" . . . After graduating high school in Springdale, he
worked until Pearl Harbor when he joined the Army Air Corps and,
later, the Signal Corps, where his skill with photography served
our country well during WWII.
While training at Chanute Field near Champaign, IL, Frank met the
love of his life, Margaret Ann Gunning. He would fondly recount
to family of the night they first met. He saw her across the dance
floor at the USO wearing a red dress, and he fell in love. Shortly
afterwards, Frank sailed the Queen Mary-converted to a Troop Ship-to
London. Surviving the Blitz and Buzz bombs, Frank was one of our
men developing and printing V-Mail for our soldiers and loved ones.
Frank had postings in Paris, Rome and finally in Post War Berlin,
photographing and developing Nazi papers. . . ."

- "First Shot of Invasion Fired by
Local Marine on Bougainville, " clipping from unknown
paper contributed by Gary
L. Chambers 9 Aug 2012
"The first shell fired when the marines landed at Bougainville
came from a gun on which Pfc. Kenneth Helton of Lebanon was the
gunner. His outfit was the first to set up its guns.
Pfc. Helton wrote to his mother, Mrs. John Conley of Route 1, Lebanon,
that the “Nips were really ready for us when we hit (the beach).”
He added that he has “the Lord to thank that I lived through
it.” Once the marines got a beachhead and swung their guns
into action, they gave the Nips “plenty of hell.”
In addition to facing direct Japanese fire, the marines ducked bombing
and strafing by planes “I tell you,” Helton wrote, “you
really have a funny felling when you lie in your foxhole and hear
the bombs come whistling down.”
He had no sleep the first four or five nights.
What added to the marines troubles was the rain – tropical
deluge – which started coming down when the marines hit the
beach. It was almost no time until they were in the midst of a swamp,
sloshing up to their knees in mud.
After the marines had established a beachhead, the Japs attempted
a landing but were turned back by withering fire.
Pfc. Helton saw lots of Japanese planes shot down, writing “it
sends a chill down your back to see a Jap plane burst into flames
and fall to the ground.”
He heard that his half-brother, John Conley, Jr., of the navy, also
was in the thick of that operation.
His letter written Dec. 30, stated that “While there is one
marine left you can bet your life the Japs will never reach the
states.” At that time, he had not received his Christmas package.
He relates a humorous incident that occurred there. Several marines
were taking a wounded Jap to a hospital when the prisoner taunted:
“You Americans think you are going to win this war, don’t
you?” One of the marines stuck a knife against the Jap’s
ribs and replied, “Yea, and you think you’re going to
the sick bay, too, don’t you!”
Pfc. Helton enlisted in April, 1942, prior to which time he worked
at Wright field.
Mr. and Mrs. Conley have four stars in their service flag –
for Pfc. Helton, for John Conley,
Jr., for Lt. Raymond Conley
and a gold star for Eugene Helton,
who lost his life in an accident several months ago. All four are
graduates of Clearcreek High school in Springboro.”
" Experience Like This Would Shake You, Too
During the action on Bougainville, Pfc. Kenneth Helton's knees quaked
- in fear, but not fear of Japs. That was when there were several
Earthquakes.
He had never expected to get seasick on land, but he did, he told
his parents.
And he added that he was more worried about the volcano than he
was about the Japs."

" DEAD FLYER KNOWN HERE
RCAF Pilot Paul Hemmer Was Graduate of Franklin High.
Sergeant-Pilot Paul G. Hemmer, 27, former Franklin youth and a graduate
of the local high school, died four weeks ago in combat over Egypt,
it was revealed last Saturday in a message to his sister in Cincinnati.
Hemmer died while engaged in combat with Axis forces near Cairo,
it was stated. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
According to the message Hemmer was flying alone in a Hurricane
fighter when he encountered the enemy. It was said that he baled
out when his ship was damaged and descended into the sea. The message,
however, gave August 7 as the date of his death and stated that
he was buried August 9.
Hemmer’s initial training was in Quebec and from there he
went to an elementary flying school at Hamilton, Ont., and then
to advanced training at Donville, Ont. On September 1, 1941, he
left for England and was later assigned to combat duty in Egypt.
