Angel of Death Calls At Union
Village
For Third Time In Three
Months
The angel of Death has again entered the Shaker settlement at Union Village and this being the third death in nearly the past three months, it comes now as a reminder of what has often been said (when Warren County was last March shocked to learn the the Eastern Shakers were taking legal action for questionable motives to confiscate this valuable property) that the unnecessary and unwarranted controversy would hasten the death of many of the aged people and necessarily engender a hatred for the Eastern officials that would be measureless, inextinguishable and implacable. This is today shown by the freshly-made mounds in the Shaker plot in the Lebanon cemetery, a mute protest again Eastern injustice.
Julius Meyers was born near Berlin, Germany, November 9, 1832, emigrated
to America in 1854 and spent some years in the state of Alabama where
he was employed in the iron working industry which was his trade. At the
breaking out of the Civil War he went to Rock Island, Illinois, where
he worked in the U. S. Arsenal. He united with the Shaker Society at Union
Village in 1874, and continued a member till the time of his death.
