" . . . Col. Gravenstine enlisted in the Army Air Corps through
an aviation cadet training program offered at Wright Air Force Base
in Dayton. He had combat duty in the European Theater of Operations
during World War II, making 119 combat missions over Italy and the
south of France. He trained a combat crew during the Korean and
Vietnam wars, he held two positions on the Air Staff in the Pentagon
and a third with the U.S. Air Force in Europe, stationed in Germany.
In 1968, he assumed his duties as deputy commander of the 504th
Tactical Air Support Group in Vietnam, logging 200 combat hours
in forward tactical control aircraft. Col. Gravenstine flew between
250 and 300 combat hours over all areas of Vietnam. While in Wiesbaden,
Germany he coordinated the entourage of President John F. Kennedy
to Germany. He retired in 1971 with the rating of a Command Pilot
and the rank of colonel.
Among the more than 16 awards and decorations he received were the
Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster,
the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal
with eight oak leeaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal and
the Vietnamese Staff Honor Medal First Class. . . ."
