Oldest child of the 10 children of William and Mary Ann Hellawell Richards. William was very prominent in the iron industry in Trumbull County during the 1860s and 1870s, owing among others, the Girard Iron Company with Gov. David Tod, William Ward and Joseph G. Butler Jr.
