Obituary

Wellington Enterprise, 14 Sept 1910 pg 8

Obituary.
John R. Hanley was born in New London township, Huron county, May 4th, 1844, and died at his home in Rochester, Sept. 9th, 1910, aged 66 years, 4 months, and 4 days.

He enlisted in the Civil war as Private, in Co. F. 3d Ohio Cavalry, the 5th day of Sept. 1861; was honorably discharged on the 2d day of July, 1862, on account of sickness. He was married to Hannah C. Walker, July 4th, 1872, and to this union were born four children, one dying when a child, and the other three, one grandchild, with his faithful wife, one sister, daughter-in-law and other relatives are left to mourn for a kind and loving father and husband.

He united with the Freewill Baptist Church, of this place 16 years ago, and has always remained a worker until called from the church militant to the Church triumphant, to a home above, after a short illness of a few weeks duration.

He being a loyal soldier, joined Hamlin Post of Wellington, O., to enjoy the association of the soldier boys, of whom he was so fond, and it was his oft expressed wish that he be laid to rest by their loving hands, and we feel that truly the Church has lost a faithful worker and the soldiers a faithful comrade.

A noble citizen has gone to his faithful and well-earned rest.

The funeral was held in the Baptist church, and the services were in charge of Hamlin Post, G.A.R., Rev. Newton Moore, preaching the sermon. The remains were buried in Rochester Cemetery.

How sad the soul, how urgently
The heartfelt tears arise,
As father, friend and trusted one
Is hid from mortal eyes.

Oh what a wretched world were this,
If death extinguished soul;
If friend could never hope for bliss
Beyond our earthly goal.

Deaths but the freeing of a soul,
From tenement of clay;
Tis but the night that must precede
The dawn of brighter day.

Card of Thanks.
We wish to thank the neighbors, friends, the Hamlin Post and corps, singers and all that so kindly helped us, during the death and burial of our loved husband and father.
