Peter Dewald, whose funeral
occurred Sunday, was born in Locher, Bavaria, Germany in the month of
February, 1825. In 1833, a lad of eight years, he came to America with
his parents, and in May of the same year the family reached Tiffin, at
that time a mere hamlet. In 1858, he entered the holy bonds of
matrimony with Miss Barbara Smith, who was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and
was the daughter of Jacob Smith. This union was blessed with ten
children, three sons and seven daughters, all of whom, with one
exception, are residents of Seneca County. Mr. Dewald was one of the
pioneers of Seneca County. On June 6, 1866, forty years ago, he moved
to the farm on which his earthly career came to a close. The farm is
located in Louden township and he himself cleared it for agricultural
purposes. When he took possession there was one small open space on the
place, just large enough for a log cabin. Of a family of 4 brothers and
6 sisters, Philip Dewald, who lives in Bascom, is the only surviving
member. In recent years Mr. Dewald was a member of the Zion’s Reformed
church, in Bascom, Ohio, and faithfully supported the interests of the
congregation. After an illness of about one week, he passed away
suddenly, while sitting in his chair, on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 11,

church, at Bascom, Sunday morning, Oct. 14, 1906, in the presence of a
large concourse of neighbors and friends, the pastor of the church, Dr.
JH.B. Rust, officiating. The day was rarely beautiful, and thus the
sunlight at noon cast a halo of glory upon the scene of burial in the
village cemetery.

"Ora J. Feighner, baggagemaster at the B. & O., received a telegram, Sunday afternoon, informing him that his son, George, had been killed at Holden, W. Va. in a mine. The particulars of the accident were very meagre, but it is thought that he was killed by a live wire. He had been at Holden for about six weeks going there from Columbus. He worked at Grammes' and Fingerhuth's bakeries here, and also was a driver for the U. S. Mail Wagon for some time. He was about 21years old, and leaves a father, grandmother and wife, of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Albert Green, of Trumbell county. The remains will be brought here for burial. "The funeral of George Feighner who was killed in a mine, at Holden, W. Va., Sunday, was held this afternoon, at the home of his father, O. J. Feighner, Rev. C. S. Johnson officiating. Tuesday, Mr. Feighner received a letter from the foreman of the U. S. Coal and Oil Co., in whose employ Mr. Feighner was at the time of his death, stating the facts of the sad accident. He was employed there as an electrician. It was necessary to go to a part of the mine and he jumped on one of the coal cars used in the mine. There were several cars in the string, and he fell between two of them. The cars passed over him killing him instantly. His neck was broken, his chest was crushed and his left arm broken. The story that he met foul play is pronounced as absurd as he was well liked there, and never had any trouble with anyone."
