COCHRAN
Joe D. "J.D." COCHRAN, 63, of Tahlequah, died November 11, 1993, at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa. Services were held November 13, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Elder Gene KEECHI and Elder Roe HALLMARK officiating. Burial was in the Tahlequah City Cemetery.
Mr. COCHRAN was born February 6, 1930 in Independence, Kansas, to Price and Fannie BOTTS COCHRAN. He grew up in Independence and attended school there. During the Korean Conflict, he served with the United States Army. Following his discharge, he returned to Independence where he was a carpenter, truck driver and farmer.
On January 3, 1974, he married Bertha SEXTON in Wagoner, Okla. They moved to Tahlequah, where he was a leather craftsman at the Cherokee Nation. He worked for 12 years at Baker's Furniture Store, and the last five years for Tim BAKER. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints at Park Hill, Okla. He was president of the Cherokee Nation Riding Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha, of the home; seven daughters, Sue of Ark., Janice of N.M., Joyce of Okla., Billie of Wash, Connie and Ellen of Texas, and Kathy of Kansas; two sons, Russell of Texas and Jody of Okla.; two brothers, Wendell of Mo., and Doug of Okla.; three sisters, Rosie of Calif., Rita of Kansas, and Zelda of Okla.; his parents, Price and Fannie of Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and two great granchildren.

STILL
Sammie Allen STILL, 79, of Claremore, died November 28. Services were held December 1, at the Reed-Culver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John SUMMERFIELD officiating. Burial was in the Ross Cemetery at Park Hill.
Mr. STILL was born July 29, 1914, in Tahlequah to Ned and Ida Myrtle NAVE STILL.
He attended school at Tahlequah. He served as an Army Medic during W.W.11. He married Eula Ione LAY at Tulsa and she preceded him in death on April 28, 1991. He worked for several years for the railraoad and had also worked several years in California. He was a member of the American Legion Post #141 and was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Claremore where he also served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
He is survived by his mother, Ida Myrtle of Okla.; three sons Tommy and Clifford of Okla., and Sammy of Texas; two brothers, Ned and Marvin of Okla.; three sisters, Ella Mae, Sally and Eva, all of Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

MAYFIELD
Ross MAYFIELD, Sr., 79, died October 26, at his home in Ukiah, Calif. Services were held October 29 at Eversole Mortuary with Pastor Jim BAILEY of Bible Baptist Church. Burial was in the Ukiah Cemetery. Mr. MAYFIELD was born November 16, 1913, in Nowata, Okla., but had been a resident of Ukiah for the past 50 years. He was a well-known businessman. He was a member of the Ukiah Elks Lodge, Cherokee Nation and Bible Baptist Church. A farmer and sawmill operator, MAYFIELD also made cattle deals throughout the Midwest. He founded the Mendo Mill and Lumber Company in Ukiah now the Big River Lumber Company.
MAYFIELD's wife of 45 years, Lucille, says her husband helped found the town of Disney, Okla., where he owned and operated a hardware store, the movie theater, and the town's electrical power plant - until the Grand River Dam was completed. MAYFIELD then joined the government's security operation at the dam, which now forms the "Grand Lake of the Cherokees."
Survivors include his wife, of the home, seven sons, Bill, Ross Jr., Rick, Ronnie, Rodney, Claude and Roger; one brother, John Sr.; father-in-law Henry, all of Calif.; and 18 grandchildren.

PARAS
Prudie H. PARAS, 99, died November 12. Services were held November 15, in the Agent Chapel in Muldrow. Interment was in the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Muldrow, Okla.
She was Postmaster at Short, Okla., for 20 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Claudine of Ark., and Inez and Lucille of Okla.; two sons, Bill of Ark., and Ray of Texas; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

DUVALL
Coleman C. DUVALL, 84, died November 16. Services were held November 18, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Berneil ROGERS officiating. Interment was in the National Cemetery, Ft. Gibson, Okla. He was born December 16, 1908 in Vian to Ben and Alice GLASS DUVALL. He was raised in Vian and married Margaret SEEDIG on February 4, 1942. During W.W.11, he served in the Air Force for three years. He worked for many years as a cook at W.W. Hastings Hospital and was a member of the First General Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of the home; one brother Mack of Okla.; and many other relatives.

CHRISTIE
Roger Wayne CHRISTIE, 30, of Tahlequah, died December 2, at the Tahlequah City Hospital. Services were held December 6, at the Cedar Tree Tabernacle with Rev. Bill GRASS officiating. Interment was in the Cedar Tree Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
Mr. CHRISTIE was born January 2, 1963, in Tahlequah to Johnny Richard and Sharon Kay KINDLE CHRISTIE. He grew up at Westville, graduating from Westville High School. He had worked in the construction business.
Survivors include his mother, Sharon; his maternal grandparents, Virgil and Myrtle; and his paternal grandfather, George, all of Okla.; one son, Shawn of Mo.; one daughter Shantal of Mo.; one sister, Tonya of Okla.; one brother Johnny of Okla.; and his girlfriend, Dawn of Okla.

PARRIS
Noah PARRIS, 77, of Garden Grove, Calif., formerly of Cherokee County, died December 10, at the Garden Grove Hospital. Services were held December 15, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Revs. Jimmy BELL and Jimmy LAYNE officiating. Interment was in the Parris Cemetery with Military rites by the Tahlequah Veterans Council.
Mr. PARRIS was born September 23, 1916, in Gideon, Okla., to Taylor and Emma BLACKWELL PARRIS. He attended the Gideon School and later moved to California. He was a veteran of W.W.11, serving in the United States Army with the Third  Division of the Thirtieth Infantry Regiment, and was stationed in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Germany. On July 28, 1945, he married Blanche L. MARK, in Pasaden, Calif. He had been in Civil Service with the Fire Department for 29 1/2 years, retiring in 1970. He had worked with his wife in her business for 30 years. He was a member of the Garden Grove Community Church.  
Survivors include his wife, Blanche, of the home; one son, Eddy Mark of Arizona; three daughters, Sandra, Kathy and Nola, all of Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.

