- “Carlisle Lad Listed As Missing
in Action, Dies in Prison Camp,” Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle,
Thursday, March 19, 1945.
"The joy of just one week ago that came to the Verner Simmons
family at Carlisle following news that their only son, Pfc. Robert
e. Simmons, missing in action since December, had been officially
?ated as a German prisoner of war, turned to tragic sorrow Monday
with receipt of a War Department telegram advising the parents that
he had died February 15 in a prison camp.
The War Department message last Thursday revealing his capture by
the enemy, was closely followed by Monday’s telegram reporting
his death. The communication stated that he died of pneumonia in
a German prison camp. He had been missing in action since December
18 while in combat at the time of the German breakthrough into Belgium.
The family’s last word from him was a Christmas card mailed
December 6.
The 22 year-old Carlisle youth graduated from high school in that
community in 1941 and was employed at N.C.R. in Dayton at the time
of his induction December 8, 1942. He received his training at Camp
Van Dorn, Miss., Shreveport, La., and Camp Maxey, Texas, and left
for overseas duty last October. For a time he was stationed in England
and later saw action on the continent with the 99th Infantry Division.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Eagles Lodge
at Middletown."
