LEBOLD, NORRIS, SMELTZ posted by Hallie on Wednesday, August 14, 2002
I found the bio below on line for Martin Smeltz. It lists his father as Peter Smeltz. I would like to know who this Peter Smeltz is as I have the naturalization application papers for Lewis Smeltz, my second great grandfather and a Peter Smeltz says that Lewis has lived in America x amount of years and he came from Hesse Darmstad. A Peter Smeltz on the same page also makes application to be a citizen. The date is June Term A. D. 1839 Lewis had a son Peter Smeltz, who m Nancy Norris in Carroll County, Ohio, they had a son Charles Grant Smeltz, my grandfather. VENICE TOWNSHIP, Seneca County, Ohio MARTIN SMELTZ is a son of Peter Smeltz who came from Germany and settled in Pennsylvania when our subject was only seven years old. Peter Smeltz afterward moved to Carroll County, Ohio, and settled on a farm where Martin grew to manhood. He, Martin Smeltz, was among the early settlers of this county where he followed the occupation of farming. He was married to Christiana Lebold and reared a family of eight children Any help would be appreciated and I would be happy to share. BERGSTRESSER, DEISINGER posted by Pat Bergstresser on Wednesday, August 28, 2002
Am looking for proof that William J. BERGSTRESSER was son of Christian & Barbara Deisinger Bergstresser. Christian & Barbara are buried in St. Jacob's Cemetery in Adams Township. William & Margaret are buried in Pleasant Union-Dukes Cemetery, Pleasant Township. William & Margaret Louer were married in Seneca County, Ohio, 9/29/1842. According to 1850 census William was born in New York. Based on his age at death I have determined he was born in July 1819. Christian, born PA, spent 31 years in NY and 6 years in Ohio. I have Christian on tax rolls of Ontario County, New York, 1819. I have found Christian on all census records from 1810-1840. The 1820-1840 records have a male child of the correct age for William. I have an obit for Christian, who died 6/10/1845, but it does not list survivors. Barbara, his widow, died 1/8/1870, but have found no obit for her although she supposedly is on the mortality schedule of 1870. Does anyone have access to will records? Christian's might provide the best info as William died before Barbara, however there might be a mention of William's family in hers. I'm in Florida and a trip to Ohio is out of the question at this time. Thanks for any help provided.

BOOS, STOFER, STOVER posted by Susan on Tuesday, September 10, 2002
I have been researching the STover surname for sometime, but recently found some records for Seneca Co., with the surname Stofer. I also find that in my ancestor's obit her maiden name was spelled Stofer where in other records it appears as Stover. Her first name was Lena and she married David Boos. The year would be about 1865 when they married ... maybe a few years later. If anyone is researching those surnames please contact me I am happy to share what I have thus far.

My daughter is researching our family for school. One of the old documents that we have is a naturalization record for my great grandfather. The record has no number, but the date on it is 27th of July 1878. I will be happy to send you an image of it. The question. The document we have has the last name of Stahr, Stehn, Steln. Our last name is Starr. Somewhere the name was changed. Folklore is that he left Alsace Germany due to the French German war or 1872, the name change has always been associated with this move.