NAPIER
Pearl Cargill NAPIER, 83, of Tahlequah, died December 8, at the Tahlequah Nursing Home. Services were held December 13, at the Calvary Assembly of God Church with Rev. Artis MOON officiating. Interment was in the Tahlequah City Cemetery under the direction of the Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.
Mrs. NAPIER was born March 15, 1910, to Jim and Myrtle BARKER MCCOY. She lived in Oklahoma at various places and was married to L.E. CARGILL at Henryetta. She was a Tahlequah resident since 1940, operating Pearl's Cafe for many years. She was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church.
Among those she leaves behind are: one daughter, Armilda; two stepsons, Lon and Gene; one stepdaughter, Cora, all of Okla.; two sisters, Ola and Hazel of Texas; two great grandsons, Carl of Okla. and Chase of Texas; one great granddaughter Melanie of Texas.

WINSETT
Elmer Ray WINSETT Jr., 72, of Tahlequah, died December 8, at the Tahlequah City Hospital. Services were held December 13, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. David WHITE officiating. Interment was in the U.S. National Cemetery at Fort Gibson.
Mr. WINSETT was born October 2, 1921 in Bentonville, Ark., to James F. and Lottie GREEN WINSETT. His family moved to Park Hill when he was 2 months old, where he grew up as a farm boy. During W.W.11, he served in the US. Army from 1942-1945. He was stationed in the Caribbean Sea as an Army Cook. Following his discharge, he opened a gas station in Amarillo, Texas. On May 17, 1958, he married the former Carol Jean BROWN. Upon his return to Oklahoma, he operated a feed store, before moving to Muskogee, where he drove a mail truck. He later worked for Dresser Engineer Co. in Tulsa, from which he retired in 1982.
He is survived by his wife Carol, of the home; five daughters, Donna, Lottie, Barbara, Clara and Linda; four sons, Jesse, Elmer, Billy and James; and one adopted son, David, all of Okla.; six sisters, Ruby, Ruth and Lorene of Calif., Rosie and Velma of Okla., and Sylvia of Ark.; one brother, Charlie of Okla.; and 22 grandchildren.

BAKER
Deloris DOWNING BAKER, 82, died November 14, 1993, at Memorial Hospital in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Services were held November 17, 1993, at Roberts Funeral Chapel in Westville with Rev. Rex VANN officiating.  
Burial was in the Sands Cemetery at Chewey.
Deloris BAKER was born October 20, 1911, near Vian, the daughter of Daniel and Viola LEWIS DOWNING.
The house in which she was born had been the Tahlontuskee Council House of the Old Settler Cherokees.
She leaves behind her husband, Ed of the home; two sons, Kenneth and Jack; one brother, Howard, all of Okla.; two step daughters, Evelyn, of Okla. and Geneva of Ore.; and three grandchildren, Gregory of Colo., and Dara and Brent of Okla. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Audrey HOLT and Margaret HUNTER; and a half-brother, Mick DOWNING.

STARR
Eugene Frank STARR, 89, Independence, Mo., died December 13, 1993, at the Independence Regional Health Center. Services were held December 16, 1993, at Newcomer's Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City, Mo., with the Rev. Ralph Nite and the Rev. Eugene Whelan officiating. Interment was in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Mr. STARR was born near Stilwell, Okla. [Indian Territory], June 19, 1904, to Nathaniel Floyd and Sarah FLETCHER STARR. He was an original enrollee of the Dawes Commission. He moved to the Kansas City area in 1943.
He was a member of Centropolis Baptist Church in Kansas City.
Mr. STARR leaves behind his wife, Ruth, of the home; three daughters, Ila Mae of N.C., Lowee of Kans., and Betty June of Mo.; one stepson, Winston of Ohio; one stepdaughter, Roberta of Mex.; one brother, Ralph of Wash.; two sisters, Opal of Colo., and Betty of Okla.; five grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren.

GRASS
Sharon L. GRASS, 49, of Hulbert, died Dec. 12, 1993, at the W.W. Hastings Hospital. Services were held December 14, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Sam KEENER officiating. Burial followed in the Keener Cemetery.
Mrs. GRASS was born March 10, 1944, in Tahlequah, the daughter of Luke and Nora KEENER WELCH. She was a lifelong resident of Cherokee County.
Among those Mrs. GRASS leaves behind include two daughters, Sherrie and Angela; two sons, Kevin and Robert; her father, Luke; three brothers, Kenneth, Gary and Marvin; and three grandchildren, all of Okla. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nora WELCH.

JUSTICE
Arthur W. JUSTICE, Sr., 81, of Wagoner, died Dec. 17, 1993, in Tulsa.  Services were held December 21, at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Wagoner with Revs. Eddie JAMES and Willie DAVIS officiating. Interment was in the Tahlequah City Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
Mr. JUSTICE was born May 17, 1912, in Westville, Okla., the son of Walter and Freddie GRANT JUSTICE. He was a 1931 graduate of Tahlequah High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in industrial arts from Northeastern State Teachers College in 1939. He then earned his Masters of Science degree in Industrial Arts Education from Oklahoma State University in 1953. He was married to Myrtle RASNIC August 9, 1937, in Stilwell. He taught school for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in numerous rural schools including Barber, Hungry Mountain, Yonkers, Ramona, Yardeka and Cave Springs. Mr. JUSTICE retired from the OK Public School system after 36 years of teaching service. He was baptized at an early age by his father, Rev. Walter JUSTICE. He was a faithful member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Wagoner. He served in the United States Army during W.W.11 and fought in the China, Burma, India Theater from 1942 to 1946.
Mr. JUSTICE leaves behind his wife, Myrtle, of the home; one son, James Robert; one brother Jim R.; one sister Ellen Jean; two granddaughters, Diana and Charlotte; and two step granddaughters, Christina and Carrie, all of Okla.

