Sarah Maria (Brooks) German

Bellevue Gazette
12-7-1911 p. 7 col.1

In the dawning of the Sabbath day, Dec. 3, 1911, the sweet, gentle spirit of Mariah [sp] German, wife of Silas German, departed to enter upon a larger life in the great beyond, aged 69 years 2 months and 22 days. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Jenkins on Center street in this city. She was born Sept. 11, 1842 near Tiffin, and was married to Silas German, May 27, 1865. Upon a farm in Groton township they spent a happy and prosperous married life.
She leaves to mourn their loss, her devoted husband, two sons, Jay and Bert, residing upon the home farm; two daughters, Mrs. A. Clemmens [sp]. of Lorain; Mrs. Chas. Jenkins, of Bellevue. A stepson and stepdaughter, Scott German of Groton township, and Mrs. Robert Waldon, of Kenosha, Wis; two brothers and one sister, Samuel Brooks, of Melmore, O., William Brooks, of Edison, O., Mrs. Rebecca Leech, of Tiffin and sixteen grandchildren. One son and one daughter passed on before Grant, who died July 6, 1906, and Ervie, Aug. 22, 1906.
When this quiet, beautiful, useful life came to a close, we said of her, she is dead. Then we hear a voice saying, "Though he were dead, yet shall he live," and "Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die, " and we are comforted in believing that she will still live on in the lives of her family and her many friends; that the atmosphere of hospitality, kindness and good will in which she lived will leave its impress upon every life that came in touch with hers. She has gone, but she has left an imperishable priceless legacy to her children, the example and influence of a well ordered, consistent christian life.
Till we meet her in the land that lies beyond the Great Divide, we needs must say, our lives are better from the life she lived and richer for the legacy she left.
Mrs. German was attacked with bronchial pneumonia while on a visit at the home of her daughter, Mrs Chas. Jenkins, about three weeks ago, and although the tenderest care was given, and the best medical skill employed, it proved unavailing to restore her health. In response to the Master's invitaion, "It is enough, come up higher," her spirit took its flight. The remains were conveyed to the family home in Groton township Sabbath afternoon, where the funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 6, at one o'clock, interment in the Graves cemetery.

"We shall meet beyond the river,
By and by.
And the Darkness shall be over,
By and by.
With the tiresome journey done,
And the glorious battle won,
We shall shine forth as the sun,
By and by.
There our tears shall all cease flowing,
By and by.
And the sweetest rapture knowing,
By and by
All the best ones who have gone
To the land where strife is done,
We, with gladness, shall rejoin,
By and by."

3 BURN TO DEATH IN LOWELL HOME

ASHES OF MAN, WIFE, BABY FOUND IN RUINS WHEN OIL KINDLED STOVE EXPLODES

Morris Gittinger Family Destroyed by Flames Early Today; Uncle Who Leaped From Upper Window Seriously Burned In Rescue Efforts.

Trapped by flames, member of a family of three lost their lives and a relative was seriously injured this morning when fire destroyed their home at Lowell, nine miles east of here. Morris Gittinger, 28, his wife, Mary, 24 and their four months' old son, Richard, were burned to death. Hal Neeley, 40, uncle of Gittinger, who lived with them, is in Mercy hospital suffering from extensive burns.
Gittinger was sprayed with flaming oil and died in the kitchen of his home after kerosene exploded as he was attempting to kindle a fire in a stove. His wife and baby smothered by flames and smoke died in an adjoining room. Neeley, awakened by smoke and flames, leaped through a window in the upper half-story of the little dwelling. Bleeding from cuts and suffering from burns he joined a group of neighbors in futile attempt to save the others.

Bones in Basement

Remnants of blackened bone smoldering in the basement of the home told the story of the tragedy. Hundreds watched the fire burn itself out before the charred bones could be removed. Coroner P.T.Perin, following an investigation this morning, reconstructed incidents preceding the fire. Gittinger left the room where he slept with his wife and child and went to the adjoining kitchen to start the fire.
Apparently there were smoldering embers in the stove and when Gittinger poured oil on the kindling there was a blast, according to the coroner. The oil can was still on top of the stove after the home had been reduced to ashes.

