WOLFE
Graveside services for Reece WOLFE, 88, of Oaks, were held July 19, at Hogan
Cemetery, Locust Grove, Okla., with Rev. Don MARSHALL officiating.
Pallbearers were his nephews, Alton MANN, Jim LAMPKINS, Tommy Rae DAVIS,
Dane PIERCE, Perry WOLFE and Thomas Reece NOE.
Mr. WOLFE was born near Chewey, the son of John and Dora MITCHELL WOLFE.
He attended school at Oaks. He was a farmer and during W.W.11 he worked at
the Dupont Powder Plant. He married Maude Lee ROBINSON in the late 1930s.
They moved to California after W.W.11 and he worked as foreman at Tejon Ranch
in Lebec, Calif. After retiring in the early 1970s, he returned to Oaks.
He was responsible for starting the Chewey Cemetery Trust for preservation
and maintenance of the Chewey Cemetery. Many hours were donated helping the
Oaks Indian Center and the Ebenezer Lutheran Church and other community
affairs.
Mr. WOLFE was preceded in death by his wife Maude Lee, his parents and sisters,
Silvia, Jessie, Agnes and Marybelle. Survivors include one brother, Thomas;
and five sisters, Janie, Hattie, Anna Marie, Dolly and Nettie, all of Okla.
SECONDINE
Funeral services for Leona May DAUGHERTY SECONDINE, 88, of Vinita, Okla.,
were held August 15, at Emmanuel Temple with Rev. Bruce BUTLER and Don
GREENFEATHER officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of
Burckhalter Funeral Home of Vinita.
Pallbearers were Chris WHITE, Kep PRESTON, Paul PRESTON, Robert PETERSON,
Mike STAUBUS and Bryce SECONDINE, grandsons of Leona.
Leona was born June 16 at White Oak, Okla., the daughter of George "Guy"
and Cora CARPENTER DAUGHERTY, and she died August 12, 1998, at her residence
at Heartsworth House in Vinita.
She married Delaware "Scott" SECONDINE and lived in the White Oak area until
moving to Vinita in 1963.
Leona operated Peter Pan Nursery in her home, caring for many children who
today are Vinita's young adults and affectionately knew her as "Grandma".
Leona was a member of the Shawnee Indian Tribe and was one of the very
few elders who spoke the Shawnee language. Approximately two years ago, she
and other elders of the tribe, together with a linguist from Kansas university,
put together tapes of the language and pictionary in order to offer lessons
to tribal members.
Leona was a member of Emmanuel Temple Church and dearly loved her church
family. She also was a member of the Christian Singles Group.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Scott; a daughter, Revena PRESTON
and a great grandson, Todd PITCHER. Survivors include two sons, Howard and
Scott; one daughter, Shirley; 12 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.
PROCTOR
Funeral services for Kimberly Ann "Punkin" PROCTOR, 24 of Tahlequah, were
held August 14, at Brush Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Larry PRITCHETT and
Rev. Mariano ALVARADO officiating. Burial was in the Roundsprings Cemetery
under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Gene DANIEL, Sequoyah PRITCHETT, Yahola TIGER, Sam HORSECHIEF,
Ned FLYNN and Jerome FACTOR. Honorary pallbearers were Jim BERRYHILL, Tarpie
YARGEE, DeWayne MCCARTER and Michael TIGER.
Ms. PROCTOR was born October 8, 1973, in Claremore, Okla., the daughter of
Janis PROCTOR STINNET and she died August 10, 1998, in Tahlequah. Ms. PROCTOR
attended Jay and Westville elementary schools, and Sequoyah High School for
three years, graduating in 1991. Kimberly attended Northeastern State
University from the fall of 1995 to the present, majoring in human resources
development. In 1997 she was a contestant for the Miss Cherokee. She was
a member of the Native American Student Association and was the chairperson
for the N.S.U., N.A.S.A. mentoring program.
Ms. PROCTOR is survived by one son, Thomas Zane of the home; her mother and
father, Janis and Mark; two brothers Shaun and Jason; one aunt, Julie; one
uncle Marvin; and a very special friend Rodrigo, all of Okla.
TRICE
Funeral services for Tempa TRICE, 87, of Langley, Okla., were held August
24, at the First Baptist Church of Langley with Rev. Justin TURNER officiating.
Burial was in the Spavinaw Cemetery under the direction of Burckhalter Funeral
Home of Vinita.
Pallbearers were Richard LIPE, Calvin GRAY, Chuck HUDSON, Paul KNIGHT, Gary
SUTTON and Clint BLAHA.
She was born March 7, 1911, in old Spavinaw, Okla., the daughter of Tom and
Hattie TIGER WICKLIFFE Sr., and she died August 21, 1998, in Vinita. Tempa
was married to John E. TRICE on January 31, 1933, in Vinita. He preceded
her in death in 1943.