FISH
Eliza Marie FISH, 83, of Tahlequah, died January 4, 1994, at the W.W. Hastings Hospital. Services were held January 6, at the Calvary Assembly of God Church with Rev. Larry HATFIELD officiating. Interment was in the Hendricks Cemetery under the direction of the Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
Mrs. FISH was born December 30, 1910, in Tahlequah, the daughter of Bud Walkabout and Mary CORDREY CROWE. She attended Sequoyah Elementary and Tahlequah Central High School. In 1928, she married Joe FISH. She had worked in the food service at the United Methodist Children's Home and Tahlequah City Hospital. She was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church and the Women's Ministries.
Among those Mrs. FISH leaves behind include one daughter, Lillie Mae; two grandsons, Joe Marvin and Joe Raymond; and two great granddaughters, Christy and Amanda Jo, all of Okla.

DRYWATER
Pumpkin DRYWATER, 56, of Tahlequah, died January 3, 1994, at the Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa. Services were held January 6, at the Johnson Prairie Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert NOFIRE and Richard PICKUP officiating. Interment was in the Agent Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
Mr. DRYWATER was born March 20, 1937, the son of Dave and Jennie DRUM DRYWATER. He married Akie Mae NOFIRE on February 9, 1959. He was born and raised around Moody, Okla. He later moved to Muskogee, his home for many years before retirement.
He leaves behind his wife, Akie Mae of the home; two sons, Phillips and Elvin; two daughters, Brenda and Linda; three brothers, Stanley, George and Kenneth; two sisters, Geneva and Dolly, all of Okla.; and 10 grandchildren.

BALDRIDGE
Howard Duane BALDRIDGE, 41, of Park Hill, died January 6, 1994, at W.W. Hastings Hospital. Services were held January 7, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. John GOODRICH officiating. Interment was in the Maple Cemetery in Sequoyah County.
Mr. BALDRIDGE was born on October 7, 1952, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Orvel W. "Bud" and Juanita SANDERS BALDRIDGE. He grew up in Herington and Topeka, Kansas. He attended Herington Junior High and Roosevelt Junior High in Topeka, and Topeka High School and Highland Park High Schook in Topeka, where he was active in sports and an outstanding athlete. He later moved to Newton, Kansas.
Among those he leaves behind are his father, Orvel of Okla.; one son, Craig; one daughter, Tina; and one granddaughter, Karri, all of Kansas; five brothers, Harold and Orvel, both of Okla., Jim and Charley, both of Kansas, and Rick; and three sisters, Jawelda of Okla., and Ruby and Lorraine, both of Kansas.

KEENER
Jack Edward KEENER, 20, of Hulbert, died January 5, in an automobile accident. Services were held January 10, in the Reed-Culver Chapel.  Interment was in the Swimmer Cemetery.
Mr. KEENER was born September 20, 1973, in Tahlequah, the son of Alice KEENER. He grew up in Hulbert, graduating from Hulbert High School in 1992.
Among those he leaves behind are his mother, Alice; one sister, Charlotte; a cousin, Michael; an aunt, Minnie; an uncle, Jim and his grandfather, Jim KEENER, Sr., all of Okla.

NAVE
Noah NAVE, 83, Hominy, died January 7, at the St. John Medical Center.  Services were held January 11, at the Cleveland First Baptist Church with the Rev. BOSTON officiating. Burial was in the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Powell Funeral Home.
Noah was born November 3, 1910, in Tahlequah to Thomas NAVE, Sr. and Laura BARTON NAVE. He was raised and educated in the Tahlequah area.  In 1940, he married Ethel MORGAN NAVE at the Hominy Court House. Noah moved to the Hominy area in 1936 and lived there until he moved to Cleveland in 1974. Noah was a member of the AQHA for 50 plus years, the Cherokee Nation, and the Cleveland, Hominy and Pawhuska Round-Up Clubs. Mr. NAVE was also a Quarterhorse breeder, champion cow milker and most of all an all-around cowboy that loved to dance.
Among those he leaves behind include a son, Flemen of Ariz.; two brothers, Hooley and Thomas, both of Okla.; two sisters, Ella and Sallie, both of Okla.; four grandchildren, Kay and Becky, both of Ariz., and Viola and Noah S., both of Okla.; and two great grandchildren Brock and Nick.

WATERDOWN
Allen "Bullet" WATERDDOWN, 59, died January 28, at the St. John Medical Center in Tulsa. Services were held February 2, in the Reed-Culver Chapel. Interment was in the Barber Cemetery.
He was born October 12, 1934, the son of Steve and Nellie KEYS WATERDOWN. He grew up in Tahlequah, graduating from Tahlequah High School. He attended Northeastern State University.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Jennie GIVENS WATERDOWN; two daughters, Kita and Leota; and one son, Steven, all of Okla.; one sister, Betsy of Okla.; one brother, Sundie of Calif.; and three grandchildren, Jeremy Allen, Justin Ray and Cheyenne Nicole.

MARSHALL
Robert Neal MARSHALL, 61, of Welling, died January 29, at his home at Etta Bend. Services were held February 1, at the Tahlequah First Lutheran Church with Revs. Harold KLAWITTER and Robert KRAHN officiating. Interment was in the Duck Creek Cemetery in Tulsa County.
He was born February 19, 1932, in Perry, the son of Roscoe Robert and Eleanora Annamarie WEISS MARSHALL. He grew up in Perry and was a graduate of Hayward High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force from 1950-54. Following his discharge he attended Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.  
In 1991, he moved to his property at Etta Bend, Welling, Okla. He was a member of the Glenpool V.F.W. Post, Northeastern Oklahoma Square Dance Association and was a member and Deacon of the Tahlequah First Lutheran Church.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Beverly Ann of the home; two daughters, Debra and Kimberly; his sister, Faye; two grandchildren, Chris and Courtland; and two aunts, all of Okla.

