Notes for HENRY ECHLER:

He was born illegitimate. His father was a soldier . He was christened, January 21,1815, but was given no surname. In a later notation in the church records, it is stated that the military court had found Christian Oechler guilty and on May 16, 1818 ordered that the child must bear his surname. Henry served in the army at the capitol, when he became of age. In 1841 he came to America with his mother. According to a story, told by him to his children, for some unknown reason, he was not allowed to leave Germany, so his mother smuggled him aboard ship in a trunk. On March 14,1848, Henry appeared in the Court of Common Pleas, Columbiana County, Ohio, and denounced the Duke of Angstadt, and became an American citizen. Between 1866 and 1867, the family moved to Montpelier, Ohio, where he opened a weaving shop, on West Main Street.According to an article that appeared in the Montpelier Leader newspaper, August 20, 1885, " Mr. Echler is probably one of the most skilled weavers in this part of the country, as he can weave carpets of any style and pattern. Coverlets, tablecloths, grain sacks without seams, and has woven a pair of pantaloons without seams, weaving the button holes in, and the buttons on. He wove 3,000 yards of carpet last year. He also has a book on the subject of weaving, that bears the date 1602, almost 300 years old. Mr. Echler says his price for weaving carpet at present is: mixed 10 cents per yard, and striped 12 1/2 cents per yard, and if more than one yard wide, nothing extra." The Lash Cemetery, where Henry and Sarah are buried, is located East of Montpelier, Ohio on State Route 107, on the North side, just West of the intersection of State Route 15, commonly referred to as the "Ace Corners".

Carl was active in the Loyal Order of Moose lodge many years and had earned the Fellowship Degree. Carl was known to most people as Mutt. He received this nickname, as a young man. There was a popular comic strip called "Mutt and Jeff", and when people would see Carl and his brother Harry together, they'd say, "there goes Mutt & Jeff, because they resembled these characters. He worked many years around Montpelier as a carpenter, until his health forced him to seek factory work. He worked for awhile at Winzeler Stamping in Montpelier, then went to Challenge-Cook Bros. in Bryan, where he retired, on medical disability, because of his arthritis. He was very outspoken, and you always knew where you stood with him, because he'd tell you. He loved to grow Vegetables in his garden, and most years, fed the entire neighborhood, until the pain from his arthritis, forced him to give up his garden. He also loved to cook, and most Sundays, and holidays, he prepared and cooked the meal. He was also a die hard democrat.