Tempa was a homemaker, a long time member of the First Baptist Church of
Disney and a proud member of the Cherokee Nation.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers Tom WICKLIFFE
and Claud WICKLIFFE; three sisters, Mary PRUITT, Eunice FINNELL and Mae THOMPSON.
Survivors include three daughters, Saddle, Gorgia and Jean; one son, Ed;
two sisters, Sarah and Babe all of Okla.; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-seven
great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.
HOLCOMB
Funeral services for Richard Ray HOLCOMB, 58, of Vian, were held August 24,
at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Crosslin SMITH and Rev. Virgil HOLCOMB
officiating. Burial was in the Caney Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver
Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Dewey CATRON, Ronnie GOFF, Leroy WEBBER, Richard DIRTSELLER,
Larry WEBBER and Joe SMITH. Honorary pallbearers were Lamond WEESE and Timothy
D. WEESE.
Mr. HOLCOMB was born December 25, 1939, in Welling, Okla., the son of Johnson
Richard and Eliza PIGEON HOLCOMB, and he died August 21, 1998 in Vian.
Mr. HOLCOMB attended Caney schools. He belonged to the Keetoowah Band and
the Stokes Smith Memorial Grounds.
Mr. HOLCOMB was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jeff HOLCOMB;
and one son Dale Ray HOLCOMB. Survivors include two sons, Ray Dean and Darrell
Don; three daughters, Sarah Jean, Rita Jo and Denisa Gail; four brothers,
Charley, Henry, Oly and Joe; three sisters, Betty, Mamie and Annie, all of
Okla.; and 8 grandchildren.
CAREY
Funeral services for Hester HENSON CAREY, 90, of Hulbert, were held August
27, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Jimmy CAREY officiating. Burial
was in the Keener Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Robert HENSON, Luther HENSON, Ronald HENSON, Ed HENSON,
Richard KEENER and Johnny KEENER. Honorary pallbearers were Don HENSON, Jim
Bob HENSON, and Waitie HENSON.
Hester was born May 13, 1908, in Cherokee County, near Hulbert, Okla., the
daughter of Richard and Caroline WELCH HENSON, and she died August 24,
1998.
Hester was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Hulbert and attended Wyandotte
school until the sixth grade. Hester was 15/16 Cherokee and proud of her
heritage. We will remember her sitting on her front porch and smiling whenever
a little one came to visit. She lived her entire life loving and serving
others.
Mrs. CAREY was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Madison CAREY;
two daughters, Georgia and Katie; one son, John Henry; three brothers, Major,
Jim and Rufus HENSON; one sister, Linnie KEENER; three nephews, J.B. KEENER.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy of the home; a nephew, Chester of the home;
one brother, Mose; six grandchildren, Carla, Jimmy Carl, Amy, Amanda Kay,
Candice and Bonita; and two great grandchildren, Madison and Serena, all
of Okla.
HARMON
Memorial services for Floy DUFFIELD HARMON, 81, of Benton City, Wash., were
held June 26, at the Methodist Church in Benton City.
Mrs. HARMON was born in 1916, in Teresita, Okla., the daughter of George
and Louella KINGFISHER DUFFIELD, and she died June 21, 1998.
After graduating from Chilocco Indian School in 1934, she moved to Tulsa,
Okla., where she met and married Frank M. HARMON in 1939. In 1943 they moved
to Richland, Wash., where they made many lifelong friends from Warren Court.
Later they moved to Benton City, where they lived for the next 43 years.
As a business owner she operated gas stations, the Ki-Be Theatre and Inn,
and the Green Acres Trailer Park. She was dedicated to the community and
very active in civic organizations, working elections, attending school board
and city council meetings. She opened her heart, becoming "Ma Harmon" to
many boys who needed a temporary home.
Mrs. HARMON was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roy DUFFIELD;
and one sister, Nancy DUFFIELD. Survivors include her loving family; husband,
Frank; three sons, Richard, George and Jerry, all of Wash.; two daughters
Patricia of N.C., and Pamela of N.M.; nieces, Sue and Karlene, both of Calif.;
granchildren, Gaylyn, Tamy, Gregory, Tracy and Jeff, all of Wash., and Delaney
of Okla.; and great grandchildren, Nicole, Alex, Jeston and Jake, all of
Wash.
STRAIT
Dorothy STRAIT, 63, of Apache Junction, Ariz., died June 26, 1998. Mrs. STRAIT
was a nationally known Southwest Indian artist. She taught art at the Apache
Junction campus of Central Arizona College, and at local art galleries and
studios. Mrs. STRAIT was born in Phoenix and moved to Apache Junction in
1988.
Dorothy's past runs deep. Dorothy's great great grandfather traveling the
Cherokee's Trail of Tears. Her father was assiged a roll number. He was born
in Oklahoma before it became a state, near what is now Stilwell. As a young
man, he came to Arizona and met and married Dorothy's mother, who is also
part Cherokee.
Dorothy grew up in a country atmosphere on the edge of Phoenix. It was there
she began her artwork. When Dorothy was seven, she observed her mother's
work in watercolor and woodcarving. she painted along with her mother, learning
basic watercolor techniques which she later employed as the basis of her
work. Her formal study included seven years of protraiture as well as two
years working on impressionlist and abstract painting.
