JOHN GARTNER

An unusually sad death was that of Mr. John Gartner, an engineer on the B. and O.S.W., which occurred at his residence on Hirm Street on last Saturday morning. Over a year ago the deceased contracted a severe cold which lingered despite his efforts to cure it; but he refused to leave his post until last June, when the cold had developed in consumption and he was no longer able to perform his duties. From that time he grew worse gradually until his death. The deceased was a son of Adam Gartner, of Hopetown. He first learned the blacksmith trade with his father, but his being distasteful to him he came to this city and entered the employ of the B. and O.S.W. as a fireman, with the expectation of making an engineer of himself, which position he attained but a few months before his sickness. He leaves a wife, formerly Miss Mame A. Brant, whom he married seventeen years ago, but no children. He was a brother of Mrs. C. F. Mader and Mrs. Frank Perry and Charles Gartner, of this city, Misses Ida and Kate and Mr. Lewis Gartner of Hopetown and Mr. George Gartner, of South Charleston. He was a member of the B. of L. F. and was insured in that Order for $1,500. The funeral took place from his late residence on Monday afternoon and was in charge of the B. of L. F. Rev. M. K. Pasco officiating.
