    • "Wayne Soldier Dies In Jap Prison Camp," Raymond Pence obituary, unnamed newspaper dated 8 Jul 1943 on file at the Warren County Genealogical Society.
      "The War Department has notified relatives here of the death of Raymond K. Pence, aged 35, who died in a Japanese Prison Camp in the Philippines on June 16.
      A native of the Waynesville community, Pfc. Pence was the son of the late George and Annella Pence, his mother passing away a year ago just three days after she received notice of her son’s capture by the Japs. He attended Waynesville high school and was employed at Delco Products in Dayton before entering the service.
      Pfc. Pence enlisted in the armed forces in March 1941 and was assigned to coast artillery in the Philippines where he was fighting when the island fortress fell.
      Survivors include his wife, Virginia, a son and a daughter; two brothers, Clifford of Waynesville and Howard of Dayton; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Evans, Lebanon and Mrs. Myra Miller, Franklin."

      "Thank you for acknowledging my mother as a WW II vet. It is nice to see she is being honored for such an important time in her life. She often told us the story of being put on a train with black-out curtains and taken to a secret location to de-code Japanese messages. She was very proud of her job and her role during the war. My sister and I truly appreciate our mother being honored and remembered in this way."

      He recorded the following service information for my grandmother (his step-mother) ...
      He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 347th Harbor Craft Company with the rank of S/Sgt.
      He was inducted at Fort Hayes in Ohio on 17 MAY 1943 at the age of 37 and was discharged at Camp Atterbury in Indiana on 3 OCT 1945.
      He was in the South Pacific and both invasions of the Islands of Leyte and Luzon of the Philippines.
      He was a member of Post 165 American Legion, Miamisburg, Ohio"
