"Word came Friday from the War Department that Lt. Ward
Talcott had been killed in action in France. Lt. Talcott was reported
missing in action on July16 and it was hoped that he might have
been a prisoner of war.
"Widely known in this community, Lt. Talcott entered the armed
forces in January 1934 with the first contingent of older married
men to be called to service. Following his basic training he was
sent to Officers Candidate School at Ft. Benning, Ga., where he
received his commission. . . ."

"The War Department Tuesday notified Mrs. Elden Terry of Oregonia
that her son, Platoon Sgt. Morris Lee Terry, U.S. Marine Corps,
was killed in acton on Iwo Jima March 1. Pltn. Sgt. Terry
had been awarded the coveted Silver Star Medal for "conspicuous
gallantry and intrepidity in action on July 24, 1944" in a
South Pacific battle. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps
shortly after graduating from Lebanon high school where he was
a star athlete. He had been in the South Pacific theater since January
1944. His brother S/Sgt Elmer Terry is with the armed forces
in Germany."