WILKINS
Ida Mae WILKINS, 89, of Tulare, California, died November 22, 1993.  Graveside services were held November 24, 1993, at the Tulare District Cemetery with Rev. Richard HUBACEK officiating.
She was born November 4, 1904, in Catoosa, Okla. [Indian Territory] She spent most of her life in California. She was always proud of her Cherokee ancestry. She and her husband were married for over 59 years.
Among those she leaves behind are her husband M.J. WILKINS; and two sons, Jim and Bill, both of California.

MILLER
James Roy (Charley) MILLER, 27, of Butte, Mont., died January 3.  Services were held January 8, at Nelson's Funeral Home in Fayetteville, Ark., with Rev. Buel CURTIS officiating. Burial was in the Mount Comfort Cemetery.
He was born October 11, 1966, in Fayetteville, the son of James E. MILLER and Nancy SCOTT. He moved to Butte in May 1993, where he worked as a pawn broker. He was an Army veteran, having served in the P.V.E. 6th Support Battalion in Berlin, Germany, before being placed on active reserve status.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Lisa; one daughter, Stephanie of Ark.; one step-brother, Al of Okla.; one sister Teresa of Ark.; three step-sisters; his father, James of Ark.; his mother and stepfather, Al and Nancy of Mont.; his paternal grandmother, Hazel of Ark.; and his maternal grandmother Virginia of Ark.

DUMOND
Pearl A. "Cooch" DUMOND, 97, died January 14, at Tahlequah . Services were held January 17, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Randy WALDROP officiating. Burial was in the Citizens Cemetery.
She was born July 2, 1896 in Fort Gibson, Indian Territory, the daughter of Jim and Jennie CROSSLAND DAVIS. She grew up in Muskogee and Cherokee Counties. On July 24, 1914, she married Albert DUMOND. She was a gold star mother, an avid quilter and a homemaker.
Among those she leaves behind are many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

TAYLOR
Billy F. TAYLOR, 57, of Colcord, died January 16, in Tulsa. Services were held January 19, at the Fairfield Baptist Church with Rev. Utah HUMPHREY officiating. Burial was in the Piney Cemetery.
He was born January 8, 1937, in Moseley, the son of Levi and Bonnie CLINTON TAYLOR. He was raised in the Stilwell area, attending school at Mulberry and Pitcher. On May 8, 1947, he married Aunetia Aliene CROW.  He later served in the U.S. Army. He attended Northeastern State University.
Among those he leaves behind include his wife, of the home; four children, Billy Jr., Alan, Karen and Janice, all of Okla.; six grandchildren, Floyd, Alenen, Taryn, P.J., Jackie and Brittany; his mother, Bonnie, of Okla.; one brother Gifford of Okla.; and two sisters, Mickie of Okla., and Rose of Texas.

SCOTT
Laura Bell SCOTT, 90, of Coffeyville, Kansas, died January 1. Services were held January 6, in the Graves Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Martin Cemetery in Oklahoma.
She was born May 1, 1903, in Centralia, Okla., Indian Territory, to William M. and Minnie E. NUNNALEE HARRISON. She grew up and attended school in the Centralia area, also attending Happy Hill School. She was an original enrollee of the Cherokee Nation and lived in Coffeyville for 70 years. On July 20, 1920, she married James A. SCOTT in Tulsa, Okla.  She was a life member and past president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and also did volunteer work with the U.S.O. during W.W.11.
Among those she leaves behind are four sons, Vernon, Glenn and James, all of Okla., and Melvin of Kansas; three daughters, Minnie of Ark., Patricia of Kansas and Hallee of Okla.; one sister, Golda of Okla.; 24 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.

DAUGHERTY
Harold DAUGHERTY, 86, died January 3. Services were held January 8, at Messinger Mortuary with the Rev. Tom MCCONNELL. He is remembered as a man of patience, perseverance, a cowboy who loved horses, a man with the broadest grin and the biggest gray Stetson.
A Shawnee, born July 25, 1917, in Vinita, Okla., he moved to Scottsdale in the 1930's and worked with Dick GRIFFITH and his championship show horses. He also trained race horses in Idaho, worked for the Brusally Ranch, and after service in W.W.11, became head trainer for the McCORMICK's palomino operation. He was named "Horseman of the Year for 1993" at the All-Arabian event held in February 1993 by the Equine Trust Foundation, "In appreciation of his many unselfish years devoted to the Arizona horse community." DAUGHERTY's ashes were scattered over the McDowells -- the mountains he first glimpsed upon arriving in the Valley as a young cowboy in the late 1930's by Marcel DAUGHERTY, accompanied by his mother.

BROWN
Marietta BROWN, 71, of Tahlequah, died February 19, in Tulsa. Services were held February 23, at the Rock Springs Church in Sasakwa, Okla., with Revs. George (Johnson) HARJO and Gerald MANLEY officiating.
She was born July 13, 1922, in Sasakwa, Seminole County, Okla., the daughter of Charley H. and Belle Pearl COZAD BROWN. She received her bachelor of science and master's degrees in education from Northeastern State University.
BROWN taught at the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas, Riverside High School in Anadarko, and had been acting superintendent of schools for the Midwest City Public Schools. She was hereditary Seminole Indian Princess, and had appeared on the K.B.I.X. radio program sponsored by Robert S. KERR. GRIMMETT
Man GRIMMETT, 58, of Bunch, died February 17, at the Stilwell Memorial Hospital. Services were held February 19, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Revs. Lewis FLYNN and John SNELL officiating. Burial was in the Greenleaf Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
He was born July 30, 1935, in Sequoyah County, Okla., the son of Jess and Laura WASHINGTON GRIMMETT. He grew up in Cherokee County, attending Pigeon School. On March 5, 1977, he married Diana OSAGE. He was a member of the Vann Baptist Church.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Diana of the home; his parents, Laura and Jess; three daughters, Vickie and Patricia; one son Johnny Lee; one brother George; one sister Jennie, all of Okla.; and 15 grandchildren.

