STROKE FATAL TO LOUIS SCHNEIDER; RETIRED FARMER
FUNERAL SERVICES OF LONGTIME RESIDENT WILL BE HELD MONDAY
(Newspaper information not given with submission)
A stroke which he suffered a few days ago resulted
fatally for Louis Schneider, Euclid Avenue, retired farmer and long
time resident of this vicinity, who passed away at the family home this
morning.
Mr. Schneider was born in Germany and came to this country when a child
of three years, spending his younger days at the home of a cousin in
DeBuque, Iowa, and when a young man came to Ohio and settled in the
vicinity of Frank, where until nine years ago, he was successfully
engaged as a farmer. Nine years ago, Mr. Schneider retired from active
work and took up residence in Bellevue proper, where he spent his last
days.
The circumstance that surrounded the passage of Mr. Schneider and
others of the family was composed of the mother and eight children,
across the Atlantic was anything but pleasant. The boat on which they
were passengers was shipwrecked off the coast of Carolina. To add to
the troubles of the passengers cholera broke out and the mother was one
of the victims. The family of eight children, the eldest of whom was
seventeen, was this left in a strange country far away from their
native land, but like the sturdy stock fro m which they sprang, they
surmounted their difficulties.
Mr. Schneider was united in marriage to Miss Barbara Matheis, the widow
who survives, in 1875 and to them were born 10 children, 5 sons and 5
daughters, all of whom survive and were at his bedside wh en be
breathed his last. Thirty-five grandchildren also survive.
The children are: John, Louis M., Charles and Leo Schneider, of Frank;
Joseph, at home, Mrs. Jacob Dick, of Frank, Miss Anna Schneider, of
Bellevue, Mrs. Charles Mack and Mrs. Harry Romer, of Lorain, Mrs. E.J.
Hepp, of Lakewood.
He was a kind and loving husband and father, ever thoughtful of his
family, neighbors and friends and his passing will be mourned by all
who were included within the circle of his acquaintance.
When a child he was christened in the Catholic church and has remained
a faithful member of that faith throughout life, being a member of the
Immaculate Conception congregation during his residence in Bellevue.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9:30 from the
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Re. F.A. Terwood officating.

When Philip Seifert, a well known pioneer resident
of Union Street, arose Monday morning, he found his aged life partner
lying on the floor of a room at his home. Investigation revealed that
Mrs. Seifert was still alive, but before medical aid could be summoned,
she expired; heart trouble being the cause of death. The deceased had
been in her usual good health up to the time of retiring Sunday evening.
Mrs. Seifert, born Thiery, was born in Germany 77 years ago and came to
America in 1847, settling with her parents in Seneca Township. On
February 20, 1850, she was married to her grief-stricken husband, in
New Riegel. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in
this city last February, at which time the Advertiser published an
extended biographical sketch of the highly respected couple. Eight

With a Winchester Rifle
Joseph Shirkey , of Linden, Ends HIs Life--was a Higly Respected
resident
The residents in the vicinity of Linden, a small
station on the Pennsylvania line, seven and one-half miles northwest of
this city, are terribly wrought up over the suicide of Joseph Shirkey,
one of the odest and most highly respected farmers of that vicinity.
As was jos isual custom, Mr. Shirkey got up at an
early hour Friday going to the barn to feed the stock. before he had
finished this work, however he returned to the house, and wouthout a
word, went upstairs, where he took a Winchester rifle and shot himself
through the head. Members of the family at once rushed to him and found
his lifeless body lying on the floor.
It is thought that the unfortunate man became
suddenly demented, as he has been subject to melancholy spells since a
severe attack of paralysis, which he experienced a year or more ago,
and it is reported that on one other occasion, he tried to kill himself
with a butcher knife, but was prevented by members of his family.
The sad occurrence has cause universal regret in
that community, as Mr. Shirkey was looked upon as one of its best and
most substantial citizens. He was aged about sixty-five years and
leaves a widow and seven grown up children. He lived in that vicinity
over forty years.

The funeral of Joseph Shirkey, Linden who committed suicide Friday by
shooting himself, was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The
Advertiser was misinformed as to the weapon used by him. Instead of
shooting himself through the head with a rifle, he shot himself through
the heart with a revolver.