Survivors include her husband Virgil; son, Thad; mother, Mattie; sisters,
Shirley and Helen; brothers Jack, Bobby Joe and Donald; and two grandchildren.
COOK
Robert Clay COOK, 49, died April 21. 1998, at his home in Fresno, Calif.
COOK was a Native American and a member of the Cherokee Tribe. He was a grandson
of the late Emmitt and Linnie OWENS of Wauhillau, Okla., and Jess and Daisy
COOK of Altus, Okla.
COOK is survived by his wife Sandy of the home; a son, Ryan of Ark.; a daughter,
Dana of Calif.; five grandchildren, Chayce Christian, Drayven Dane and Lundyn,
all of Ark., and Zayne and Eveaux of Calif.; parents, Robert and Vera of
Calif.; a brother Rod of Calif.; a sister, Connie of Ariz.; a niece, Danell;
and a nephew, Mica, both of Ariz.; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who
loved him.
CRAWFORD
Funeral services for Robert Lee CRAWFORD Jr., 46, of Tahlequah, were held
September 1, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Dale WILSON officiating. Burial
was in the Tahlequah City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Don CRAWFORD, Jackie CRAWFORD, Shawn CRAWFORD, Damon ALLEN,
Gary GIBSON and Butch PARNELL. Honorary pallbearers were the Phi Lambda Chi
Faternity.
Bob CRAWFORD was born October 19, 1951 in Tahlequah, Okla., the son of Robert
Lee Sr. and Dorothy GUESS CRAWFORD, and he died August 28, 1998. Bob graduated
from Northeastern State University and was a member of Phi Lambda Chi faternity.
He was employed at W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his father on May 23, 1991.
Survivors include his mother, Dorothy; two daughters, April Leigh and Cara
Lynn, both of Okla.; one sister, Roberta Clinton; and one nephew, Buddy,
both of Texas.
WATERMELON
Funeral services for Minnie WATERMELON, 75, were held September 11, in the
Piney Baptist Church. Burial was in the Jumper Cemetery under the direction
of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home of Jay.
Minnie was born July 23, 1923, in Kansas, Okla., the daughter of Samuel and
Lizzie YOUNGBIRD DAVIS, and she died September 8, 1998, in the Grove General
Hospital.
Mrs. WATERMELON married Ned WATERMELON and he preceded her in death on December
20, 1994. Minnie lived all her life in Delaware County. She was a full-blood
member of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the Piney Baptist Church.
Minnie was preceded in death by her husband, Ned.
Survivors include four daughters, Ella, Billie Jean, Lorene and Pamela; two
sisters, Lillie and Lottie; two brothers, Quinton and Charley, all of Okla.;
six grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
ROSS
Funeral services for Polly ROSS, 83, of Stilwell, were held September 1,
at the New Baptist Church in Greasy with Rev. Larry PRITCHETT and Rev. Ted
QUALLS officiating. Burial was in the Belfonte Cemetery under the direction
of Reed-Culver Funeral home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were James BYRD, Johnny VANN, Jody VANN, Corneulis VANN, Martin
VANN, Jimmy VANN, Watie VANN, Perry BRYD and Albert ROSS. Honorary
pallbearers were Leonard DUNCAN and Rainwater KIMBLE. Flower girls were Angela
GONZALES, Luck KETCHER, Sisis CHERRY, Amy HOPPER and Georgina PRITCHETT.
Mrs. ROSS was born July 26, 1915, in Sequoyah County, Okla., the daughter
of James W. and Lila HARDBERGER VANN, and she died August 28, 1998, in Ft.
Smith, Ark.
Mrs. ROSS enjoyed gardening and quilting. Polly was a member of the New Baptist
Church.
Mrs. ROSS was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank ROSS in
1975; one daughter; three brothers, Isaac VANN, Arceum VANN and Bill VANN;
three sisters, Jenny HOTHOUSE, Lizzie VANN and Sifroida GLASS; and one
half-brother, John BYRD.
Survivors include three sons, William and Charlie, both of Okla., and Johnson
of Ark.; five daughters, Juanita, Lillie, Susie, Frances and Linda, all of
Okla.; two brothers, Wilson and Johnson, both of Okla.; 34 grandchildren;
and many great and great great grandchildren.
WILLYARD
Funeral services for Johnnie Estle WILLYARD, 70, of Pryor were held at the
First Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Richard CALLISON officiating. Burial
was in the Fairview Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Don JORDAN, Steve PROCTOR, Jack ERWIN, Tony SMITH, Ronnie
SHARP and Jackie ODLE. Honorary pallbearers were John BOWLES, Ron YOUNG,
Clarence ODLE, Wayne MCLAUGHLIN, Willie MCLAUGHLIN, Raymond MCLAUGHLIN and
Marvin MCLAUGHLIN.
