78, of Tahlequah, were held May 28, at
Reed-Culver Funeral Chapel with Rev. James DAUGHERTY officiating. Burial
was in the Barber Cemetery under direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of
Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Benny BUSH, Simon PASCALE, Johnny, Mike and Troy HOLMES,
Dominic ROLLICE, Mike WELCH and Brian FIELDS. Honorary pallbearers were Moe
DAVIS, Joe DEERINGWATER, Jose OLVERA, Gary and Kenny HOLMES and Enoch
ZAMAYOA.
Mrs. RIDGE was born January 12, 1921, one of twelve children to Pidgeon Sr.
and Bertha RATTLINGOURD HOLMES, and she passed from this life May 25, 1999
at W.W. Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah.
She attended school at Barber. In 1942, Helen married Watie RIDGE, Sr. at
Barber Community and together they made their home and raised nine children
there. Helen was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church.
Mrs. RIDGE was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Jess
and Leslie RIDGE; two brothers, Jim and Ned HOLMES; and three sisters, Sarah
and Virgie HOLMES and Cindy BRACKETT.
Survivors include five sons, Watie Mr., Larry, Charles, Eddie and Tim; two
daughters, Gennanna and Norma; four brothers, Henry, Pidgeon, Dave and Virgil;
two sisters, Mary and Lucille; twelve grandchildren and eleven great
grandchildren.
TRICE
Funeral services for Edward TRICE, 58, of Vinita, Okla., were held May 25,
at the First Christian Church of Vinita with Rev. Jim CAREY and Rev. Claude
STRONG officiating. Burial was in the Scott Cemetery under the direction
of Burckhalter Funeral Home of Vinita.
Pallbearers were members of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Honor Guard. Honorary
pallbearers were James GRAY, Gormand DAVIS, Jerry LAWHORNE, Jim RHINE, George
RAPER, Frank EVERETT, David PICKUP, Rick GREEN, Greg EVANS, J.D. BALDRIDGE,
Tony BENTON, Charlie ENYART, Chris FORREST, Reed FELTS, Lance SPARKS, Jamie
HOTHOUSE, Troy SANGER, Shawn BOHANNAN, Greg CLANTON, Darrin VALLARREAL, Jack
BRADLEY, Mike STONE, Doug CHARLES, Joe JOHNSTON, Jeff TURTLE, Jerry LONG,
Joe BYRD, Mike BURNSHURE, J.C. COOMBES, Billy DAVIS, Charlie SIX, Matt SMITH
and Ron COX.
Mr. TRICE was born March 4, 1941, in Pryor, the son of John E. and Tempa
WICKLIFFE TRICE and he passed from this life May 22, 1999 at his home in
Vinita.
He graduated from Ketchum High School in 1949 and attended Northeastern Oklahoma
College where he received an associate degree and then to Oklahoma University
where he received a degree in Law Enforcement. He served in the United States
Army in 1963, and worked for the Carpenter's Union in Tulsa, before joining
the Oklahoma State Highway Patrol, retiring after 29 years of service. He
was a member of the Oklahoma State Trooper Association and was of the Baptist
faith.
Mr. TRICE was united in marriage to Faye DUNCAN, August 20, 1967 at White
Oak.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife; one
daughter, Lisa; one son, Eddie; three sisters, Saddie, Georgia and Jean;
two aunts, Sarah and Erskin "Babe."
JOHNSON
Funeral services for Elsie Marie JOHNSON, 72, of Kansas, Okla., were held
June 7, at Twin Oaks Baptist Church with Rev. Bridge CHUCKLUCK and Rev. Edward
PETERS officiating. Burial was in the Long Prairie Cemetery under the direction
of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Derrick CAMPOS, Farrell and Joshua BILLY, William and James
ODLE, Leon FOREMAN and John JOHNSON. Honorary pallbearers were Odie, Caleb,
Cameron, Henry Jr. and Dustin JOHNSON.
Mrs. JOHNSON was born March 31, 1927, at Chewey, Okla., the daughter of Pete
and Jenny TEEHEE VANN, and she passed from this life on June 3, 1999 at Siloam
Springs Memorial Hospital.
She attended school in the Chewey District. Upon leaving school, she married
Ellis JOHNSON. She loved to sing gospel music with the Cherokee Choir and
was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. JOHNSON was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Everett JOHNSON;
one daughter, Linda SOLDIER; one brother, Chester SWAKE; and one sister Marjarine
WOLFE.
Survivors include three daughters, Angie, Priscilla and Linda; one stepson,
Leonard; three adopted daughters, Lavenda, Revonda and Jackie; four adopted
sons, Irwin, Joseph, Christopher and John, all of Okla.
