SHOTPOUCH
Mike SHOTPOUCH, 75, of Eucha, Oklahoma, died June 13 at his home after an
illness. The son of Bird and Mary BUZZARD SHOTPOUCH, he was born on August
28, 1924, in Delaware County, Oklahoma. He was a full-blood member of the
Cherokee Nation, well-known for cooking at hog fries.
He was a school bus driver for the Jay Public Schools for 15 years and retired
from ranching with the Lyon's Ranch in 1986. He was a member of the Indian
Free Holiness Church. Mike married Jewel CHOPPER on August 14, 1950. His
parents preceded him in death, as did his brother, Elmer, the latter on May
9.
Survivors include his wife Jewel; nine children, Melvina, Jackson, Johnson,
Michael, Mary, Helen, Sarah, Deanna and Durwin; and a brother Gilbert, all
of Oklahoma; also18 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great great
grandchild.
Service were held on June 17 at the First Assembly of God Church in Jay with
interment at the Hillside Cemetery, under the directions of Worley-Luginbuel
Funeral Home in Jay.
HARRISON
Benny HARRISON was born in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, on March 3, 1927, to Ben and
Edna PERRY HARRISON. He died June 10 at the St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa,
Oklahoma, and was interred in the Sanders Cemetery in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.
He was a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation. He had attended the South
Grand Lake Baptist Church, near Disney, Oklahoma, for several years.
He came to Oklahoma to retire after working for 45 years in the California
Bay Area for Santa Fe Railways and as a Teamster. Benny made his home with
his wife Maxine on the old Eden homestead near Disney for the past 15
years.
Besides Maxine, survivors include three sons; Mike, Glenn and Rick of California
and a brother, Pete and a sister Mary, who live in Arizona.
NORTHCROSS
Funeral services for Mary Charlotte "Sis" NORTHCROSS, 84, or Pryor, were
held May 3 at the Key Funeral Home Chapel in Pryor, Oklahoma. Rev. Jack DUFF
officiated with interment in the Fairview Cemetery, under the direction of
Key Funeral Home in Pryor.
Mrs. NORTHCROSS was born May 4, 1915, near Chouteau, Oklahoma, to Benjamin
Franklin and Flora Etta ALBERTY GOSS. She died May 1, 2000, in Pryor. She
was baptized into the Baptist faith. She was a Cherokee Nation tribal member
and a member of the Association of Descendants of Nancy Ward. Mrs. NORTHCROSS
was also member #117 of First Families of Polk County, Tennessee.
Mrs. NORTHCROSS is survived by one son, Jimmie; two daughters, Joyce and
Jean; two step-sons, Joe and Jack; one step-daughter, Gladene; one brother,
Bill; and a niece Barbara, all of Oklahoma; also by nine grandchildren, and
12 great grandchildren.
Mrs. NORTHCROSS was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, husbands
Norman "Buster" CASEY, E.A. "Nelse" RUDD and Alfred NORTHCROSS.
GAHRING
Wilma J. GAHRING, 78, of Shawnee, Oklahoma, died February 24 at a Shawnee
nursing home. She was born December 2, 1921, in Claremore, Oklahoma, to George
and Kate BOONE. She was raised in Claremore and lived in Shawnee since
1964.
She married Ross R. GAHRING on May 21, 1942, in Claremore. Mrs. GAHRING was
a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and an Alter Guild Volunteer at the
Mabee-Gerrer Museum.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, George and Robert
BOONE and one daugher, Jean GAHRING DAVISON.
Survivors include husband Ross R. GAHRING; two sons, Stanley of Ohio, and
Craig of Oklahoma; a sister, Catherine of Oklahoma; seven grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 28, at Emmanuel Episcopal
Church with the Rev. Arthur P. Scrutchins officiating, assisted by the Rev.
Percy JENKINS. Burial was at Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction
of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
