"Arch K. Hall, veteran of the World War and a member of Company
E which was recruited from Lebanon and vicinity, died at his
home here at 10 a.m. last Saturday, Jan. 1. He was 29 years old
and has been afflicted with paresis for the last two years, which
was probably brought on by injuries and gassing during the war.
He is survived by his wife, monther, two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services were held at the Main Street Presbyterian church,
Tuesday, January 4 at 2 p.m., with the Rev. J. H. Lamy officiating.
Miss Esther Wolcott gave a vocal solo, accompanied at the organ
by Mrs. E. J. Steddom. The Ralph P. Snook Post of the American Legion
attended in uniform and assisted in the service at the cemetery.
He was buried in the Lebanon Cemetery."

". . . General Harding was graduated from West Point in
1909 and was then commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U. S.
Infantry.
". . . He was called back to West Point in 1916 as an instructor
in history, and was on duty there at the outbreak of World War I.
But the young Army officer was not released from his duty at the
academy until July, 1918, and did not go overseas until after the
Armistice was signed later that year.
" . . . In February, 1942, he was made a major general and
placed in command of the 32nd Infantry Division. He took this division
to Australia in 1942 and from there through the early phases of
its first campaign in New Guinea, know as the Buna campaign.

(Ohio) Chronicle, Thursday, December 20, 1934
. . . He enlisted in the U. S. A. Marine Corps at Dayton, Ohio,
June 22, 1917. On August 17, 1917, he won distinction as a First
Class Rifleman and was promoted to Corporal on October 15, 1918.
He was among the first American troops sent over seas and served
in the A. E. F. in France from February 5, 1918, to December 13,
1918. He was with the Army of Occupation in Germany from December
13, 1918, to July 4, 191. He then returned to France were he remained
with the A. E. F. until July 25, 1919.
With the U. S. Marines, he was always in the thick of the fighting,
participating in battles, engagements, skirmishes and expeditions.
He saw active service in the Toulon Sector, Verdun, the Alane Defensive,
Chateau-Thierry Sector, Marbache Sector, St. Michiel Offensive and
Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
Capt. J. P. Adams in charge of the Marines certified Corporal Hartzell
for “Very good military efficiency, fine obedience and excellent
sobriety.” He was recommended for re-enlistment and reappointed
to rank and received the Marine Good Conduct Medal. He was also
awarded the Purple Heart and the Croix de Guerre, but he seldom
wore his medals.
After being mustered out of the army he returned to Franklin and
was active in organizing Russell McElfresh Post, American Legion.
He was elected the first commander of the Post. . . ."

French Alps but at the close of the war he chose to return hom to
America instead of taking a commission to serve in the Army of Occupation
