"He gave his life in a fire on the U.S.S. Enterprise 70
miles south of Hawaii. On Jan. 14, 1969, 26 others also perished."
- Photo: "Dies Aboard Navy's 'Big E'
", The Franklin (Ohio) Chronicle, Thursday January
23, 1969
"One of 25 men killed aboard the nuclear carrier USS Enterprise
last Tuesday, January 14, was 21 year-old Navy Airman David Asbury
of Franklin.
Asbury was reported to have been one of the ship's
crewmembers on the flight deck when a series of explosions ripped
through the aft section of the largest of U.S. Navy ships.
Funeral services with full military honors will be Thursday afternoon
at the Eaton Funeral Home, beginning at 2:00 o'clock. Interment
will be made in Springboro Cemetery.
The youn man, whose wife, the former Rita Jean Holsinger and four
month old daughter, Tracy Ann, are living with her parents at 111
Normal Drive, had just returned to duty in December after a two-week
Christmas leave.
Asbury had been aboard the Enterprise since he completed training
at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center near Chicago.
David had attended Springboro High School before enlisting in the
Navy almost two years ago, February 25, 1967. That would make his
service time on the carrier about 1 1/2 years.
The airman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Asbury of Celina.
Besides his wife, daughter and parents, David is survived by six
brothers, George, Jr., of Middletown, Wilbur of Dayton, Clarence,
John, Jacob and Ronald, all at home in Celina; five sisters, Mrs.
Kathryn Houtz of Dayton, Mrs. Dorothy Esposito of Somerville, Mrs.
Susie Massingale of Dayton, and Rebecca and Naomi, both at home
in Celina.
Born in Dayton, Asbury was killed just three days after the death
the previous Saturday morning of Army Specialist Four Charles Keith
Day of Franklin in Vietnam.
The fire and series of explosions that killed Asbury swept over
about 250 feet of the Big E's aft flight deck, destroying 15 planes
loaded with bombs and rockets.