LOWREY
Odeine Fern LOWREY, died of heart failure on January 6 in Pasadena, California.
Lowrey was born April 17, 1921 in Coffeyville, Kansas. She lived in southern California for the last 30 years, spending the last five years in Pasadena.
She is survived by her son James D., her brother Jim Dale and her sister, Maxine. Lowrey was 72 at the time of her death.

STARR
Jean STARR, 59, died January 18. She was born July 6, 1935, the daughter of LeDrue STROBEL and Doris GAINES STROBEL.
Jean grew up in south Florida, Louisville, Ky., and Indianapolis, Ind.  While completing a double major in journalism and history at Franklin College of Indiana, Jean worked as a janitor, police reporter and anything else available in her determination to pay her way. After graduating from Franklin, she went to work at Fort Benjamin Harrison in the Army reserve Public Relations office. She married in 1960.
She wrote poems, culminating in the books, "Songs of Power" and "Tales from the Cherokee Hills." These attracted the attention of Indian literary authorities such as Joe BRUCHAC and Garry HOBSON. With their encouragement, she was published in several journals and anthologies.
 In 1992, she became a charter member of the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas.
Among those she leaves behind are her mother, Doris; her brother, Berkeley; her daughter Elaine; her husband, Winn; thousands of former students; and her writing, which will live forever.
As requested, her ashes were scattered in the Great Smokey Mountains, her "Cherokee Hill."

FOWLER
Audie Dean FOWLER, 37, of Park Hill, died March 7. Services were held March 12, at the Salem Indian Baptist Church with Rev. Lawrence EAGLE officiating. Burial was in the Stilwell City Cemetery.
He was born October 11, 1956, in Broken Arrow, the son of Clint and Josephine FEATHERS FOWLER.
Among those he leaves behind are his father, Clint of Ark.; one daughter, Chloe of Okla.; one son, William of Okla.; two sisters, Jan of Okla., and Latonna of Ark.; and two brothers, Danny and Matt, both of Okla.

HANDLE
Jackson HANDLE, 68, of Stilwell, Okla., died March 5, at the Stilwell Memorial Hospital. Services were held March 10, at the Echota Indian Baptist Church with Revs. Willie PRITCHETT and Richard PICKUP officiating. Burial was in the Echota Cemetery.
He was born March 17, 1925 in Jay, Okla., the son of Tom and Bessie NIX HANDLE.
On July 27, 1972, he married Irene ADAIR at Stilwell. He was a member of the Echota Indian Baptist Church.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Irene; one son, Eugene; one step-daughter, Darlene; and one brother Landrum, all of Okla.; three sisters, Lula Mae and Nancy, both of Okla., and Ailene of Ariz.; one aunt, Alva; one uncle, Robert; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Gene and Kelly; and seven nieces and nephews, all of Okla.

JORDAN
Ray (Blue) JORDAN, 77, of Tulsa, died February 16. Services were held February 18, at the Moore South Lawn Chapel in Tulsa.
Mr. JORDAN was born in Mansville, Ark., on May 20, 1916. He lived in Miami before moving to Tulsa.
He served in the Army Infantry as a sergeant. He played baseball in the service as well as with the Miami Blues. He attended Seneca Indian School at Wyondotte, Okla., and the Chilocco Indian School.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Gerry; a daughter, Janna of Florida; two step-sons, Terry and Dale, both of Okla.; two brothers, Lindsey of Okla., and Obie of Mo.; and a sister, Fay of N.M.

VANCE
John Joseph VANCE, 78, of Park Hill, died March 9, at the Tahlequah City Hospital. Services were held March 14 at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Revs. Charles J. SWETT and John KING officiating. Burial was in the Park Hill Cemetery.
Mr. VANCE was born December 18, the son of William Goodman and Margaret ELY VANCE. He grew up in Baltimore, where he attended St. Ambrose School. He moved south of Tahlequah in September 1977, and resided there until the time of his death. An avid golfer, he played several years in the public parks golf tournaments.
A W.W.11 veteran, he was a boatswain's mate first class in the United States Navy, stationed in Washington, D.C., where he met and married Lillie KINNEY on February 1, 1945. He served five years and three months in the U.S. navy.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife of 49 years, Lillie; one daughter Barbara of Md.; two grandsons, Douglas of W.V. and Dennis of Md.; one sister, Rosalie of Md.; a nephew, Arnold of Md.; a niece, Emily of Okla.; and his 97 year old mother-in-law, Ella of Okla.

SANDERS
Herbert Dwain SANDERS, 49, of Cookson, died March 10, at the Muskogee Regional Medical Center. Services were held March 13, at St. Basil's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Donald L. JACKSON and Rev. Bob KANARY officiating. Burial was in the Cookson-Proctor Cemetery.
Mr. SANDERS was born August 24, 1944, in West Plains, Mo., the son of Denver Franklin and Leota Louise SHRIVER SANDERS. He grew up in Carthage, Mo., graduating from Carthage High School. He received his Associate of Arts Degree from Joplin Junior College and his degree in Business administration from Pittsburg State University at Pittsburg, Kansas.
He was an Army reservist, a member of the Cattleman's Association, National Rifleman's Association and a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage, Mo.
Among those he leaves behind are his mother, Leota of Mo.; four children, Brooke, Stone and Blake of Okla., and Hannah of Mo.; one brother, Dale of Mo.; and two sisters, Carolyn and Sheila, both of Mo.

