Joshua W. Sill (1831-1862), was killed at the Battle of
Stone's River outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. a native of Chillicothe.
Sill excelled at West Point where he graduated third in his class. He remained
in the army until 1861, where he spent most of his time teaching at West
Point. He resigned in 1861 and accepted a position teaching mathematics at the
Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, New York. Sill resigned this
position at the outbreak of the Civil War and returned to Ohio where he was
commissioned as a lieutenant colonel. He served as aide to General George B.
McClellan. Early in the war, Sill fought in minor battles in Kentucky and
Alabama. In July 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general and was later
given command of a brigade in General Phil Sheridan's army. He was killed by
rifle fire while leading his men into battle on December 31, 1862.
On February 1, 1863 a large funeral was held for Sill
at the Presbyterian Church. Sill's body had been buried in a battlefield
cemetery, but it was later returned to Chillicothe for burial in Grandview
Cemetery. Rev. J. B. Britton officiated. The mayor, city council, and
representatives of the town's fraternal societies participated.
