JOHN D. HAMER, merchant, Pleasant Plain; dealer in hardware, tinware, stoves, clocks, watches, jewelry, harness, pumps, and agent for Porter & Co’s sheet iron roofing; was born in Deerfield, this county, Nov. 13, 1833. Being of an ingenious turn of mind, he worked at and learned the tinner trade; since he has also worked at the silversmith and artist’s trades. In all these various branches of trade he seemed to excel and succeed. When the late war commenced, he enlisted in Company G, 89th O. I. and served through the war. His regiment was attached to the 14th Corps, and he followed it through its various successes at Lebanon, Stone River, Mission Ridge, Chickamauga, and through the Atlanta campaign. Mr. Hamer has traveled extensively in various sections of the union; he went to California in 1870, remaining there for seven years, but the love for his old home grew so strong that he returned. In Oct. 9, 1878, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Phebe Draper, nee Mounts. He carries a well selected stock of goods, and is commanding a good trade. His father is a native of Virginia; he was a miller by trade, and run a mill for forty years, near where the subject of this sketch was born. He married Miss Lucinda Shawshan [sic?], a native of Wayne Co., Ohio.

Harrison F Hamer
I had read your Biographies with Warren County Connections article about John D. Hamer. My forefathers were from Va. (Now WV) and I also notice that you say John Hamer father was from Va. Do you have any other information? Are you a descendent of John Hamer? Is it possible that the name could have been spelled "Hammer"?

My GGgrandfather was a Augustus W. Hamer, b 1817 and d 1896.. He changed the name from Hammer to Hamer, but some of his children continued with the name Hammer. His first wife was Nancy Ann Bunner, b 1815 and d 1853. Augustus W. father was a John Peter Hammer, b 1757 and Augustus was his son from his second marriage to Sarah Pierce (Pearce). John Peter's first wife was Elizbeth Bonser White and they had a son, John Hammer b 1792. After John Peter's first wife died in 1797 John Peter moved to Va, where he lived the rest of his life. Very briefly this will give some of my source information in hopes that maybe there is a connection.

As a trivia fact, Augustus's youngest son by his first wife was a Francis Augustus Hamer and he was the father of Capt Frank Hamer of the Texas Rangers. He was the one that tracked down Bonnie and Clyde which led to the ambush in Louisiana in 1934.

I have a lot of other info I can provide but just wanted to see if there is a relationship or not.

29 Dec 2008 Arne H Trelvik The name is spelled as John D. Harner in various other records found.  His wife was Mrs. Phebe Raper, widow of James M. Raper.