Mr. WILLYARD was born January 14, 1928, in Adair, the son of Arthur and Mamie
Pauline WILLYARD, and he died August 16, 1998, at his daughter's home.
He married Minnie Mae MOODY on June 28, 1947 in Las Vegas, Nev. She preceded
him in death in 1994. He retired from Georgia-Pacific Co., as a paper maker
in 1992 as a 30 year employee. Mr. WILLYARD was a great sportsman and an
avid hunter and fisherman, and was known as one of the best softball pitchers
in the area.
He was a long time member of the Westside Free Will Baptist Church, and also
a member of the Elks Lodge, Sertoma, National Rifle Association, Wa-Ro-Ma
and Moose Lodge.
Mr. WILLYARD was preceded in death by his wife; brother, Jesse; and sisters,
Lois MURNIE and Lillian. Survivors include his daughter, Delois; son, Johnnie;
granddaughter, Kimberly; grandsons, Rodney and James; three great grandchildren,
Nikki, Maggie and Mickayla; brother, Bill; sister, Rosie; and godson, Oliver,
all of Okla.
WILLYARD
Funeral services for Mamie Pauline HATFIELD WILLYARD, 92, of Pryor, were
held August 29, in the Westside Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Boyd ALLEN
and Rev. Richard CALLISON officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery
under the direction of Wilson Cunningham Funeral Home.
Mrs. WILLYARD was born April 29, 1892, in Cleborn, Texas, and died August
27, in Pryor.
Mrs. WILLYARD was a housewife and mother and a member of the Westside Free
Will Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Author WILLYARD; her son Jesse
WILLYARD; and three daughters, Lois ODLE ROWBOTHAM, Lillian RICE and Murnie
WILLYARD.
Survivors include two sons, William and Estle; two daughters, Letha and Rosa;
one sister Ella, all of Okla.; 25 grandchildren; 57 great grandchildren;
31 great great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 16 great step-grandchildren;
and 16 great great step-grandchildren.
WILLYARD
Funeral services for Minnie Mae MOODY WILLYARD, 62, of Pryor were held at
the Westside Freewill Baptist Church in Pryor with Rev. Richard CALLISON
and Tommy TIMS officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetey under the
direction of Jim Green Funeral Home of Pryor.
Mrs. WILLYARD was born March 14, 1932, in Lamar, Ark., the daughter of Ralph
MOODY and Effie Leona MCDONALD, and she died November 11, 1994. She was married
to Johnnie Estle WILLYARD and was a Pryor resident. She was a member of the
Westside Freewill Baptist Church and Pryor Elks Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Effie Leona BOWLES; her father,
Ralph MOODY; and grandmother, Delia Adeline MCDONALD.
Survivors include her husband, Johnnie "Sausage" WILLYARD of the home; one
daughter, Deloris; one son, Johnnie; two grandsons, Rodney and James; one
granddaughter, Kimberly; one brother, Johnny; one aunt, Mary, all of Okla;
and one uncle Johnny of New Nexico.
BRICHACEK
Graveside services were held for Corda BRICHACEK, 71, of Drumright, Okla.,
at the Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Woody MCCLENDON officiating. Funeral
arrangements were under the direction of Don Smith Funeral Home.
Corda BRICHACEK was born September 23, 1926, in Gans, Okla., the daughter
of Elmer and Betty CROSLIN GOULD, and she died November 25, 1997. Corda and
her husband, Elmer, were united in marriage in 1954 at the Chruch of God
in Drumright, Okla., and had made their home in Drumright for the past 24
years.
Corda was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one sister.
Survivors include her husband Elmer, of the home; one sister, Ruby and several
nieces and nephews.
GLEASON
Services for Kemper L. GLEASON, 80, of Star Harbor, Texas, were held in the
sanctuary of St. Mary Catholic Church in Barnsdall with Rev. KING officiating.
Entombment was in the Ethel Reese Cemetery under the direction of Arnold
Moore-Barnsdall Funeral Service.
GLEASON was born January 14, 1918, in Avant, the son of Frank and Mary COIN
GLEASON, and he died in Athens, Texas. He enlisted in the United States Army
during W.W.11 in 1945 and he received his honorable discharge in 1946 as
a corporal. GLEASON was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Barnsdall,
the Barnsdall Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 4769, the Athens Lions Club,
P.E.A. Pickers Square Dance Club and the Elks Lodge in Elk City.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline; two sons, Kemper and Michael, both of
Texas; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
SUMMERFIELD
Wesley SUMMERFIELD Sr., 74, died August 14, 1998, at his home in Ukiah, Calif.,
after a long illness. He was a member of the Cherokee Nation.
He was born July 17, 1924, near Jay, Okla., and attended Jay High School
before moving to California in the early 1940s.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of the home; three sons, Wesley, Larry
and Nick, all of Calif.; daughter, Tippi also of Calif.; two brothers, Drake
and Houston, both of Okla.; a sister, Ruth of Okla.; nine grandchildren and
two great grandchildren, all who live in the northern California area.
