When property first became available very large tracts were purchased, not as homesteads, but as investments. In this particular area of The Ridge a first name was Joseph Stewart, and later Brandenburgh and Snook and French.
Joseph Brandenburgh came from Maryland and Pennsylvania about the same time as Aaron Brandenburgh, who is considered the founder of the Brandenburgh clan in southwest Ohio. He bought the land from the Stewart heirs in 1839. The house which Thomas Scott, Jr., and Esther bought stood back a long lane, and I believe is still there, one of only four of the houses remaining from the days when The Ridge was a farming community.
Another family that owned that place was Joseph and Mary Ann Brown Jameson. Joseph Jameson was Superintendent of the Warren County Infirmary for a number of years and when he left there he came to The Ridge to buy property. The Jameson name will appear again because two of the Jameson daughters married and spent their lives on The Ridge: Kattie Van, who married Robert Bruce Lollar, and Letitia Dow, who married John E. Dunham. The Jamesons sold the property to Rev. D. H. and Elizabeth Sargent and it later belonged to William and Bertha S. Veach who lived there when I was growing up just across the road from them. They did not have children but Mrs. Veach loved to give birthday parties for little girls and every child in the neighborhood could be sure of at least one birthday party each year.