As a youth he was well known in Franklin and is remembered by many
here."

- "WOUNDS RECEIVED ON IWO JIMA PROVE FATAL TO LOCAL
MARINE," obituary, Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, Thursday,
April 5, 1945.
"Franklin’s first known fatality coming as a result of
the successful but costly Iwo Jima action of six weeks ago, occurred
March 10, according to a War Department telegram received Easter
Sunday by Mr. and Mrs. John Hollon, of Roberts Avenue, advising
them that their son, Marine Cpl. Nathan B. Hollon, had died of wounds
suffered in action on Iwo Jima.
Additional details of young Hollon’s death were received by
the parents in a letter written by the lad’s uncle, T.
N. Casson, MM1/c, serving with the Seabees in the Marianas
Islands. Casson wrote that Hollon had been removed to a base hospital
in the Marianas following Iwo Jima and that he had visited him on
several occasions.
He found him in good spirits and apparently making satisfactory
recovery, Casson wrote, and early in March plans were being made
to remove Hollon to a recuperation center in Hawaii. On March 9,
Casson reported that his condition was unchanged but that two days
later when he visited the hospital he learned that Hollon had died
suddenly and unexpectedly on the 10th.
The Franklin lad, who was but 20 years of age, enlisted in the Marines
in August, 1942, and trained at Parris Island, New River and Camp
Pendleton before leaving for the South Pacific in January, 1944.
He participated in the Marshall Islands invasion and also took part
in the Saipan and Tinian campaigns for which he received the Presidential
Unit Citation awarded the Fourth Marine Division.
Cpl. Hollon attended Franklin High School and at the time of his
enlistment was employed at the Jeffery Grocery on South Main Street.
His last visit home was in June, 1943.
In addition to his parents he is survived by three brothers, Earl,
John, Jr., and Gordon Lee Hollon; three sisters, Marilyn, Laura
Lou and Joyce Ann Hollon, all at home; and two grandmothers, Mrs.
Laura Hollon, of Franklin, and Mrs. Mary Bush Williams, of Newark,
Ohio.
Another Injured.
Another Franklin Marine, Cpl. Luther
Estridge, was wounded in the Iwo Jima action. This
report was received and carried in the Chronicle two weeks ago.
- “Marine Casualty Is Buried Here Yesterday; Body
of Springboro Man En Route Home,” Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle,
Thursday, January 20, 1949.
"The body of a Franklin Marine, who died of wounds suffered
in action on Iwo Jima fours years ago this spring, was returned
for final burial in Woodhill
Cemetery yesterday, and at the same time a Springboro family
learned that their son, also killed in action in the South Pacific
four years ago, was en route home for burial.
Services here yesterday were for Marine Corporal Nathan B. Hollon
who died March 10, 1945, in a base hospital in the Marianas where
he was recovering from wounds received in the successful but costly
Iwo Jima action six weeks earlier. The services, conducted by the
Rev. H. S. Gessner, were held from the First Baptist Church with
burial being made in Woodhill Cemetery. The Eaton Funeral Home had
charge of arrangements and military services were conducted by Russell
McElfresh Post of the American Legion.
Cpl. Hollon, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Holllon, of Franklin, was
but 20 years of age at the time of his death. He enlisted in the
Marine Corps in August, 1942, and trained at Parris Island, New
River and Camp Pendleton before leaving for the South Pacific in
January, 1944. He participated in the Marshall Islands invasion
and also took part in the Saipan and Tinian campaigns for which
he received the Presidential Unit Citation awarded the Fourth Marine
Division.
Young Hollon attended Franklin High School and at the time of his
enlistment was employed by the Jeffery Grocery on South Main Street.
Surviving are his parents; three brothers, Earl, John Jr., and Gordon
Lee; and three sisters, Marilyn, Laura Lou and Joyce Ann.
Body En Route Home.
Mr. and Mrs. Elmer J. Rider, of near Springboro, received word from
the War Department that the body of their son, Cliff
Rider, Technician Fourth Grade, is en route home for final burial.
Rider was killed in action April 16, 1945, on the Rjukyu Letto Islands.
Funeral services will be held locally in charge of the Unglesby
Funeral Home, of Franklin, but arrangements are still incomplete
and definite announcement will be made later.
