"Educated at Lebanon Normal and was off
teaching by age 20 (born 1859 in Ashland, KY). Moved to the Montana
Territory in 1887 where he was a teacher, school administrator,
and lawyer by profession. He represented District 11 (Jefferson
County, MT) in 1889 at the Montana Constitutional Convention in
Helena. Had two substantial motions during the proceedings, but
is unofficially credited with having written a significant portion
of the document. Clearly a member of Free Masonry. Married with
two children, one girl and one boy.
"Had two published biographies. One from the late nineteenth
century, and another in the early twentieth century. The group of
men who represented the Montana Territory at the 1889 Constitutional
Convention were prominently featured in a completely irresponsible
1989 publication where the group was referred to as the "Floundering
Fathers." The author of the chapter recounting the proceedings
of the convention admitted that there is no evidence linking Robert
E. Hammond to any of the bigoted remarks made by others in attendance
at the convention, where such behavior served as inspiration for
the book chapter.
"Died 1931 in Washington state."

Robert Houston
Mabel Todd was born 27 June 1872 in Hogan Township, Dearborn
County, Indiana the eldest of the ten children of John Alexander
and Ellen Welhoff Todd. Mabel and two of her sisters and a brother
became teachers. She attended nearby Moores Hill College and National
Normal University in Lebanon, Ohio and taught school from 1892 to
1897 in Wilmington, Dillsboro and Greendale, all in Dearborn County.
She attended NNU for sure in 1894, probably in 1892, and possibly
at other times about then. Greendale was a two-teacher school where
she taught the younger children and the other teacher (and principal),
Frank Lee Houston taught the older children. She stopped teaching
in 1897 when she married Frank. In 1900 they moved to a farm near
Chesterville, Indiana where they lived the rest of their lives.
Frank died in 1954 at age 85 and Mabel died at age 97 in 1970. Two
of their three sons would also become teachers, my father, Harold
Todd Houston, a professor of Engineering at Evansville University
and Herschel W. Houston, a teacher and high school principal in
Richmond, Indiana.

Hughes, Marguerite S. B.A. '92 , Lee,
O. Married Charles R. Harmon
- from Kathryn
Porter of Victoria, BC Canada on 22 Oct 2006,
"My grandmother attended the National Normal University,
probably from 1885-1889. I suggest those years because she was teaching
her younger sister in first grade in 1890. Her name was Marguerite
Susan Hughes and she came from Bradford. Ohio..Whether she was known
as Marguerite or Susan, I am not certain. She later married Rev.
Charles R. Harmon, a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church
in Bradford.
In later years she lived in Xenia with her daughter and family,
and I recall that she visited a former classmate in Lebanon, a Mrs.
Eaton who had a son confined to an iron lung because of infantile
paralysis. This must have been in the late thirties or early forties."