Trapped Near Stove

A few feet from the stove in ruins of the basement lay the blackened skull. The heat had reduced the remainder of his body to whitened ashes. He fell before he could cross the room Coroner Perin said.
In the basement of the adjoining room, tangled under the springs of the baby's cot, lay the charred remnants of the bodies of the mother and son. She had fallen at the side of the cot, the coroner said.
William L. Gittinger, father of Morris, who lives across the Portland road, state route 101, and neighbors, told harrowing stories of the fire. Awakened by screams, they rushed to the Gittinger home to find it filled with flames and smoke.

Rescue Impossible

Gilbert Gittinger, brother of Morris, broke a window and tried to enter. He was driven out by the flames, suffering burns about the head and arms.
Neighbors demolished other windows but were driven out by the fire which roared through the entire interior of the story and a half house. They said they saw bodies of Mrs. Gittinger and her son on the floor near the cot but could not reach them.
Neeley was awakened by smoke. Flames were roaring through the house, enveloping his bed. He leaped through a window. A few minutes later the roof crashed. Clarence Heckman, a neighbor, rushed Neeley to Mercy hospital where he was given medical attention.

Firemen Summoned

Father and brothers of Morris Gittinger, driven away from the house by the heat, were forced to watch as the place was reduced to ashes. The Green Springs fire department was called but could do little because of the headway of the fire and a shortage of water.
The fire spread to a small barn east of the house and to a garage at the rear, destroying both. Only the smoldering ashes remained three hours later.
Green Springs firemen and neighbors pulled the hot metal roofing from the ruins, disclosing ember-filled basement. In one corner beneath the first floor sleeping room stood the metal frame of the Gittinger's bed. Across the room lay springs of the baby's cot.
The kitchen range remained on the first floor level. The top had fallen, wedging an oilcan against the partially opened lids.
Gittinger was a son of Mr. And Mrs. Warren L. Gittinger, living a few hundred yards east on the opposite side of the road. He was married June 24, 1929, to Miss Mary Shiley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rollo Shiley of Harley street, this city. Their son was born last October.

Parents Survive

Surviving Gittinger are his parents, and four brothers, Dwight, Clyde, Gilbert and Glenn, all at home. Surviving Mrs. Gittinger are her parents, two brothers, Earl, at home, and Leon, of Green Springs and seven sisters, Mrs. Fred Selvey, Green Springs; Mrs. Frank Carter, Mrs. Charles Everhart, and Mrs. Bernard Myers, Tiffin, and Mildred, Helen and Rosa, at home. br Coroner Perin awaited cooling of the ruins of the home before ordering removal of the remnants of the three bodies this afternoon to the Myers funeral home. Funeral arrangements had not been completed this afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Warren L. Gittinger are tenants on a farm owned of Dr. W. A. Holtz of this city. His son had recently been employed in highway work.

Tiffin Daily Tribune, Friday, May 1, 1931

MAN IS FOUND DEAD IN COUNTRY HOME

Death of George Green, 75, Attributed by Coroner to Natural Causes
The body of George Green, 75, farm worker, was found this afternoon in his home on the Negrotown road, two miles south of Tiffin. Sheriff George A Burkett, Deputy Sheriff Harvey J. Ash and Coroner P. T. Perin went to the place where Green lived alone to make an investigation. Death is believed to have been due to natural causes. Green had been suffering from an attack of the grip for several days and had long been afflicted with heart disease. His body was found in bed in his home by C. C. Martin, a neighbor, who made an investigation when he could not find Green about the place as usual. It is believed that he died during the night. Green was missed when members of the Martin family noticed that his dog, penned up each night, had not been released this morning. The aged man had not been seen by his neighbors Thursday but it is believed that he was about as usual then as his dog had been at liberty during the day. Green had lived in his Negrotown home for seven years, working as a day laborer for farmers. Prior to that he had lived in several localities in the county. He is said to have a nephew living in this city.