Rider attended the Springboro schools and enlisted November 7, 1942,
embarking for the South Pacific from Seattle on August 14, 1944.
As a member of a tank battalion, he took part in the invasions of
Leyette and Okinawa. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge of Franklin.
Surviving are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer J. Rider, who reside
on a farm south of Springboro; two brothers Eugene and William Rider,
or R. R. 1, Franklin; and two sisters, Mrs. Alice Chilton, of Miami
Shores, and Mrs. Eva Brety, of Dayton"

War II Army and Army Air Force Casualites
- Photo: "This Week's Casualty Lists
Include Two Franklin Boys", The
Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle,
Thursday October 12, 1944
"Two Franklin youths, Lt. Jones Charles Hopper
23 and Pfc. Elroy Six, 24, were
included in casualty lists of the past week, both being listed as
killed in action.
Hopper, a Second Lieutenant in the Air Forces, was killed September
7 in China, according to word received last Saturday by his mother,
Mrs. Nelllie Hopper, of Route One, Germantown.
...
On September 17, Major General C. L. Chennault wrote Hopper's mother
in part as follows: "It is with deep regret that I must inform
you that your son, Second Lt. Jones Charles Hopper, was reported
killed in action Sept. 7, 1944. No doubt you have already been informed
by the War Department.
"Lt. Hopper was Bombardier of an airplane engaged in an important
combat mission within enemy territory when his airplane was shot
down by enemy fire. He died instantly and without pain.
"Under all conditions your son exhibited a courage and devotion
to duty which was in keeping with the highest traditions of the
Army Air Forces. He was in every respect a fine officer and a true
American. His record overseas will ever serve as an incentive in
our future operations against the enemy.
"On behalf of the officers and men of the 14th Air Force,
I extend my deepest sympathy. Sincerely yours, C. L. Chennault,
Major General, U. S. A., Commanding."
Second Lt. Jones Charles Hopper, of Route One, Germantown, was killed
in action in China on September 7, according to word received here
Saturday from the War Department.
Lt. Hopper, who had been serving as a bombardier with the Army Air
Forces in China since last June, was a graduate of Franklin High
School in 1939 and was inducted into the armed forces in September,
1942. He was sent to Gowan Field, Boise, Idaho, in the Quartermaster
Division and later to Pueblo, Colo., where he enlisted in the Army
Air Corps. Receiving his basic training at Pendleton Field, Ore.,
Lt. hopper was commissioned a second lieutenant at Victorville,
Calif., one year ago.
At the time of his induction in the service he was attending Otterbein
College. ..."
- "Body of Lt. J. Charles Hopper Is
Returned Home for Burial; Services Here Tomorrow," Franklin
(Ohio) Chronicle, February 3, 1949
" . . . Lieut. Hopper was killed September 7, 1944, while
serving with the 14th Air Force in the India Burma Theatre under
Maj. Gen. C. l. Chennault. While serving as a Bombardier, his plane
was shot down while engaged in a low-lewel flying mission against
enemy shipping on a river near Kiyang, CHina. His plane was originally
hit in one engine by fire from an enemy vessel but completed its
attack before leaving the target area.
Shortly thereafter, however, their plane was attacked by eight Jap
planes and force to the ground from tree-top level, instantly killing
all members of the crew with the exception of the tail gunner. The
approximate site of the crash was fifteen miles southwest of Lingling,
China.
Lieut. Hopper entered the service in September, 1942, while a student
at Otterbein College. Following his induction at Fort Thomas, Ky.,
he was sent to Gowen Field, Boise, Idaho, and later to Pueblo, Colorado,
where he transferred to the Army Air Corps.
He received his basic training at Pendleton Field, Oregon, and in
August, 1843, at the Santa Ana Air Base was awarded special commendation
as a Cadet Flight Lieutenant in the Pre-Flight School, being listed
among the ten highest graduates. Hopper received his commission
and was graduated as a Bombadier with Squadron 3, Class 46-16 at
Victorville, California, on August 30, 1943.
After being stationed for the next five months at Columbia S.C.,
he was sent overseas and attached to the 14th Air Force in the India-Burma
Theatre. . . ."
