Augustus Eddy Mulford (1838-1916)

Augustus E. Mulford
Augustus Eddy Mulford, was the son of John and Margaret McCarty Mulford, and was born at Venice, Butler County, Ohio, January 21, 1838. When he was five year of age, his parents moved to what is now known as Valley View farm where the family seven in number, grew to manhood and womanhood.

When Company A of the 35th O. V. I. was organized, Ed Mulford answered the call and gave three years of hard service to his country. His comrades who knew him well, have always spoken of him as a fine soldier, ready for any duty that fell to his lot.

On March 8, 1865, he was happily married to Rachel Villars of near Clarksville; three children blessed this union, Cora (Mrs. Charles Dumford, now deceased), James V. and Raymond. Their home was broken by her death September 21, 1888.

In 1890 Mr. Mulford was again married to Maria Peacock of Blanchester, who now mourns the loss of a kind husband. Their four children are Hilda, now Mrs. Alonzo Ruckman, Gilbert, Harry and Cedric. Nine grand children complete his immediate family.

Shortly after his first marriage he purchased and moved on the farm adjoining his father’s home where he spent the remainder of his life – a period of more than fifty years.

Uncle Ed, as he has been known by two generations of children who have grown up near his home, was kindly to all with whom he came in contact and was always ready to lend a helping hand when he could be of service.

His death occurred early Sunday morning, October 8, 1916, and marks the going out of the last of the old residents from Shaker Hill neighborhood.