William J. Kaull

Tiffin Daily Tribune
May 16, 1891 - Page 4, Column 5

William J. Kaull was born Dec. 4, 1805 in Lehigh County, PA., and died May 11, 1891, at 11 o'clock p.m., aged 85 years, 5 months and 7 days. His father, John Kaull, was a native of Bingen, on the Rhine, and immigrated to America at the early age of 6 years.
The subject of this sketch was joined in wedlock in 1826 to Lydia Moser. To this union were born twelve children, eleven of whom grew to adult age. Six of the family, Catherine Reemo, Sarah Wenner, Malinda Jacoby, David M., Lewis M. and John M. Kaull preceded the father to the eternal home. The home circle was first broken in 1855 by the death of the mother. In 1857 the father was joined in matrimony to Mary Strock, and to this union three children were born, Jennie, Jessie and Otilia, all still living. The deceased is the father of a numerous family - forty-three grand-children and twenty-two great grand-children were given him as a heritage.
Early in his married life, he was converted to God and for nearly a half century has been humbly and constantly following the Master. He united in earlier life with the German Reformed church but later transferred to the Methodist Protestant church, under the pastorate of the saintly Robert Andrews. Father Kaull's greatest delight in life was to do the Master's will and but a few days ago, with eyes lifted heavenward, he said to the writer: "I, like Zaccheus who climbed into the tree top, am so anxious to see Jesus. I long to go and be with him." Father Kaull has been through a long life an example of moderation - temperate in words, in all his walk, exemplary in all his business life, a most kind and tender parent, a devoted companion, a true and kindly neighbor.
For several years he has been threatened with a cancer in the fall past it first manifested itself in a serious manner. During the intervening months he has been a great sufferer, but through it all he has been patient and cheerful, thinking of the welfare of others rather than exacting attention. His greatest anxiety in his last hours was to feel assured that the survivors all might be at peace and in love with God and one with another. "Blessed are the peace-makers for they shall be called the children of God," was truly said of him.
The family alter was erected and maintained through a long life and God's word was daily read, the songs of Zion sung and the voice of father pleading at a throne of grace in behalf of the family, the neighbors and the nation. His prominent traits of character were modesty, humility and integrity, and unflinching devotion to the right. Many persons in the community where his active life was spent ascribe their conversion to his holy life and his kind ministrations as a neighbor.

Emanuel Kirby

Murder and Suicide -- Former Wyandot County Man Kills Wife and Self

The Deed of Emanuel Kirby Who Conducted a Hotel at Dodge City, Kansas, and Who Was Also a Heavy Land Owner - Failure of Crops and a Sun Stroke Believed to Have Unbalanced His Mind.

Isaiah Kirby, residing a mile east of Sycamore, was in Upper Sandusky Monday night and left for Dodge City, Kansas, on the midnight passenger. Monday afternoon he received a telegram from that place, which conveyed the startling intelligence that his brother, Emanuel, a former resident of thie county, had shot and killed his wife and then turned the weapon on himself, with fatal results.

The following special, under date of Monday, from Dodge City, appeared in the daily papers Tuesday:
"E. Kirby, proprietor of the Park hotel, today shot and killed his wife and then shot himself, both dying instantly. The cause assigned is a disagreement over property." The dead man will be remembered by many residents of this city and vicinity, having live for many years on what is now the Jeff Gamel farm, north of town, on the Carey road. He was a son of Moses Kirby, who for years was a familiar figure at the annual county fairs, holding the position of marshal of the day. The family left Wyandot county about fifteen years ago and had since resided in Kansas. Emanuel Kirby was twice married, but it is understood there were no children by the second marriage. The first wife died, leaving one child, a son, who is now a young man. The Kirbys also at one time lived in Tymochtee township. A telephone message from Sycamore says that Kirby was the owner of 5,000 acres of land near Dodge City. The recent hot spell and drought had spoiled his crops and killed nearly all of his stock. Kirby had suffered a sun stroke a short time ago, and this together with his losses it is believed deranged his mind and caused him to commit the rash act. The son has been attending college at St. Joseph, Mo.

October 14, 1862, he was promoted to the rank of major and his next promotion came in two months when he was raised to the rank of colonel. January 12, 1865 he was promoted to brigadier general although he had been placed in command of a brigade June 10, 1864. He mustered out of the service on June 12, 1865. Shortly after the close of the war he engaged in the hardware business in Upper Sandusky, the firm being known as Hale & Kirby.
General Kirby was census director in this district at one time. He was also connected with the appraisement of land in Oklahoma several years ago. He was a member of Robbins Post, G.A.R. at Upper Sandusky. He is survived by his widow and one son, Thomas, an attorney in Cleveland, and two daughters.
Services will be held Saturday afternoon at his late home at 1 o'clock and the burial will be under the auspices of Robbins Post G.A.R. C.M. Funk, of Bascom, a life long friend and comrade, and wife will be among those who will attend the funeral.