ELLER
Funeral services for Clemmie FISHER ELLER, 85, of Pryor, Okla., were held
September 18, in the Moore Memory Chapel. Burial was in the Fairview
Cemetery.
Mrs. ELLER was born January 31, 1913, in Mazie, Okla., the daughter of Isaac
"Ike" FISHER and Maggie DOWNING FISHER CURTIE, and she died September 15,
1998, in Pryor.
She attended Concho and Chilocco Indian Schools. She was of the Cherokee
heritage and baptized at the North Canadian River Baptist Church.
Mrs. ELLER loved to sing and play the piano. She has resided in Pryor and
Tulsa since the 1950s. She worked in the laundry and cleaning business and
also in upholstery.
She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lillian FISHER WATSON
and Lulla Virginia FISHER DIAL; two brothers, Joseph FISHER and Wiley
FISHER.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald of Penn., and Charles of Ark.; two sisters,
Lelia and Mary, both of Okla.; eight grandchildren, Farrell, Joyce, Robin
and Sally Ann, all of Okla., Kimberly and Sharon of Calif., Tanya of Vir.,
and Lillian of Maine.
FOLSUM
Funeral services for Malcom Brent FOLSUM, 47, of Tahlequah, were held September
23, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Gover JAMES and Rev. Randall CUMMINGS
officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Pallbearers were William GREGORY, Jason ROSS, Buddy COOPER, Gerald WYCHE,
Charles WATSON, Robert WATSON, Jeff SALAZAR and Jeff SCOTT. Honorary
pallbearers were Olan DURANT Jr., Richard FOLSUM, Thomas BILLY, Gerald TIGER,
John W. HAMILTON and Edward OLD BEAR Jr.
Malcom "Bobby" FOLSUM was born October 12, 1950, in Atoka, Okla., the son
of Woodrow and Louise LEFLORE FOLSUM, and he died September 19, 1998, in
Tulsa. Mr. FOLSUM spent most of his time in Atoka, Okla., attending Harmony
schools, Carter Seminary in Ardmore, and Atoke High School.
Malcom married Juanita TIGER on December 7, 1972, in Claremore, Okla. He
joined the National Guards in 1973-1974 and was stationed in Ft. Polk, Louisiana.
Malcom and Juanita spent twenty-five years together. They moved to
Stilwell, Okla. in 1983, then to Tahlequah in 1994. He worked as a Certified
Nurse Orderly until his illness worsened.
Mr. FOLSUM is survived by his wife, Juanita of the home; one son, John; three
daughters, Paula, Bobbi Jo and Thersa Ann, all of Okla.; three granddaughters,
Bethany Jo, Amy and Helen, all of Okla.; four sisters, Melinda, Hazel and
Anna James, all of Okla., and Joyce of Ariz.; and two brothers, Richard and
Olan, both of Okla.

SANDERS
Graveside services for Charles Sam SANDERS, 51, of Stilwell, were held September
22, at Cherry Tree Cemetery with Rev. Sam NAKEDHEAD officiating and under
the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Charley HOLCOMB, Henry HOLCOMB, Oly HOLCOMB, Joe HOLCOMB,
Jimbo FEATHERS and Tom MOST. Honorary pallbearers were Rick PIGEON, Roger
PIGEON and Randy FEATHERS.
Mr. SANDERS was born January 10, 1947, in Stilwell, Okla., the son of Frank
and Fannie SCRAPER SANDERS, and he died September 19, 1998, in Tulsa.
Mr. SANDERS attended Cave Springs schools. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Nellie SANDERS FEATHERS.
Survivors include one sister, Hazel and one niece, Nina, both of Okla.; one
great niece; two great nephews; and one great great nephew.
MCCOY
Funeral services for Milton "Pete" MCCOY, 79 of Cookson, were held September
29, at Dry Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Alex RYDER officiating. Burial
was in the Bolyn Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home
of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Mike MCCOY, Bobby MCCOY, Billy MCCOY, Jackey MCCOY, Harvey
JOHNSON and Christopher FOURKILLER. Honorary pallbearers were Johnny BOLYN,
Dean BOLYN and Norman FLUTE. Flower girls were his granddaughters.
Mr. MCCOY was born April 2, 1919, in Marble City, Okla., the son of Sam Alex
and Martha BOLYN GLORY MCCOY, and he died September 26, 1998, in Tulsa.
Pete, as he was better known to most people, was a farmer in his younger
days. In Cookson, he worked at the General Store for Geo and Ellen STRATTON
until they sold out.
Mr. MCCCOY was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Henry GLORY;
one sister, Allene HOMES; one sister-in-law, Imogene GLORY; and one grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Susie, of the home; two sons, Charly and Sam;
two daughters, Ida and Norma; two half-brothers, Alex and George; three
half-sisters, Geneva, Tensie and Joyce; one brother-in-law, Henry, all of
Okla.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren.
