to his months spent in German held territory as a prisoner of war
- cold, starving and trading Red Cross chocolate for bread on P.O.W.
marches, his service experience provided much material for the stories
that he would recall throughout his life. . . ."
- 17 Jun 2013 email from John
Everett,
" I knew Bob and am trying to remember the circumstances. I
found his obituary and it confirms he went to OSU as I did. I am
trying to remember if he was a member of my fraternity or a member
of my Naval Air Reserve Unit at NAS Columbus. I think the latter.
I can picture him in his enlisted dungarees. Even though I have
not seen him since about 1950, I am sure the photo is him. It is
not mentioned in his obituary but I distinctly remember his describing
being shot down in a B-17, although I remember it being a B-24.
He was on his second bombing mission over Germany and was a gunner
on the plane. When they were hit, they were ordered to bail out
which he did. He told us he landed near a farm and some farmers
surrounded him brandishing pitchforks and hoes and hand shovels.
He was armed with a Colt 45 and kept the people away from him with
that. He saw a truck coming in the distance that upon arrival dispatched
a squad of soldiers. He put his hands up still holding the 45 untl
the soldiers took it away. They then took him to a prison camp."

". . . Missing
Since April 1
Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Black were advised last Friday
by the War Department that their son, Pfc. William A. Black, has
been missing in action since April 1 in Germany. His latest letter
to his parents was dated March 27.
Pfc. Black has been serving as a motorcycle messenger with a combat
engineer battalion for the past seventeen months. A graduate of
Franklin High School in 1940, he was employed by the Wright Aeronautical
Corp. prior to his induction in 1942. He received his training at
Camp Carson, Colo., before going overseas in October, 1943.
A brother, S2/C Robert T. Black is now in the Pacific. .

- "Military Services Will Be Held Here
Friday For PFC. William A. Black, Killed In Germany," The
Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, June 9, 1949.
"Military Services in charge of Russell McElfresh Post of the
American Legion will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon
at the Unglesby Funeral Home for PFC. William A. Black, who was
reported missing in action in Germany on April 1, 1945. The Rev.
William J. Hannum, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will
officiate and burial will be made in Woodhill Cemetery here. He
is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Black, of Franklin.
" PFC. Black was a bugler with the United States Army, but
for seventeen months prior to his death had served as a messenger,
with a combat engineer battalion. It was while he was acting as
a motorcycle messenger that he lost his life from enemy gunfire
at Kleinenburg, Germany, on April 1, 1945. His parents were notified
of his death on April 20 of the same year.
"While attending Franklin HIgh School, PFC. Black was a member
of the band and applied his talent to become a bugler in the army.
Following his graduation in 1940, he was employed for two years
at the Wright Aeronautical plant prior to his induction in 1942.
He trained for a year at Camp Carson, Colorado, before going overseas
in 1943. When a small child, he was baptized in the First Presbyterian
Church at Franklin.
"An older brother, SSML 3/C Robert T. Black lost his life in
the sinking of the USS Drexler in the South Pacific, twenty miles
from Okinawa, on May 28, 1945.
"PFC. Black is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Black, of Franklin; a sister, MRs. Mary Jane SMith, of Dayton; and
his grandmother, MRs. Olivia Chamberlain, of Franklin.
"The family will receive friends at the funeral home after
two o'clock this afternoon."

- Melvin Bruce, Local Seaman Reported Missing
in Action, The Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, November 11, 1943
"Melvin Bruce, F 2/c, U.S.N.R., was reported
missing in action this week according to word received by his mother,
Mrs. Mayme Bruce Hetzler, of Franklin. Burce, who enlisted
in the Navy November, 1942, is but 17 years old but had been on
active sea duty for the past several months.
"The telegram received by Mrs. Hetzler Wednesday morning read:
"The Navy Department deeply regrets to inform you that your
son , Melvin Bruce, F 2/c is missing in action in the performance
of his duty in the service of his country. Details are not
now available"
"The lad's father, Corp. John Bruce, is serving in the Army
and is now on maneuvers in Louisiana. His paternal grandmother,
Mrs. Martha Bruce, resides on Allen Street."
- Summary
of War Casualties from World War II for Navy, Marine Corps, and
Coast Guard Personnel from Ohio
"Bruce, Cecil Melvin,
Fireman 1c, USNR. Mother, Mrs. Mayme Bruce Hetzler, 527 Anderson
St., Franklin."
- 26 Jan 2011 Bob
Croll email:
"I was in the sixth grade in 1939, and one of my classmates
was Cecil Melvin BRUCE, who lived with his Paternal Grandmother,
Martha BRUCE, in the basement of 527 Anderson Street, Franklin,
Warren, OH. His Mother was Mrs. Henry (Mayme) HETZLER. They were
our milk customers, and I used to collect for my Grandfather, George
Croll, who owned the Miamiview Dairy. Cecil did not like his first
name and always went by Melvin. He was a prankster, and seemed to
always be in trouble with our teacher, Grace L. Klever.
World War II was brewing, and Melvin joined the Navy by lying about
his age. He never graduated from the sixth grade. His Father: Staff
Sgt. John H. BRUCE USA, was missing in action, and I suspect this
was his motivation for volunteering. Melvin came back to school
on leave, in uniform, and told us all about his assignment to a
motor torpedo boat squadron. He said the decks were covered in cork
to absorb the extremely rough ride. Melvin was promoted to fireman
Ist class and assigned to the USS Beatty when America entered the
war.
Melvin was killed 6 Nov 1943, when his ship was sunk off the coast
of Algeria. He was the first one of my Classmates to be killed in
WWII. I graduated from Franklin High School, Class of 1945, and
was drafted shortly thereafter. I was sent by bus to Fort Hayes
in Columbus, Franklin, OH, and then by train to Camp Atterbury,
Indiana, where I was rejected for somnambulism, and I had to get
a dictionary to determine what was wrong with me. There were 66
people in our graduating class, and at least 35 have now joined
Melvin, 66 years later.
