James H. McDaniel

Seneca Advertiser (Tiffin, Ohio) dated June 8, 1897

"DEATH OF OLD RESIDENTS"

"    'Lecturing Jimmie' McDaniel and Bernard Kleinfelter Lay Down Life's Burdens" James H. McDaniels, died at his late home, 125 Douglas street, at 11 o'clock Saturday night aged seventy-five years, ten months and 20 days. He was only ill a few hours and death resulted from appoplexy. The funeral takes place from the house at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Interment will be made in Stoner's cemetery.
The deceased was born in Richland county, Pa., July 15, 1821. When a young man he came to Seneca county, where he married and the union was blessed with three children, but mother and the children died within a short time. In December, 1853, he was again married to Miss Caroline Jones, and to them were born six children, five of whom with their mother survive. "Lecturing Jimmie" as the deceased was familiarly called, was a man of many noble traits of character. Twelve years ago, during the Murphy movement in this city, he signed the pledge and remained ever true to the good resolution he made. Since that time, when his health permitted, he was almost a daily visitor to the various offices in the Court house and he never tired of telling his drunken experiences before he signed the pledge. He seemed to delight in his success in conquering "his old enemy" as he would refer to his battle with King Alcohol. His reference to the old life he lead always embodied kindly admonitions and pity for those who are victims of drink and he would always close a "temperence lecture" with these words: "I pity the man, who is a victim of drink, from the bottom of my heart and would advise this cure: When the temptation to drink takes possession of you say: 'God, help me to resist;' then go to the nearest pump or faucet and take a drink of water.'"

EFFIE McDONALD

AGE 8
DAUGHTER OF JOHN M.& EMMA (VANNATTER) McDONALD
Sept. 4, 1858 - July 15, 1866

An accident occurred near Old Fort Seneca in this county, on Sunday, July 15th, the particulars of which is as follows: Several little girls, whose ages ranged from eight to fourteen years, were bathing in the Sandusky River, when Effie McDonald, aged eight, accidentally got in beyond her depth and was drowned. As soon as the other girls became aware that she was drowning they screamed for help, and their cries attracted the attention of the unfortunate girls brother Wilson, aged ten years, who arrived just as she was sinking for the last time. He plunged into the river, and did all in his power to save this little sister. The conduct of the little fellow was indeed heroic, as he came near loosing his own life in trying to save his sister. But his efforts were in vain and he came to the shore and gave the alarm. The body was recovered about half and hour after she was drowned.
Effie McDonald was a very bright and intelligent child, the only daughter of John M. and Emma McDonald. Her loss is deeply felt in the family and the parents have the sympathy of the whole community.

Daniel Neikirk

Tiffin Daily Tribune & Herald
1 September 1890

Neikirk--At his home, in Scipio township, Sunday, Aug. 31, 1890, Daniel Neikirk, aged about 90 years. The funeral takes place on Tuesday.  He was one of the early pioneers of Seneca county, and one of the last of the sturdy race of men who braved the terrors of the then Western forests, full of wild beasts, and still inhabited by the bands of Seneca Indians, of three-quarters of a century ago. "Uncle Dan," as he was familiarly known by all, was born in the State of Maryland, a short distance from the Pennsylvania State line, December, 1800, and was consequently in his ninetieth year at his death.
He was the last of a family of eleven children, ten sons and one daughter.
He was of Dutch ancestry, the Neikirks having fought under the famous William of Orange in the memorable "Revolt of the Netherlands" against the infamous Philip II of Spain.
His grandfather emigrated to American in the fore part of the last century and his sons acted "well their part" in the stirring times incident upon the Revolution.
Some of the family served during the War of 1812.
His father, Michael Neikirk, came to the wilds of Seneca county with his family during the "twenties" and settled near the old "Indian Trail"," leading from Upper Sandusky to Sandusky City, now the Kilbourn road. Daniel took an active part in the early affairs of this county.
He married at the age of thirty.
His widow and (we belive) all his children, of whom there are a large number, survive him.
During his life he was a devoted Christian and a member of the English Lutheran church and although for years he has been unable to attend church, his chief delight was to talk on Scripture themes and about the life that was to come.

Again the death-angel has entered our midst and taken one full of years and good works. Rachel Amanda Platte was born in Ulysses, Tompkins county, New York. February 09, 1816, and departed this life at the home her daughter, Mrs John L Cole, July 15, 1903, aged 87 years, five months, and six days. She moved with her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Norton, to Scipio township in 1833, coming by way of Lake Erie, the journey lasting two weeks. On June 4, 1834, she was married to Joel W Platte, who died six years ago, at the ripe old age of 84. Moving to Republic in 1841, the family occupied the third building erected in the village, and the house later was added to and became the family home. Mrs Platte received her mail at the postoffice at Republic for more than 70 years. She joined the Baptist church in 1838, being the first member received by baptism after its organization. "Malice toward none and charity for all," was practiced through her long and useful life. He home was open to the friendless and all who came received a cordial welcome. She gave freely of her means and died rich in good deeds and the love and veneration of all who knew her. Too much can not be said in praise of this good woman. Having received a fine education before coming to Ohio, she kept herself so well informed on educational affairs and current events that she was considered authority even in her old age. Previous to her death the family was represented by five generations ; four children, Mesdames C A Way and John L Cole, of Republic ; Joe N, of Sheridan, Wy, and J Stiles, of Tiffin; fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and three great great grand children. Funeral services were conducted by Rev Bebb, at the Baptist church. Each generation in the village has representatives that were once members of her Sunday school class. Covered with flowers she had so dearly loved through life, she was laid to rest in Farewell Retreat cemetery.