BELK
Funeral services for Pauline Eleanor STOPP BELK, 65, of Tahlequah, were held
September 23, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Sam KEENER officiating. Burial
was in the Ballew Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jack CAREY, Roy CAREY, Randy CAREY, Darrell CAREY, Buck
CHRISTIE, and Key WELCH. Honorary pallbearers were Mose HENSON, Don HENSON,
Barney MANES, Carl "Buddy" DILL and John ERMAN.
Mrs. BELK was born March 21, 1933, in Yonkers, Okla., the daughter of Cornelius
Downing and Sallie BIGFEATHER TREASURE, and she died September 20, 1998,
in Tahlequah.
Mrs. BELK graduated from Hulbert High School and received a nursing degree
from Muskogee Vo-Tech. She was a member of the Keener Baptist Church.
Mrs. BELK was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Donald Allen
STOPP.
Survivors include four sons, Harold of Kansas, Billy Joe of Missouri, Kenneth
and Aaron, both of Okla.; two daughters, Cheryl and Karen, both of Okla.;
one brother Walter of Okla.; one sister, Cora, of Okla.; 12 grandchildren;
and 4 great grandchildren.
WILLIS
Funeral services for Mizzie WILLIS, 66, of Tahlequah, were held September
30, at Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Gil HOOPER officiating. Burial was in
the Greenleaf Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lincoln WILLIS, Vernon WILLIS, Vincent WILLIS, Bill MEEKS,
Andrew WASHINGTON and Whitewater WASHINGTON.
Mrs. WILLIS was born July 22, 1932, in Tahlequah, Okla., the daughter of
Blue and Lizzie WHITEWATER WASHINGTON, and she died September 28, 1998, in
Tahlequah.
Mrs. WILLIS attended Sequoyah Schools. Mizzie married Emmitt WILLIS around
1950 in Tahlequah. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. WILLIS was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Howard WILLIS.
Survivors include her husband, Emmitt, of the home; three sons, Bob, Vernon
and Lincoln; three daughters, Doris, Deloris and Lenora; two brothers, Whitewater
and Andrew, all of Okla.; and 12 grandchildren.
STUDIE
Funeral services for Rider Wayne STUDIE, 39, of Jay, Okla., were held September
25, in the First Baptist Church in Jay with Rev. Richard PICKUP and Rev.
Chuck GLASS officiating. Burial was in the Jumper Cemetery under the direction
of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home of Jay.
Rider was born on November 18, 1948 in Grove, Okla., the son of William STUDIE
and Lucy HAIR STUDIE, and he died September 21, 1998, at Gravette Medical
Center, in Gravette, Ark.
Rider has worked as a Child Welfare Case Worker for the Cherokee Nation.
He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include two children, Shannon of Missouri and Dustin of Okla.;
two sisters, Wilma and Marilyn, both of Okla.; and two brothers, Joe and
Robert, both of Okla.
MUIR
Services for Matthew J. MUIR, 19, were held in September, 1998 and burial
was in Rockville, Maryland.
Matthew was preceded in death by his father, Edward J. MUIR and grandmother
Virginia WELLS, Welling, Okla. Survivors include mother, Mary; one daughter,
Cherokee; two brothers, Edward and Mark; one sister, Michele; grandmother,
Patricia of Washington, D.C.; grandfather, James of Okla.; aunts, Ruby, Viola
and Patty; and uncle Arthur.
TEHEE
Services for Johnny J. "Bean" TEHEE, 56, of Colcord, Okla., were held October
17 at the Old Kansas Gym. Burial was in the Clouds Creek Cemetery under the
direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home of Jay.
Mr. TEHEE was born August 31, 1942, in Delaware County, Okla., the son of
John and Frona CORNSHUCKER TEHEE, and he died October 14, 1998, at the Siloam
Springs Hospital.
Johnny was baptized at the age of 13 in the Old Clouds Creek Church where
he had attended. He was married to Louella GLASS on December 2, 1964, he
worked for the Cherokee Nation Natural Resources at the Bull Hollow Ranch
and Community building for nine years.
Mr. TEHEE was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Maggie BLACK and
a baby brother.
Survivors include, his wife, Louella of the home; three sons Dewayne, John
and Gary; four daughters Velma, Rhonda, Carla and Miranda; one sister, Dorothy;
two half-brothers, Turner and Norman, all of Okla.; and 14 grandchildren.
WALLS
Funeral services for Bernice WALLS, 52, of Tahlequah, were held October 29,
at Reed-Culver Chapel with Pastor Charlie CAREY officiating. Burial was in
the Keener Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home
of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were her brothers, Alfred WHITEKILLER, Alvin WHITEKILLER, Buffalo
WHITEKILLER, G.D. WHITEKILLER, Curtis WHITEKILLER and Calvin WHITEKILLER.
Honorary pallbearers were James B. TAYLOR, Danny TAYLOR, Billy MARSH and
Cody MARSH.
Mrs. WALLS was born August 3, 1946, in Hulbert, Okla., the daughter of Willie
and Linda GLASS WHITEKILLER and she died October 25, 1998, in Tahlequah.