BUSSEY
Chief Downing BUSSEY, 72, of Tahlequah, died March 15, at his home.  Services were held March 17, at the U.S. National Cemetery at Fort Gibson with Rev. Charles DUVALL officiating.
Chief BUSSEY was born April 24, 1921, at Wild Horse, Okla., the son of Hesakia and Martha DOWNING BUSSEY. His father was a U.S. Marshall in Indian Territory and died when his son was two years old. His mother was a daughter of Mack DOWNING and Eliza VANN, and died when Chief was 12 years old.
So her children would receive an education, Chief's mother placed him and his brothers and sisters in the Whittaker Orphanage. He attended Oaks Indian Mission School and Albuquerque Indian School.
During W.W.11, he served in the United States Navy, and was stationed in the south Pacific until he became disabled and was discharged in 1944.  Following the war, he met and married Wilma WATKINS in 1951 in Denver, Colo., and later moved to San Diego, Calif. He was a plumber, working on large construction projects. He worked on the first skyscraper built in San Diego, Calif.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Wilma; two daughters, Ruthie of Okla., and Susan of Hawaii; two sons, Kyle of the home and Allen of Florida; one brother, Woodrow of Ariz.; two sisters, Wahilau of Ariz. and Ruth of N.M.; one grandson, Douglass of Okla.; and three granddaughters, Jenifer of Okla, and Kitty and Peggy, both of Hawaii.

HOLMES

Wilson HOLMES, 71, died March 21, at the Muskogee Regional Medical Center. Services were held March 23, in the chapel of the Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
Mr. HOLMES was born March 14, 1923, in Tahlequah, the son of Dave and Susie ROGERS HOLMES. He was reared and educated in Cherokee County. He married Narcie HOOPER. He was of the Baptist faith and attended the Stokes Stomp Ground.
Among those he leaves behind are a daughter, Mary; four sons, Jack, Jim, J.B. and Larry; one brother, Rufus, all of Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.

WHITENER
Jess WHITENER, 81, of Hulbert, died April 4. Services were held April 7, with Revs. George POLECAT and Charley CAREY officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
Mr. WHITENER was born February 14, 1913, in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, the son of Henry and Lizzie BLUE WHITENER. He grew up in Cherokee County and attended the Shady Grove School. On December 6, 1963, he married Malinda DUNCAN. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Hulbert.
He leaves behind his wife, Malinda; three daughters, Donna, Katrina and Kathy, all of Okla.; two sons, Robert of Okla., and Tom of Minn.; four brothers, Thompson and Curly of Okla., Robin of Mo., and Sammy of Texas; six sisters, Darlene, Irene, Ella, Nora and Mary, all of Okla., and Cricket of Texas; one step-sister, Elizabeth of Okla.; and 14  grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

CLINTON
Ruby Marie STILWELL CLINTON, 74, of Tahlequah, died March 30. Services were held April 2 at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Revs. Steve HAMBY and Carl CLARK officiating. Burial was in the White Oak Cemetery at Qualls.
Mrs. CLINTON was born in February 1920, in Stilwell the daughter of Jim and Rosie P. CATHER STILWELL. She grew up and attended school in Adair County. In 1938, she married Classie CLINTON. From 1945 to 1954, she lived in California. She later moved to Cherokee County and was a homemaker.
She leaves behind her children, Dorothy, Phyllis, James, Joyce, Melbra, Shirley, Buddy, Steve, Darlene, Barbara and Henry, all of Okla.; two brothers, Ray of Calif., and Floyd of Okla.; 29 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.

HATHCOAT
Willia Mae HATHCOAT, 80, of Park Hill died April 4. Services were held April 8, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Max SQUYERS officiating. Burial was in the Park Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. HATHCOAT was born December 4, 1913, in Woodall, the daughter of Andrew and Parlee STEELEY POST. She was raised at Woodall. On November 30, 1939, she married John "Smoke" HATHCOAT at Tahlequah. She was a homemaker and housewife, and enjoyed gardening, canning and sewing. She was a member of the Park Hill Home Demonstration Club and the Park Hill Presbyterian Church.
She leaves behind five children: John, Floyd, Billie Sue, Callie Ann, all of Okla., and Maudie of Ala.; one brother, Billy of Okla.; four sisters, L.D., Gladys, Carrie and Annie, all of Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

BUZZARD
Rose BUZZARD, 85, longtime Kildare resident, died April 26, in the Ponca City Nursing Center.
Graveside services were held April 29, in the Newkirk Cemetery with Danny W. CORNISH officiating.
She was born December 23, 1909, the daughter of Jeremiah and Aggie SUMMERFIELD RAVEN. She grew up and received her education at Zena. She lived with her parents until March 1933, when she and Elmer BUZZARD were married in Delaware County.
They made their first home in that area for a short time before moving to a farm west of Chilocco. They lived around the Newkirk area until 1950, when they moved to Kildare.
Ms. BUZZARD had been a resident of the nursing center for the past three years. She enjoyed gardening, camping and fishing.
Among those she leaves behind include five sons, Jeff, Robert and Jackson, all of Kansas, and Andrew and Johnson, both of Okla.; four daughters, Rosie of Kansas, Annie, Betty and Pauline, all of Okla.; two brothers, Ben of Okla., and Alex of Kansas; two sisters, Lydia of Okla., and Ida of California; 18 grandchildren including one she raised, Loretta of New York; and 15 great grandchildren.

