" . . . Tom went into the army in 1969 and did his basic
training at Ft. Jackson and AIT at Fort Knox. He received orders
from Vietnam and was stations at Duc Pho. Tom was promoted to Battalion
Motor Sargent, then ordered to move to KHE Sanh the DMZ in support
of Lam Son 719. He encountered a lot of enemy activity at Khe Sanh.
He was then ordered back to Duc Pho for the remainder of his time
in the country. Tom was elected Commander of Joe Barr Post 194 from
2001-2004, was elected Trustee of VFW Post 9622 from 2005-2008,
and he returned to the American Legion as Treasurer and Bar Chairman.
Tom received the Bronze Star for his service in Lam Son 719. . .

" One of Franklin's native sons, United States Army Specialist
Four Charles Keith Day was killed in Vietnam early Saturday morning.
The 20 year old soldier's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Day of 423
South Avenue in Franklin and his wife, Cathy Lackens Day of 805
South Main Street in Springboro learned of Day's death Monday morning
at 9:30.
The youth's death occurred in action, it was learned, but that was
the only fact available. There were no details as of press time
Wednesday. The parents did not even know where young Day's death
had occurred.
The soldier was born in Franklin and had graduated from Franklin
High School in 1966. Before being drafted into the Army, Day had
been employed by Frigidaire in Dayton.
Keith and Cathy were married just prior to his departure fro Vietnam.
Day's two year hitch would have expired this November. He had served
seven months in Vietnam and was scheduled to return home in June.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Unglesby Funeral Home. Additionally,
it is also known that a burial with military honors is planned."
