- "Pfc. Ned Manning Killed in Action;
War Department Notifies Parents Tuesday; Believed on Aluthians,"
obituary, Western Star (Lebanon, Ohio), June 24, 1943.
"Another Warren countian made the supreme sacrifice
for his country recently when a telegram was received Tuesday by
Mr. and Mrs. William C. Manning of Clarksville Rural Route, Washington
Township, from the War Department notifying them that their son
Pfc. Ned Manning has been killed in action on May 29.
Young Manning, 24 years of age, was serving in the Infantry of the
United States Army and is believed to have been in the Aleutian
Islands, possibly on Attu. He enlisted on March 5, 1941, and had
been in the war theater for several months.
A native of Warren County, Manning attended the Clarksville schools
and graduated from Morrow high school. He was associated with his
father on the farm before enlisting in the army.
Besides his parents he leaves a younger brother, Joseph Manning,
at home.
His father, former Warren county dog warden, now guard at the King
Powder Company at Kings Mills is well known throughout the county.
A radio report was circulated this week that James. H. Simpson
of Lebanon was reported killed in action but no confirmation of
the story has been received and neither has anyone by that name
been found in this vicinity."

an Ensign and designated a Naval Aviator. Les served in three different
squadrons and flew in combat missions from aircraft carriers in
Torpedo Bombers (TBF) and fighter planes (F6F) in all three theatres
of operation. He reenrolled in Otterbein in September of 1946 and
was graduated in the Centennial class of 1947 with a BA in Business
Administration and began his career in finance and banking with
Universal CIT credit Corporation. He was recalled to active duty
by the Navy in 1952 and served two years during the Korean Conflict.

"Attached is a photo of Les. I first met Les just after
he had crash landed an F6F fighter plane. He came into the O Club
at NAS Columbus with a bandage on his face. It seems that the propeller
shaft on his plane sheared and he lost the propeller. We both retired
from the Naval Air Reserve about the same time , I think. We retired
at the Naval Air Facility at Selfridge Air Force base, now a Michigan
Air National Guard bse. We were both on the Staff there, I am not
sure what Les's assignment was. I was the Staff Administration Officer
and I still have files of some of the personnel there. You could
not find a more pleasant person than Les. I dont remember if it
was mentioned on your website, One of Les's training partner's in
his Operational Training in Torpedo Bombers was George H W Bush."

The Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, Thursday, April 26, 1945
" . . . Died at Leyte
"Details of the death of Pfc. William E. Montgomery, Franklin
youth who perished at Leyte last October 29, were contained in a
letter received recently by the lad's father, James M. Montgomery,
of Middletown, from his son's commanding officer, Capt. William
P. Davis.
Capt. Davis' letter says, in part: "In all sincerity and on
behalf of his comrades and myself, may I tell you of our deep sorrow
at the loss of your son, William. Letters of condolence are inadequate,
but perhaps you can find some comfort in knowing of our esteem for
him and in some of the details of his passing.
" During the push of Leyte we were attacking an enemy fortified
position. In crossing of the treacherous rice paddies in the area,
several of his comrades were wounded. So many were injured that
it was necessary to ask for volunteers to get them out. William,
with his usual sympathy and courage, was one of the first to offer
to help out. He was helping to carry one of the wounded when a sniper
opened fire on the group. He was wounded and passed away at
once. There was nothing we could do for him except to see that he
was carried back.
"William is resting now in the Army Cemetery at Dulag, Leyte,
and received a full military burial. The cemetery itself is on the
palmed, balmy eastern shore of the island and overlooks the blue
expanse of Leyte Gulf.
"William was a man and a soldier. We miss him personally and
find a gap in the organization difficult to fill. He was always
willing, fine and courageous. I can truthfully say that he was one
of the best-liked men in the company."
"This week, Mr. Montgomery was advised by the Adjutant General's
office that his son has been posthumously awarded the Bronze Star
Medal for heroic achievement in connection with military operations
against the enemy." The award will be presented to the father.
Pfc. Montgomery was inducted December 30, 1942. He had his basic
training at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and was later assigned to the Aleutian
theatre. Since last year he had been in the Pacific and participated
in the Marshall Islands campaign and in several smaller engagements.
He wore the Purple HEart for injuries suffered last May 14.
Pfc. Montgomery graduated from Franklin High School in 1942 and
was employed by the Maxwell Paper Company before entering the service.

him except for the one in Kansas City that was for his entire crew.
Before her death his widow gave me all of his personal effects and
medals that were sent to her by the war dept. after his passing
as she knew I would take care of these items with the respect befitting
this hero. I have quite a collection of Dud's effects from his training
materials to his complete flight record and all the correspondence
from the war department after he went missing.
I am attaching to this mail his picture from the war dept. as well
as a shadow box I made containing his medals and citation of honor
signed by Hap Arnold along with the coffin flag also sent by the