NEWVILLE
Genora NEWVILLE, 62, died February 27 in Lewisville, Texas. Services were held March 1, in the Lakeland Baptist Church with the Revs. Ben SMITH and Donny FORSON officiating. A second service was held at the First Baptist Church in Lexington with Rev. Russell NEWVILLE officiating. Burial was in the Lexington Cemetery.
She was born January 25, 1932 in Stilwell, Okla., the daughter of Joe and Margaret BLACKWOOD BURGESS JOHNSON. She attended some boarding schools for part of her educational experience before graduating from Sequoyah Indian High School in Tahlequah in 1950.
On June 6, 1953 she married Cecil Arnold NEWVILLE. They made their home in Oklahoma City for the first 20 years. In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. NEWVILLE moved to Lewisville, Texas.
An active member of the Lakeland Baptist Church there, Mrs. NEWVILLE served as cook for the youth group when they attended Texas Week at the Falls Creek Baptist Assembly near Davis. Mrs. NEWVILLE was a member of the Cherokee Nation. Her given name means "Snowflower" in Cherokee.
Among those she leaves behind include her husband of the home; her children, Nita and Gary, both of Okla., Calvin and Tina, both of Texas, and Clifton of Ind.; two brothers, Isaac of N.M. and Alfred, a noted artist from N.H.; 14 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Ora NEWVILLE of Lexington.

CARNEY
Hubert CARNEY, 75, a short time resident of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and former long time Spokane, Wash., area resident, died May 31, in Mount Vernon, Wash. Services were under the direction of the Lemley Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore., June 8.
He was born April 28, 1920, in McAlister, Okla. He lived in the southwest during his youth and in 1939, joined the U.S. Army in San Antonio, Texas. He received several service accomodations during his tour of duty during W.W.11. Following his discharge he moved to the Spokane area where he lived until moving to Sedro Woolley in April 1994. Mr CARNEY enjoyed the western lifestyle and the rodeo. He followed the rodeo curcuit and participated in the rodeos, roping steers. He was a member of the Cherokee and Seminole Indian Tribes.
He has no known surviving family.

HAIR
Ancie K. HAIR, 82, of Tahlequah died April 10, in Tulsa. Services were held April 13, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. D.J. MCCARTER officiating. Burial was in the Keener Cemetery.
Mrs. HAIR was born April 7, 1912, in Hulbert, the daughter of Johnson W. and Sarah SEQUOYAH KEENER. She grew up near Hulbert and attended Sequoyah Indian Training School.  She was married to Wallace HAIR.
A homemaker, she was a former member and Sunday School teacher at Swimmer Indian Baptist Church. She was a member of the Elm Tree Indian Baptist Church.
Among those she leaves behind include two daughters, Nancy and Juanita; one sister, Wilma, all of Okla.; two granddaughters; six grandsons; and 20 great grandchildren.

CAIN

Mrs. CAIN was born January 4, 1897, at Park Hill, Indian Territory, the daughter of William K. and Emma ROBBINS CARLILE.
She spent her early years near Standing Rock close to Park Hill and attended Carlile School. She moved to Cookson when she was 14. She was a homemaker and a member of the Southside Baptist Church.
Among those she leaves behind include three sons, Mack and George of Okla., and John of Texas; one daughter, Helen of Calif.; two sisters, Addie of Okla., and Juanita of Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren.

Mildred Pauline FRAZEE, 70, of Webbers Falls died April 21 in Sallisaw.  Services were held April 23 at the First Baptist Church in Webbers Falls. Burial was in the White Chapel Cemetery near Gore, Okla.

Thompson "Tommy" Ray WOODARD, 47, of Tahlequah, died April 27, at his home. Services were held May 2, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. John KING officiating. Burial was in the Tahlequah City Cemetery.
Mr. WOODARD was born April 28, 1945, in Tahlequah, the son of Clyde Frank and Opal Edith MILLS WOODARD.
He attended Tahlequah High School, and Tulsa Junior College. He later attended Tulsa Welding School, graduating as a welder. He was also a painter.
Among those he leaves behind include two sons, Preston of Florida, and Heath of Penn.; four step-children, James, Lee, Robin and Stacy; two brothers, Clyde of Okla.; and Roy of Mo.; and one sister, Nellie of Okla.

STRATTON
George Arthur STRATTON, 41, of Cookson, died April 28. Services were held May 1, at the St. John Catholic Church at Cookson with Rev. Michael ROONEY officiating.
Mr. STRATTON was born Sept. 10, 1952, in Tahlequah, the son of Howard Arg and Phyllis Joan BURKEY STRATTON.
He grew up at Cookson, and graduated from Tahlequah High School in 1970. In 1974, he graduated from Notre Dame with his B.A. Degree in English. He earned his master's degree from the University of Chicago, and became an instructor at the University of Tulsa and Tulsa Junior College.
He was a political lobbyist involving environmental and many other cultural issues of the past 20 years. He spoke five languages and wrote political newspaper. For the past few years, he assisted with the managementof the family property.
Among those he leaves behind include his mother, Phyllis; one brother, David, of Okla.; and two sisters, Phyllis of Texas, and Sarah of Okla.

CAVINESS
Kevin Wayne CAVINESS, 17, of Hulbert, died May 20. Services were held May 23, at the Reed-Culver Funeral Chapel with Revs. Jeff WEST and Jess FENCH officiating. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Kevin was born August 21, 1976, in Tahlequah, the son of Ray Eugene CAVINESS and Patricia Ann SCRAPER. He attended school at Norwood, Hulbert High School and Fort Gibson. He was a member of the Fort Gibson High School football team and a volunteer fireman at Norwood.

JONES
John Bryan JONES, 91, died in St. Petersburg, Fla., September 11,  1993. A memorial service was held August 5, 1994, at the Reed-Culver Chapel. Mr. JONES was born in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, January 7, 1902. His father was James Jackson JONES and his mother was Mary MERSHON JONES, both buried in Tahlequah. Mr. JONES attended public schools in Sequoyah and Cherokee Counties, including his first two years of high school at what is now Northeastern State University. Some years ago he donated to Northeastern in memory of his parents a family-held tract of 90 acres designated "The Jones-Merson Tract, Northeastern Oklahoma State University." He graduated from Denison High School in Texas in 1920 and Texas A&M in 1926 with a B.A. in Agricultural Administration. He spent many years in the world of finance. He was a founding member of the President's Endowed Scholars program at Texas A&M, was twice elected president of the Huguenot Society of Maryland, was a member of the S.A.R. in Maryland and of the Towson Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife Lucy M. JONES: son Bryan of Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

HOLLAND
Gurves Levi HOLLAND, 78, of Tahlequah, died July 24. Services were held July 27, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. J.E. COOK officiating. Burial was in the Stroud City Cemetery.