Mrs. WALLS attended Hulbert schools. Bernice married John WALLS in 1966,
and to this union three sons were born. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist
Church.
Mrs. WALLS was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Virgil
WHITEKILLER.
Survivors include three sons, D. Kevin, John "Presley" and V. Matthew,
all of Okla.; six brothers, Alfred of Mo., Alvin of Kans., Buffalo, G.D.,
Curtis, and Calvin, all of Okla.; one sister, Louise of Okla.; five
grandchildren, John, Britney, Lindsay, Dillion, and Alyssa "Sady", all of
Okla.
ROWE
Funeral services for James ROWE, 55, of Peggs, Okla., were October 28, at
the Peggs Community Church with Pastor Rex HENDRICKSON, Mike PARRISH and
Lewis ROSS officiating. Burial was in the Little Rock Indian Cemetery under
the direction of Green Country Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Darryl LEWIS, John LEWIS, T.J. SCRAPPER, Jason Bear SIMON,
Richard Lee KETCHER 111, and Davy KETCHER. Honorary pallbearers were Jimson
BLUEBIRD, Larry SCRAPPER and Jeff ALLEN.
James was born March 12, 1943, in Claremore, Okla., the son of Felix and
Mary BACKWARD ROWE, and he died October 25, 1998, in Tulsa.
James grew up in Mayes County and was a graduate of Salina High School. He
served in the United States Army.
J.B. was preceded in death by his father in May 1943, his grandparents, Maggie
and Sampson BACKWARD.
Survivors include, his wife, Dona of the home; his mother Mary; his children
Ezra, Jerron, Jeanine, April Dawn and Joanna; two brothers, Richard and Eugene;
three sisters, Mary Ann, Helen and Evelyn; four uncles, Adam, Claude, Lacy
and Robert, all of Okla.; and nine grandchildren.
REAVIS
Funeral services for Toinette REAVIS, 62, of Tahlequah, were held October
27, at the Green Country Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Robert DEWOODY
officiating.
Toinette was born on July 28, 1936, in Claremore, Okla., the daughter of
Skake and Tommie Lou WOLFE HOGNER, and she died October 25, 1998.
Toinette was born and raised in the Rocky Mountain Area of Adair County,
Okla. She attended and graduated from Cave Springs High School and later
attended and graduated from Hillcrest Nursing School. She was a member of
Grace Baptist Church where she attended for many years.
Toinette was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include, her children; Jack, and his children, Ashley, Bayly, Maryah
and Madison; Sheryl, and her children Clint and Luke; Carol Sue, and
her children Joshua David and Jennifer Rachel, all of Okla.; Brenda Lee,
and her son Eastman Grady of Texas; Michael, and his children Zachary Michal
and Reed Dalton of Neb.; special friend, John REID 111 of Okla.; a brother,
Jerry of Okla.; and a sister, Jeanette of Calif.
KILPATRICK
Funeral services for Sarah Elizabeth CONRAD KILPATRICK, 83, were held October
28, at Reed-Culver Chapel. Burial was in the National Cemetery in Ft.
Gibson.
Sarah was born March 6, 1915, in Braggs, Okla., the daughter of George Benge
and Margaret A. GILSTRAP CONRAD, and she died October 23, 1998, in
Tahlequah.
Sarah attended Chilocco Indian School and was married to Howard KILPATRICK.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, where she served the babies and
toddlers in the nursery for 17 years, and of the American Legion Ladies
Auxiliary, Rhodes-Prichett Post #50 of Tahlequah.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, John, Albert
and Kenneth CONRAD.
Survivors include, her husband, Howard of the home; sons, Jeff of the home,
and Kenneth of Colo.; two daughters, Barbara and Kay, both of Okla.; a special
niece Gail; one brother, Hiawatha; two sisters, Lucille and Mary Kay, both
of Okla.; six grandchildren, Beth of Colo., Barbara of Calif., Josh, Scott,
and Bill, all of Okla., and Sarah of Ark.; and five great grandchildren,
Kyle, Ryan and Brittany of Colo., and Austri and Aunika of Calif.
SOAP
Funeral services for Nancy Jane WOLFE-SOAP, 91, of Stilwell, were held October
21, at the Mulberry Tree Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond GLASS and Rev.
Willis KNIGHT officiating. Burial was in the Mulberry Tree Cemetery under
the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Pallbearers were Greg WOLFE, Pernell VANN, Chris VANN, Kirk GRIGSBY, Weylin
WOLFE and Mark VANN. Honorary pallbearers were Joe LIVERS Herbert Dale WOLFE
and Frankie DUNCAN Jr.
Mrs. SOAP was born April 4, 1907 in Stilwell, Okla. (I.T.), the daughter
of Jack and Lillie SCOTT WOLFE and she died October 18, 1998 in Tahlequah.
Mrs. SOAP grew up in Stilwell and attended the Rabbit Trap School. She married
Walter Watt SOAP on March 28, 1927. Unto this union three sons and one daughter
were born. She was a member of the Mulberry Tree Baptist Church.
