GENERAL DURBIN WARD'S EARTHLY BATTLES ENDED.

LEBANON,O., May 22- General Durbin Ward died this afternoon at a quarter before 3 o'clock.
He did not recover consciousness, and from 12 o'clock yesterday till the end came to-day there was a tremendous struggle between the gray-haired old veteran and the enemy that conquered him at last.
This sad news will be received with profound regret, not only at his home here and all over the State, but throughout the United States, for he had a National reputation as a distinguished soldier of the war, and one of the ablest leaders in the Democratic party.
General Ward's illness dates back to about seven or eight weeks ago, when he returned from Columbus, where he attended a meeting of the Ohio Bar Association. He arrived home on Friday and complained of rheumatism, and was taking quinine for it.
On Sunday Dr. E.B. Stevens was called and has been his physician ever since. The Doctor found his patient suffering from a rheumatic attack and treated accordingly.
The General seemed to be gradually i mproving until last Thursday evening when he took a serious relapse. He was able a few days before that to walk out on the yard and sat up in a chair as laste as Thursday evening, but before he retired he remarked to Mrs. Ward that he felt tired and said he guessed he would go to bed. About 10 o'clock he awoke with a severe vomiting spell, and Mrs. Ward soon said that his mind was wandering. He talked ...