MCALISTER
Lawrence Sevier MCALISTER, M.D., died July 19. Services were held July 22 in Muskogee, Okla. MCALISTER was born February 24, 1905 in Webbers Falls. He was a beloved physician in Muskogee where he practiced for 54 years. Among those he leaves behind are his wife Clare and his children, Lawrence, John and Barbara.

TUCKER
Dorothy Mae ROSE TUCKER, 77, of Tahlequah, died August 15, in Tulsa. Services were held August 17, in the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Max SQUYRES and Mr. Ron BABBIT officiating. Burial was in the Boudinot Cemetery. Among those she leaves behind are three daughters, Pat of Mo., Wanda of Calif., and Betty of Okla.; one brother, Lloyd of Calif.; one sister Alta of Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

SKIRVIN
Louie Clay SKIRVIN died June 2, in Vinita. Services were held June 4, in the Burckhalter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Martin FOSTER officiating.
He was born to Joseph Clay SKIRVIN and Louise HAWKINS SKIRVIN on August 12, 1911 in Vinita. He attended school in LaBelle, Mo., where he graduated. He was an outstanding athlete in high school, lettering in five sports. During W.W.11, he worked on construction and production of the Oklahoma Ordinance Works. He was employed in Tulsa and later operated a family service station/restaurant business there. In 1949, he and his wife opened the Louie Skirvin Feed Store and operated it for some 20 plus years.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Opal, of the home; a daughter, Jo Sue of Texas; a granddaughter Jo Lil of N.J.; one sister, Maxine of Vinita; a daughter from a previous marriage, Shirley of Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

MOUSE
Jefferson Louis MOUSE, 55 of Salina, died June 29, in Tulsa. Services were held July 2 at the Elm Prairie Baptist Church in Leach with Rev. Barry Wayne CHRISTIE officiating. Burial was in the Long Prairie Cemetery at Kansas.
Among those he leaves behind are: nine daughters, Dana and Rhonda of Ark., Janice of Mo., Karen of Ill., Theola, Theoria, Janet, Vangline and Evelyn, all of Okla.; five sons, Jeff of Ark., Theodore of the U.S. Navy, James, Dickerson and Elvis, all of Okla.; one brother, Frank of Okla.; two sisters, Jane of Okla., and Thelma of Mo.; and many grandchildren.

Eliza PANN, 88, of Tulsa, died June 28. Services were held July 1, at the Reed-Culver Funeral Home with Rev. Charley CAREY officiating. Burial was in the Swimmer Cemetery.
Among those she leaves behind are two daughters, Mary and Reatha; one son, Hoover, all of Okla.; five grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

EDWARDS
J. Carter EDWARD, 35, of Hulbert died June 20. Services were held June 24 at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Jerry HENSON officiating. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Among those he leaves behind are two sisters, Marsha and Elizabeth, both of Okla.; one half-sister, Yvonne of Calif.

HOUSTON
Jess Allen HOUSTON, 32, of Tahlequah died June 8. Serivces were held June 11, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. Randall CUMMINGS and Rev. Jerry HENSON officiating. Burial was in the Greenleaf Cemetery.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Sue and his son, Chris, both of the home; his mother, Juanita; three brothers, Daniel, Don and Ron; two sisters, Patricia and Brenda; one uncle Bill; one great-uncle, Leon, all of Okla.; and eighteen nieces and nephews.

CONRAD
Albert W. CONRAD, 81, of Vinita, died June 16. Services were held June 20, at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Revs. J.E. COOK and John BRILL officiating. Burial was in the National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife Imogene of the home; nine children, John and Wayne of Texas, Welchie, Eddie and Joy of Calif., Wynola, Ramona and Delois of Okla., and June of Nev.; one brother, Hiawatha; three sisters, Sarah, Lucille and Kathleen, all of Okla.; 23 grandchildren; and 41 great grandchildren.

HENDRICKS
Earl Raymond HENDIRCKS, 71, of Tahlequah, died July 5. Graveside services were held July 8 at the Park Hill Cemetery.
Among those he leaves behind are one son, Jimmy; two daughters, Judy and Wanda; five grandchildren; one sister, Billie; and one brother, Cecil, all of Okla.

GANN
Jim GANN, 69, of Stilwell died July 13. Graveside services were held at the Rock Fence Cemetery with Rev. Frank MINK officiating.
Among those he leaves behind are one sister, Sally; and one brother, Charley, both of Okla.

RACKLIFF
Scot RACKLIFF, 71, of Rockyford, died July 16. Services were held July 19, at the New Mission Indian Baptist Church with Rev. James O'FIELD officiating. Burial was in the Bill Batt Cemetery. He practiced the art of flintknapping for more than 12 years. His works include arrowheads, spearheads, flint fish hooks and other stone tools. He also created the tools associated with flint pieces such as bows and arrows, spears and gigs. Mr. RACKLIFF was the elder at the Ancient Village at the Heritage Center, where he demonstrated his craftsmanship and knowledge to many visitors from all over the world. He also taught many young Cherokees the art of flintknapping as his way of passing this valuable tradition and art on to future generations.
Among those he leaves behind are his wife Anna of the home; three daughters, Nancy, Pamela and Sue, of Okla.; three sons, John and Harry of Okla., and Scott Jr. of Texas; three sisters, Emma, Bessie and Lena, of Okla.; two brothers, Jess of Okla., and Bill of Ark.; 11 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
