"Joseph Collins never married.
He became a beloved father figure to all of the family after his
father died in 1938, always lending a helping hand (or home if necessary)
any time a family member fell on hard times. My favorite memory
of him was in 1959, when my mother Elizabeth (known as "Libby"
to the family) took our "Uncle Joe", my sister Diane,
and me on a car trip. First stop was in Chicago to visit his nephew
Jerry Collins (son of Joe's younger brother Charley) a career Marine
stationed temporarily in Chicago, then by ferry across to Canada
where we rented cabins on Wasaga Beach, and eventually on to Niagara
Falls. One night at the beach cabin he was discussing growing older
(he was 71 at the time) and said the one thing he was really proud
of was the he still had every last one of his teeth. As a young
girl of 13, I though this was really cool. He died 2 days after
Christmas in 1971 at the age of 83."
