"Lt. Col. Terry Turner, 70, of Concord, Pa., a retired
Marine Corps officer, died Aug. 21 at the Hospital of the University
of Pennsylvania.
"Born in Morrow to the late Halen and George Schleehauf, he
was the adoptive son of the late Cecil H. and Lois Purdy Turner
of Cascade, Mich.
"A career Marine Corps officer of 21 years, he entered the
Corps in 1956. While a Captain, he was placed in command of Delta
Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. After brief service on the
island of Okinawa, Japan, he was deployed to Danang, Vietnam in
1964.
His company was the first to engage the Viet Cong in the earliest
recorded hostilities of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the first
of three Bronze Stars with Combat "V" in the field, and
also the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with palm.
"After a three-year stint as Marine officer instructor and
associate professor of Naval Science at Notre Dame University -
where he was was also one of the first Corps parachutists to test
the Parafoil in manned ascending flight, he returned to Vietnam
for a second tour of duty in 1969. He was second in command of one
of the Marine Corps' most elite combat units, which later received
the Presidential Unit Citation. He completed his career in the Msrines
as Instpector-Instructor, 4th ANGLICO and Senior Marine Officer
in Miami. . . ."