Mrs. SOAP was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; two
brothers, Albert and Robert WOLFE; and two sisters, Mollie and Mary Jane.
Survivors include, three sons, Henry of Ark., and Jimmie and Albert, both
of Okla.; one daughter, Narcie of Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great
grandchildren.
LEAF
Funeral services for William Leonard LEAF, 74, were held November 3, at the
Culbertson-Smith Mortuary in Wichita, Kansas. Burial was in the White Chapel
Cemetery.
William was born March 18, 1924 in Marble City, Okla., the son of Charley
and Julia Adeline Belle YOUNG LEAF, and died October 30, 1998 in Wichita,
Kansas.
Survivors include, his wife, Alma of the home; one son, Steve of Kansas;
one daughter Katie of Kansas; stepfather, Roy of Okla.; three brothers, Richard
and Donald of Okla., and Frank of Texas; two sisters, Loretta of Tenn., and
Doris of Okla.; and two grandchildren, Kimberly and Andrew, both of Kansas.
SIX
Funeral services for Hudson SIX, 75, were held June 2, in the Calvary Lutheran
Church. Burial was in the Sylvan Cemetery under the direction of
Nightingale-Gilmore Funeral Chapel.
Mr. SIX was born July 21, 1922, in Euche, Okla., and he died May 27, 1998.
He was a full-blood Cherokee and was raised in a Sequoyah Indian Orphanage
in Oklahoma. Mr. SIX was a W.W.11 Veteran, and awarded the Purple Heart.
He was past Commander of the Citrus Heights V.F.W. A retired lumber worker
and and a well know Indian Elder, respected by everyone and was active in
all Indian gatherings and celebrations.
Mr. SIX was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet; and a sister, Nellie
SIX.
Survivors include, three daughters, Mary Ruth, Judy Ann and Susan, all of
Calif.; two brothers, Franklin and Grant; special niece, Janie; and six
grandchildren.
JENNINGS
Funeral services for Ahniwake JENNINGS, 78, of Pryor, were held November
12, in the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dennis RITCHIE officiating.
Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore under the direction of Key
Funeral Home of Pryor.
Mrs. JENNINGS was born December 23, 1919, in Claremore, Okla., the daughter
of Dave and Jennie MCCLELLAN FAULKNER, and she died November 8, 1998, in
Pryor.
She grew up and attended and graduated from Claremore High School. She then
attended the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, Okla. She was married
to Raymond J. JENNINGS on September 23, 1939, in Okmulgee, Okla. For the
first 22 years of married life she survived two wars and many moves, raising
four sons, being a military wife. She and her family then moved to Pryor
in 1961, settling on a farm west of Pryor.
She was a member of the Presbyterian faith, and a member of the
Pocahontas-Cherokee Women's Club.
Mrs. JENNINGS was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and her
parents.
Survivors include, her husband Raymond of the home; four sons, Stephen, David
and Roger, all of Okla., and Raymond of Md.; one brother, Foreman of Okla.;
one sister, Coleela of Okla.; nine grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
MOSE
Funeral services for Jeffrey MOSE, 33, of Welling, were held November 27,
at Reed-Culver Chapel. Burial was in the Weeley Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Thomas CALDWELL, Walter PIGEON, Rip TIGER, Willard OOSAHWEE,
Henry HOLCOMB and J.R. PHILPOTT.
Mr. MOSE was born September 9, 1965 in Tahlequah, Okla., the son of William
Sr. and Lucille CABBAGEHEAD MOSE, and he died November 23, 1998, in
Tahlequah.
Mr. MOSE attended Briggs and Tahlequah Schools. Jeffrey was a member of the
Knighthawks in the Keetoowah Society.
Mr. MOSE was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary and Kathleen; one brother, William; three
nephews, Michael, Robert and Jimmy Dale; one uncle William; and two aunts,
Darlene and Irene, all of Okla.
ROCK
Funeral services for Charles ROCK Jr., 59, of Checotah, Okla., were held
October 26 in the First Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Larry HAGGARD
officiating. Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of
Merritt's Funeral Home of Eufaula, Okla.
Charles was born February 5, 1939, in Porum, Okla., the son of Charlie and
Lillian BOLAND ROCK, and he died October 20, 1998, in Edgewood, Calif.
Charles was a full-blood Cherokee and married Bernice LUKE, January 16, 1960,
in the Shady Grove community near Checotah, Okla. They lived all of their
married life in Checotah. He drove a truck across the country for 35 years
before his death in Edgewood, Calif.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Lillian ROCK of
Inola, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice of the home; four sons, Rusty, Chumpy,
Chris and Michael all of Okla.; four sisters, Florine, Sarah, Mary and Sue
all of Okla.; two brothers, Johnnie of Okla., and Herbert of Ark.; and six
grandchildren, Tony, Nicole, Cody, Morgan, Natasha and Tyler, all of Okla.
