Casualty News During Past Week Blackest In Several Months,"
The Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, Thursday, April 26, 1945
". . . Loses Right
Foot.
The Verner Nicely family of East Second Street learned this week
that their son, Pvt. Donal L. Nicely, until recently a German prisoner
of war, has suffered the loss of his right foot. Their first indication
of the nature of his possible wounds was revealed this week on a
card received from the U. S. Army Hospital Plant and reading: “I
am pleased to inform you that on April 15 your son, Pvt. Donal L.
Nicely, was making normal improvement. Diagnosis: amputation of
right foot.”
Pvt. Nicely was originally reported missing in action on January
1 and the family had no assurance that he was still alive until
two weeks ago when they learned that he had been liberated from
a German prison hospital. . . ."
- "Donal Nicely," obituary, The
Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, Thursday, March 1, 2007, page A-3.
" . . . An Army veteran
of World War II, he was wounded four times by German soldiers during
a battle in a French town on New Yeaer's Day in 19455 and was held
prisoner until he was liberated March 27 the same year.
He was a member of the Dayton Area Chapter of Former Prisoner of
War and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and
the Beterans of Foreign Wars. . . ."
