MAHLON HATCHER

FORMER MAYOR DIES
M. J. Hatcher a Leader in Public Affairs. Passed to the great beyond.

On Tuesday evening about five o'clock Mr. M[ahlon]. J. Hatcher one of the leaders in public affairs of Kingston, died after a lingering illness of almost two years. He was afflicted with pernicious anaemia, for which malady he had tried every remedy which science has to offer, but all to no avail. About a year ago he went to Hamilton's hospital in Columbus for treatment and later in the year went to Ashville NC, where he remained until last spring, coming back apparently benefitted, but the improvement was not permanent, and death finally conquered.

Mr. Hatcher was mayor of Kinston three times, and on the village school board of many years and filled other important public offices. In the discarge of these public duties he was always faithful and conscientious.

The funeral services occured Thrusday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the service being conducted by Rev. Edwin Sherwood, assisted by Rev. Wm. Resse. Mr. Hatcher was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Circleville and many members of the Kingston and Circleville lodges attended the funeral. The remains were laid away in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

IN MEMORIAM

Mahlon J. Hatcher was born near Logan, Hocking Co. Ohio, the 22nd day of September, 1843. In early manhood he moved with his young wife to Kingston, where for 36 years they walked together, laboring and sacrificing, building up a lucrative business and a comfortable home. Mr. Hatcher was a public spirited man and a valuable member of the community, occupying many positions of trust. He was three time elected mayor of the town and was one of the most conscientious, fearless and just executives. He was of a genial disposition, oblighing in business a kind neighbor and most of all a Christian Gentlman.

He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1867, under the pastorage of the Rev. A. C. Kelly.

Though for upwards of two years shut in from active life, he yet bore his long and tryng illness with Christian heroism. Finnaly on the afternoon of August 19, 1902, at the age of 58 years, 10 months and 27 days, surrounded by his family, he quietly and peacefully closed his eyes upon this world.

His devoted wife [Hannah Lovella Plumer], who nursed him so long, survivies to mourn his loss as also his sons, Chas. W. Hatcher, the present mayor of Kingston, Mr. Elmer Hatcher of Columbus, Mr. E[dwin]. W. Hatcher of this place and Mr. Albert S. Hatcher, who gave up his graduating year at college to assist in nursing his father; also his mother [Jane Barnhart], 93 years of age, and two brothers and a half brother and one sister. His youngest son, Clyde, preceded him to the better land.

In his death our town has lost a useful and honored citizen, the church a valued member of it's communion and of its offical board, his family a faithful husband and father, and many others a warm personal friend. But unless our faith is vain, his death is swallowed up in victory, and he has gained heaven and eternal life.

[NB: Mahlon J. Hatcher was elected Mayor of Kingston in 1879. His business was a blacksmith shop. He bought the business from George Swyers, and Mr. George Rogers helped him run the shop.]