Jacob Vogt, a prominent and wealthy farmer from Venice Township, Seneca Co, was found on Wednesday afternoon last week in woods near his home hanging from a tree. It is believed that he sought to kill himself and that the rash deed was carried out during the night. For about two years Vogt had had a large quantity of grain stored up in Republic for which the price had fallen, and over which he had worried so much that he had become deranged. He was around sixty years old and left behind grown children.

Frank Walters a young married man aged about twenty-six years and residing west of Fort Seneca, died last Friday and was buried on Sunday. Son of John W. and Susan Catherine (McDonald) Walters.
Obituary Jan. 15, 1899
John W. Walters was born in Baden, Germany, Oct.
30, 1823, aged 75 years, 2 months, and 15 days. In 1832, he accompanied
his parents to this country. When Sandusky was reached, cholera was
raging in the then small town and to this dread disease the subject of
our sketch was exposed, but with all this staring them in the face, the
Walters family loaded their small amount of furniture and provisions on
a wagon and started for their new home, which was to be what is now
known as the John M. Shaull? farm in Hopewell twp., this county. Hardly
half the distance was made when young Walter's mother was seized with
the dread malady and died, but the family still pressed onward and
entered their new home.
In a few yeas his father died and young Walters was put out among
strangers, but all this did not discourage him, for he lived to grow to
manhood and , in September, 1849, he married Susan Catherine McDonald,
with whom he lived until his death, or within a few months of 50 years.
To this union were born four children, ten grandchildren and fourteen
great grandchildren- Mary, wife of David Nighswander, living on the old
home farm: Ellen, wife of Oscar McClintock, residing in Oklahoma, John,
deceased, was killed by a log falling upon him. Frank the youngest boy,
died in January 1890.
Mr. Walters joined the C.? B. church of Olive Branch, and was a
constant member of the denomination until it ceased to be a church,
which was about 1877. From there he was transferred to the M.E. church
in Ft. Seneca, of which he has since been a member and always attended
whenever his health would permit.
In August 1861, he enlisted in the 165th O.V. of the civil war, where
he performed his duty as a good soldier until his discharge in 1863.
He had lived upon the farm where he died for forty years and
transformed it from a wilderness into a nice fertile farm.
The aged wife and mother has the sympathy of friend and neighbors, and
all will join in to make life for her as pleasant as possible.
Ft. Seneca News
John Walters, Jr. was killed Monday last by the falling of a log upon him. He was on the log, driving the team, when one of the wheels struck a stump, turning the wagon and throwing him off, and the log rolled upon him. He died before he could be removed from under the log.

Awful Accident
Our citizens were startled on yesterday afternoon by the painful intelligence that their esteemed neighbor and fellow citizen, Judge John ZIMMERMAN, and a youth, aged about 14, were both buried beneath a bank of sand, a short distance south east of the city. Upon repairing to the spot, they found but too sad a reality!
It appears that the Judge had been hauling sand, and proceeded to the bank immediately after dinner. The boy and himself descended the pit, and whilst engaged in digging, a portion of the bank caved away and fell upon them; burying them about four feet beneath the surface.
There was no one present at the time of the
occurrence, nor for several hours afterwards. An individial enganed in
a cornfield in the vicinity, observing the team standing unemployed at
the bank for several hours, proceeded to the spot to ascertain the
cause, and discovered that the bank had caved in, and immediately gave
the alarm.
The Judge leaves a large family to mourn his sudden
and untimely departure. He was much esteemed as an honest and upright
man, and at the time of his death, was one of the Associate Judges of
this county. He was formerly a citizen of Frederick county, Maryland.

Melancholy Occurrence
We are sorry, truly sorry, that it becomes our painful duty to announce the death of our very worthy and much esteemed fellow citizen, John Zimmerman, Esq., as well as that of a German boy in his employ. They came to their deaths in the following manner: They were digging sand, and (accidentally, as we suppose,) the bank which they had undermined, caved in upon them, killing them instantaneously.
The death of Mr. Zimmerman will be much regretted by our citizens. He ranked amongst our earliest settlers, and was much esteemed for his integrity of purpose and uprightness of character, by all who knew him. He was one of our Associate Judges for the Court of Common Pleas of this county, and his death will fall heavily upon his associates upon the Bench, as well as on the members of the Bar. 'Peace to his ashes;' life's fitful fever is over, and we trust he sleeps well.
