GEORGE MADER

Suicide -- On Wednesday of last week, April 27th George Frederick Mader of this city [Circleville, Pickaway Co], committed suicide by shooting himself. He left town that morning, and went to the residence of Adam Wagerly, in the northeast part of Circleville township, where he borrowed a shot-gun to kill some game. He started for the woods and the report of the gun was heard twice, but that was the last of him. On Saturday afternoon, a son of Mr. Wagerly came to town in search of Mader and the gun when he learned that Mader had not been home since Wednesday. Suspicions were aroused, and young Wagerly went home at once, and in the woods about thirty yards from the barn, found the body of Mader lying beside a log, on one end of which was his ammunition. From the position of the body, he must have laid down on his back, used the ramrod to fire the gun, raising his head and receiving the charge in his forehead, making a large hold and tearing away part of his head. The gun was heavily loaded with buckshot. When discovered his hands still clenched the weapon. The body was brought to this city, Saturday evening, and Jason Case, Coroner, held an inquest, the jury rendering a verdict that the deceased came to his death by a gunshot wound inflicted by himself, while in a state of insanity. The deceased had been subject to mental aberration for considerable length of time, and frequently threatened self-destruction. He was a son of Jacob Mader, Senior, and 28 years of age, was a baker by trade, and formerly kept the Montana Grocery, capitulating to the Crusaders last Spring. He had a wife and child, but his wife had not been living with him lately. His funeral took place Sunday afternoon, from his father's residence.

JOHN MADER

JOHN G. MADER DIES VERY SUDDENLY - John G. Mader, a resident of Marion, Ohio, but a former Chillicothe boy, having been born and raised here, died suddently at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Barbara Hageman at a quarter to one this morning of apoplexy. Mr. Mader had just arrived in this city for a visit, having come down on the past-nine traction car. He had gone to his sisters home, knocked on the door, as they did not expect him. After entering the home, his sister started to talk, but he stated he was tired and was going to bed. His nephew, with whom he slept asked who was there and was told, Uncle John. He tried to wake him to speak to him, but was unable to do so. His uncle was breathing very hard, and he called his mother. She saw at once something wrong and summoned Doctors Marr and Meggenhofen. He rallied for a short time in response to their treatment, but sank again into a comatose condition, from which he never rallied. John Mader was born in this city, April 12,1862. He grew up to young manhood and was educated here. Some twenty-five years ago he went to Marion, where he has since resided. He was twice elected major of Marion, having just completed his last term, December 31st. Since that time he has been running a barber shop in that city. Mr. Mader was here at Easter time upon a short visit and complained then of not feeling well, but seemingly recovered. His death came as quite a shock to all the family. He is survived by four brothers and three sisters, William of Cincinnati, Jacob of Bucyrus, Fred and Charles of this city, Mrs. Barbara Hageman and Miss LuLu Mader of Columbus. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
[NB: I believe the note about 3 sisters to be a misprint, as we only knew him to have 2 sisters. -SH]

The unexpected death of ex-Mayor John G. Mader, comes as a distinct shock to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in this and surrounding cities and towns. There are pinnacles of fame to which John, as he was almost universally known, never attained, but in the matter of making and attaining friendships he was far from the ordinary. He was a true friend in storm and calm, ever steadfast, and hence it is easy to understand how the friendships made by him were retained. His death will be sincerely mourned.

MADGE MADER

Dreamless Sleep Comes Suddenly to Mrs. J. Geo Mader after Brief Illness.

This community was shocked Monday morning when the news became known that Mrs. J. G. Mader had passed away Sunday night at her home on E. Mansfield St. Inquiry proved that it was only to true. Her passing was very sudden. She ate dinner Sunday at the usual time and appeared to be in the best of health up to 2:00 o'clock she was cheerful and apparently well, but at that hour she suffered a stroke of paralysis and lapsed into unconsciousness from which she never rallied. She lingered until 11 o'clock in the evening, when she passed quietly and without a struggle into that undisturbed repose from which there is no waking to mortality.

Funeral services will be held from the residence on E. Mansfield St. at 10 o'clock Tuesday forenoon, conducted by Rev. W. F. Helle of Fostoria, who is supplying the place of Rev. J. W. Kuntz with the German Lutheran Church of Good Hope during the pastors absence on his European tour. The funeral cortege will leave the house about 1:15 p.m. for the short line depot, and will be taken on the 1:45 p.m. train to Circleville. Services will be held in that city at her mother's home on Wednesday morning followed by interment at Forest Cemetery.

Madge Mader was the daughter of Jacob and Magdalena Mader, and was born in Circleville on July 27, 1858, her age at death being 48 years, 10 months, and 5 days. She grew to womanhood there and made her home there until her marriage. By travel and study she acquired culture in a high degree, and was fitted for any position in society. She was united in marriage June 9, 1903, to J. Geo. Mader of this city, and has since made her home in Bucyrus.

Here she immediately took a recognized place in society, her amiable qualities and true refinement winning friends whenever she became known. Brief as was her residence in this city, she became widely acquainted and was esteemed Christian lady, family member, and member of the German Lutheran Church. She was baptized at infancy and confirmed at a proper age as a communicant member, remaining active in every good word and work until her death. Her kindly heart and pleasant disposition added to the warm affection felt for her by those about her. always cheerful and jovial, she was a true helpmate and wife. She was apparently strong and hearty and returned only a couple of days before the fatal stroke from a four week's tour of California taken in company with her husband. She appeared well and hearty and seemed to have derived much benefit from the trip.

Besides her husband and his family, she leaves her mother, 4 brothers and 2 sisters to mourn her death. With them a wide circle of friends join their tears for one they esteemed and loved.

By her sudden death they are again reminded of the uncertainty of life and the sure coming of the grim reaper, whose shadowy presence is so often unsuspected until the mists of the dark valley have closed about the form of our loved ones and they are hidden forever from our view. But beyond the shadows there is light and for the silent traveler of the lonely pathway the eternal day has dawned. There is no death, "The boundless universe is life."

WILLIAM MADER

Mr. William H[einrich]. Mader, one of Chillicothe's old and well known citizens, died on Wednesday night last of a blood tumor on the neck. The tumor made its appearance about six months ago and stubbornly refused to yield to treatment. During the past two weeks he was confined to his bed and death was expected at most any time. The deceased was born in Wuttenberg, Germany, sixty-five years ago and came to this city in 1850 when a young man of 20. With his brother he engaged in the grocery business near where Vaughter& Kramer's store now stands. In 1852 they were burned out in the big fire, which took everything they had. Later on he again engaged in the same business on West Water Street, where he continued until his retirement about 10 years ago. He leaves a family of seven children, Mrs. Gregory Hagemann, Miss Lulu Mader, Chas. F. and Frederick, of this city, William of Nashville, Tenn., and Jacob F., of Bucyrus, Ohio, all of whom are here for the funeral. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 8:30 and will be in charge of the Masons and Red Men. Rev. Otto Schettler will officiate. All friends of the family are invited.
