- Mary
Lou Reed writes on 30 Sep 2007,
"My Great grandfather Ferdinand M. Malone (from Capleville,
TN) studied at National Normal University during the summer of 1887.
I have three letters he wrote home telling the family about his
experiences and describing the college. He even mentions seeing
Alfred Holbrook and hearing him speak.
Ferdinand Malone taught for a year at Woodland Academy in Saulsbury,
Tennessee. After the end of the spring term in 1887, Ferdinand became
a student again at National Normal University in Lebanon, Ohio.
Much of Ferdie’s free time while in Lebanon was spent corresponding
with his siblings and people back home. In a letter to his youngest
sister, Callie, he reminded her “to keep
all my letters”.

Ferdie returned home after his summer

- Matilda Mason, Jackson Twp, Wells County, Indiana
(1843-1864)
- Contributed by Jean
M. James of Olympia, Washington on 10 May 2004
"MATILDA MASON,
my great aunt, was a student at NNU. Matilda Mason
was the third child and one of thirteen children born to Thomas
Mason and his wife, Harriet (Dixon) Mason. Her
birth occurred 15 July 1843 in Jackson Twp., Wells County, Indiana.
Because her mother, Harriet (Dixon) Mason, had a sister, Lydia
(Dixon) Turner, residing in Lebanon, Ohio, Matilda's parents
enrolled her at National Normal University, probably about 1862
and she lived with James & Lydia (Dixon) Turner
while there. In January, 1864, Matilda contracted a cold which became
increasingly worse. Her Aunt Lydia put her in a stage and sent her
home to Wells Co., IN where she died a few days later.
My grandfather described her illness as a bad cold for which her
aunt gave improper treatment resulting in inflammatory rheumatism.
Apparently she was given steam baths, etc. Anyway, her parents felt
she had received improper care which resulted in her death.. Matilda
Mason died 25 January 1864."
The 1880 census showing James & Lydia
Turner, residents of Lebanon, OH, also includes three
students who were rooming with them. They are Walter S.
Calahan, age 23 born VA; Joseph M. Ickeng,
age 22 born OH; Augustus Ashmonte, age 23 born
OH. I assume they were students at NNU because of their ages.
The above James & Lydia (Dixon) Turner were
related to me as my great grandmother was Harriet (Dixon)
Mason, mother of Matilda Mason, a student
at NNU"

He also mentions a favorite teacher of his, Mr W.D.

to around 1863. Henkle taught Mathematics courses at NNU—
from Mendenhall’s notes it looks like he published a popular

which was used around the country at that time. After resigning
from NNU, Henkle went on to become the Ohio state school commissioner