FREEMAN
Funeral services for Jeff E. FREEMAN, 86, of Muskogee, were held June 21
at the Reed-Culver Funeral Chapel with Dr. Lloyd COPPEDGE and Mr. David
DIFFENBAUGH, officiating. Burial was in the Tahlequah City Cemetery under
the direction of the Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were the Deacons from the South College Church of Christ.
Mr. FREEMAN was born june 21, 1912, in Qualls, Okla., the son of George and
Lonnie Mae MCDONALD FREEMAN and he died June 17, 1999 at Broadway Manor.
He grew up in Cherokee County and attended in area schools. Mr. FREEMAN worked
for the City of Tahlequah for many years and helped with the maintenance
around Reed-Culver Funeral Home On August 3, 1974, he married Jessie Mae
HAMM in Tahlequah. He retired August 1, 1979.
Mr. FREEMAN was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Jack, Walter,
Bill, Levi and Perry FREEMAN; two sisters, Sara REDFERN and Pily SHINN.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Kay of Okla. and Dorothy
of La.; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Joe of
Okla.; two sisters Emma of Colo., and Virgie of Okla.
KEYS
Funeral services for Malinda Gertrude GROUNDHOG KEYS, 88, of Stilwell, were
held June 23, at Reed-Culver Chapel, with Rev. Jess FRENCH and Rev. Dale
WILSON officiating. Burial was in the Ross Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tracy GLORY, Sam BARDELL, Tommy BRANNON, Andy, John R. and
Dickie SELLERS. Honorary pallbearers were Bill NEWTON, Bill WALLS, Tom SPEARS,
Junior HENDRIX, W.I. and L.A. CRAIG.
Mrs. KEYS was born June 14, 1911 at Stilwell, Okla., the daughters of Joe
L. and Nancy GRITTS GROUNDHOG, and she passed from this life on June 20,
1999 at Tulsa, Okla.
She attended Stilwell Schools and Sequoyah Training School. She married Alfred
"Cunnie" KEYS in Welling. As a homemaker, Malinda enjoyed quilting and sewing.
She was very active at the V.F.W. Auxiliary #3707, the American Legion Auxiliary
#135 and the Hastings Hospital Auxiliary. She was a former Sunday School
Teacher at Eldon Baptist Church and along time member there.
Mrs. KEYS was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Jimmy
R. "Rusty" KEYS; one brother, George GROUNDHOG; one sister, Mary SELLERS;
and one grandson, Darrell KEYS.
Survivors include four daughters, Naomi, Fannie, Julia and Charlene of Okla.;
two sons, C.B. of Colo., and Jack of Ariz; one brother, Dennis of Texas;
seven grandchildren, Nancy of Md., Dennis and Cindy, James and John of Okla.,
Louis of Penn., Kenny of Ariz., and Jackie of Ill.; and three great
grandchildren, Lindsey, Tyler and Jodi.
SPEARS
Graveside services for Homer B. SPEARS, 75, of Hulbert, Okla., were held
June 27, in Old Spears-Neugin Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral
Home of Tahlequah.
Homer Bill SPEARS was born October 6, 1923 in Hulbert, Okla., the son of
Charley Barker and Lillie Myrtle JOHNSON SPEARS, and he departed from this
life on June 24, 1999 in Tahlequah, Okla.
Homer served in Europe during World War 11 and was wounded by gunfire when
a bullet grazed his skill and thigh. He was honorably discharged on March
12, 1946. Homer was a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was married to Clara B. HAYES who preceded him in death. Also preceeding
him in death were his parents; infant sister, Edith; and two infant daughters,
Margie and Elaine.
Survivors include his son, Ernie; his daughter Elda; one brother, Lester,
all of Okla.; two sisters Allene of Okla. and Arlene of Fla.; three
grandchildren, Katrina, Mark and Lee; and three great grandchildren.
HOLLOWAY
George Eugene HOLLOWAY, son of William Lafayette and Julia Lucinda MCLEMORE
HOLLOWAY, was born September 17, 1917 at Lyons Switch, Okla., and departed
this life December 5, 1998 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., at the
age of 81 years.
George was married to Idell TISHER at Los Animas, Colo., in 1947. He was
a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a resident of Tahlequah for the past 26
years.
He is survived by his wife, Idell of the home; two sons, Robert of Okla.,and
Bill of Ark.; one daughter, Brenda of Okla.; two brothers, Kenneth and Barney
of Okla.; six sisters, Virginia of Neb., Imogene, Christine and Dottie of
Okla., Vera of Ark., and Modena of Ga.; eight grandchildren and nine great
grandchildren.
