Families of the "The Ridge" Community of Warren County

The Dilatush Family

Dilatush - The first homestead on the east side of old Rt 48 at the south end. Henry Dilatush came to Ohio in 1837 from New Jersey with his parents, Nicholas and Catalina.

When he grew up he married Eliza Hunt and had three sons, Walter S., Harry and Charley. Although his property did not have a great frontage on the road, it extended far back to the east toward the Little Miami River.

His son Walter S. became a prominent attorney and judge of the Warren County Common Pleas Court . Walter died in 1895 as the result of the firing of a gun on a U.S. battleship upon which he was a guest at the time.

His son Charley went to Idaho where he served as a legislator and county commissioner before going to live near Memphis, Tennessee. There at the age of 90, he was shot and killed while protecting his cook from her enraged husband.

The third son, Harry, became a veterinarian.

In the next generation, Dr. Frank Dilatush was a respected osteopath , who established Lebanon's Dill-Dilatush clinic, which by 1990 had become the Grandview Hospital in Dayton.

Now we come to C. Donald, the last Dilatush to own the family property on The Ridge. As a brilliant young law student he was nominated for Warren County Prosecutor in the summer of 1922 even before he had heard from his State Bar Examinations. He served 18 years as prosecutor. Don , with his wife, the former LaVerne Weis from Maineville, made a show place of the family homestead, which had a colorful story of being one of the oldest houses in Warren County. It is said that the white-clapboarded house encloses the original log cabin. The place is now a horse farm called Hunter's Hill with riding arenas and stables. The sign on the mailbox says "Poverty Ridge," which was the name Don gave the place when he lived there.
